thotsBgone··on EU Draft Council Declaration Against Encryption [pdf]
You misunderstood. They said the current link is possibly obscurantist, not the German one.
thotsBgone··on Stopping some fishing would increase overall catches
The US does not have concentration camps full of religious minorities. The US media is only lightly censored, as opposed to the fully censored Chinese media. The US has not implemented a social credit system to turn its own population into a secret police. The US doesn't cover up global pandemics and then "disappear" anyone who talks about the cover up. The US is not the worlds biggest jailer of journalists. The US is not a one-party system which has outlawed protests etc. The US does not execute mass-scale non-consensual organ-harvesting of religious minorities to fuel their organ tourism industry. You should be thankful that speaking against the US government won't get you kidnapped and tortured like it would in China. If this was China, your very comment could lead to your death.

Surely, for a business, things like advertisement, tracking, etc. may also be essential.
thotsBgone··on Finally, a Problem That Only Quantum Computers Will Ever Be Able to Solve (2018)
Your definition of "relevance" seems to be that which advances the arrival of practical quantum computers. Why can't something be interesting in its own right?
thotsBgone··on Programs are a prison: Rethinking the building blocks of computing interfaces
RSS feeds are common, but most readers are mediocre. I'm stuck between some proprietary "pay to remove ads and subscribe for premium" crap, an emacs mode that randomly sometimes takes up to an hour to open, and Thunderbird, which recently deleted all of my RSS feeds.
thotsBgone··on The Joys of Being a Stoic
Typical mind fallacy: thinking what is obvious to you is obvious to everyone.
thotsBgone··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
I can absolutely guarantee that when I was severely depressed, an all expenses paid weeklong camping trip would have:

- Not been enjoyable, as I was much less capable of feeling pleasure/joy

- Been way to difficult for me to accomplish, given that getting out of bed and showering was often too difficult for me to accomplish

- Would have had a negative effect on my depression

thotsBgone··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
Note that depression is a highly variable disorder, and not every depressed person is in any kind of "vicious self-destructive circle".
thotsBgone··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
As someone with experience with both therapy and psilocybin (while severely depressed), I would guess the psilocybin is the main ingredient in this concoction, and the therapy is just being added to make the study more palatable, the same way medical cannabis use had to precede recreational cannabis use.

For me, emacs is also 2 keystrokes away and starts instantly (as long as the daemon is already running). Doom emacs has sane (good!) defaults.

My main valid gripe with emacs is the slow rendering engine.

thotsBgone··on A tech antitrust problem no one is talking about: US broadband providers
It wasn't in taxes or tax breaks, but the ISPs were given exemption to regulation on prices in exchange for deploying a fiber network they never deployed. This basically happened twice, which is why I talk about 400 billion when the link you gave only talks about the first 200.

https://www.natoa.org/events/BrokenPromisesGarcia.pdf

BTW the logic in your link doesn't make sense. The $200 billion number is "based on taking what ISP profits would have been had they been regulated as a utility", yes, but the only reason we didn't regulate them as a utility is they promised us the fiber networks!

thotsBgone··on A tech antitrust problem no one is talking about: US broadband providers
Most people aren't aware... why?

I'd guess because the media is controlled by some of the same people who want us to remain unaware. They block information from reaching the media, and flood media with sensationalist stories to prevent attention from settling on issues that matter.

thotsBgone··on A tech antitrust problem no one is talking about: US broadband providers
This is the result of government corruption. For example: the government paid ISPs $400 billion dollars (!) to create a nationwide fiber network, and the ISPs pocketed the money and didn't do it. No investigation into what happened or anything. The money is just gone. Clearly corruption is the only explanation. Politicians have been bought.

Why voters don't know/care is another issue, but it might have something to do with the fact that the news media has also been bought.

thotsBgone··on Scientists discover how a common mutation leads to ‘night owl’ sleep disorder
A reminder that we did not evolve "up North".

Also, we can barely see at night, and that's probably why we sleep when we do, for as long as we do. To keep us safe.

The introduction of the Fraktur font introduces different meaning. 'R' in Fraktur would mean something different than R in another font in the same text.
thotsBgone··on Web based Windows XP desktop recreation, built with React
Yeah, Bill Gates should stop saving thousands of lives and instead fix a few bugs in Windows 10.
thotsBgone··on Scientists discover how a common mutation leads to ‘night owl’ sleep disorder
> I'm sort of joking, but not quite. I can't think of an objective reason why being a 'night owl' is biologically an abnormality/deficiency.

It leads to being awake during dark hours, and humans do not have night vision.

Also Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder, while less common, is also a thing and also leads to being awake during dark hours.

thotsBgone··on Taleb is wrong about IQ (2019)
Denial of the validity of IQ is one of the main factors that justifies the biggest form of discrimination in existence: discrimination based on intelligence. I was born wealthy, and some people are born homeless, purely based on IQ. This is patently unfair, but you can't address that if IQ isn't real. I think people deny the validity of IQ because they are afraid if IQ is real then our society is structured in a way that is very unfair to people with low IQ.
thotsBgone··on Taleb is wrong about IQ (2019)
IQ, however, is the most robust psychometric.
thotsBgone··on Ask HN: Why isn’t finance a part of the core curriculum at schools?
In my school (Canada), the math classes for the smart kids have stuff like matrix multiplication, and for the less ambitious kids there are units on finance.
thotsBgone··on Ask HN: Why isn’t finance a part of the core curriculum at schools?
> What are you going to get rid of to open up some time in the kids schedule to teach finance?

Half of the English curriculum now is literary analysis. Split English into a grammar class and a literary analysis class, and let students take finance (or computer science or psychology or ...) instead of literary analysis.

I also don't see why foreign languages or art would be particularly more important than finance.

thotsBgone··on I am an Uighur who faced China’s concentration camps
Criticizing the Chinese government is racist, don't you know that?
thotsBgone··on Spaced Repetition (2019)
Personally, I only understood logarithms after memorizing the log laws using spaced repetition. I had been taught logarithms before descriptively, but only once the equations were in my head could my brain make sense of how they work.

thotsBgone··on Building a computer in Conway's game of life
Given the fact that we can build a computer in the game of life, this breaks down to a simpler question: can we have intelligence in a computer? If so, it can also occur in the game of life.
