thorn··on Mathematics for the Adventurous Self-Learner
I am always astonished to learn that there are such self-learners in the world. I wonder how it is even possible to have a family and spend whole day building a startup - I cannot imagine that startup work is less than 8 hours a day - and then at evening they learn math or other complicated branch of science. What time and more especially how much energy they have for the family? Are these guys superhumans? I never was able to achieve such level of daily energy spent without trapping in burn out. I am not critiquing or being jealous here, just having genuine interest. How is it possible to be sustainable across so many years?
thorn··on In a swipe at Chrome, Firefox now blocks ad trackers by default
I would love to if FF could handle Amazon.com without boiling my MBP2013. Is it a bug in FF or just Amazon did not care to optimize their shit?

Is there a way to figure out the performance's origin in FF somehow?

thorn··on The Startup Party Is Over
Why did it suddenly disappear from HN? I could not see it in first 3 pages. It just was on 23th place of HN front-page.
thorn··on How to Be Successful
Oh really. This article has click baity title. All these motivational posts get repetitive. They have very little actionable content in them. Rather than reading advices from the privileged ivory tower of survivors, I better go and read "The dispossessed" by Ursula Le Guin.
thorn··on A Message to Our Customers
I wonder what will be response of other manufacturers making phones with Android.
thorn··on The Useless Agony of Going Offline
I think this guy completely missed the point. He mixes distractions from real research work. "Being informed" is a vague phrase. Sometimes information consumption is like eating junk food - it can be too much. In case of author, it feels like a solid case. Unless he uses social networks for real work - I cannot see how reading Facebook can be productive or relevant to work.

In the end, this article felt like self defence, or even more like rationalization on the topic. But I must admit that it forced me to think about this topic a little.

thorn··on Problems with Go's design
I think author of this article is strangely biased towards dynamic languages. Go is not about shortest programs in the worlds, yes sometimes code is longer than in python. But in Go I can manage code execution and predict memory easier better than in Python or other dynamic languages. Many things in Go were done on purpose. Learn to use Go and it's awesome tools, like gofmt, goimports and others.
thorn··on OS X 10.11 El Capitan: Review
That is the feature of Maverick too, that on 5% of battery, CPU goes into throttle mode.
thorn··on Armok Vision – A Dwarf Fortress Unity3D frontend
Awesome job. Sometimes I think why am I not doing something like too. I am fan of DF and always wondered if there would be some visual 3d interface to the game.
thorn··on The Rise and Fall of CORBA (2006)
I still maintain the piece of backend which I wrote 8-10 years ago using Python and omniORB. Performance of CORBA was critical back then. But I have started to use CORBA for parts where performance and network overhead was not that critical, which corrupted my code beyond any limits. I was not very experienced back then. I still struggle and feel pain when I see that old code. Also omniORB has some weird memory leaks related bug, which I could not figure out in many years. Sigh...

Partially I have migrated most of component from CORBA to beanstalkd (MQ server). This is much more simple approach, testing is easier, code flow is simple. I cannot recommend enough this simple and robust MQ server: beanstalkd.

For the part when one component wants to call another component in Python and there is no way I could plug a queue into the flow, I prefer to use Pyro. Dirty and simple.

thorn··on Minecraft creator Notch shares the darker side of life after a big exit
Huh. My sympathies to Notch. And my disrespect to this kind of news.
thorn··on Minecraft creator Notch shares the darker side of life after a big exit
Autistic is not something person can choose really or affect. Please learn the words you use.
thorn··on The Glium Library – Safe OpenGL in Rust
So, Rust is ready for writing high performant games?
thorn··on How I tackled my performance issues developing an Android game in Unity
Please suggest 2d engine as nice as Unity ;-)
thorn··on Wargames
Nice idea and progression of difficulty. I second this as very good and smooth intro.
thorn··on Classic Game Postmortem: Loom [video]
Awesome postmortem for an awesome game. This game has so big place in my memories. For anybody making games, this is worth watching.
thorn··on Show HN: Puzzle game "Nerdy Dwarf" I have just released for free [Unity]
Thanks, dude! Maybe mobile, but I just wanted to see the reaction on desktop and web.

All this game business is new to me. It is my first game and I need to probe the ground a little :-)

thorn··on Show HN: Puzzle game "Nerdy Dwarf" I have just released for free [Unity]
Author here. If you have any comments or questions, I am welcome to answer them.
thorn··on Developing Games in Elm
There is nothing about developing games in this article! I do not understand why they put such title at all.
thorn··on Handmade Hero's new lessons about old-school game programming
It is a good tutorial. But do take it with a pinch of salt, b/c I have already seen some zealots defending this as religion of writing games from scratch as something easy and achievable in short time. It is time consuming and takes lots of practice and tweaking even for seasoned game developer.

And most importantly, if you want to deliver a complete game as single developer/designer, doing it from scratch is probably the wrong path to take. You would have to wear so many other hats besides just game programming.

But if you want to build renderers and learn the craft of rendering stuff in low level. Or you are doing as a hobby without intention to deliver a complete game with rich content, then this tutorial is good for ya!

thorn··on Purging proc from Rust
What about us, simple mortals who want to learn this exciting language, which changes a lot even now? I spent some time writing stuff on Rust. But it is moving target without no documentation for advanced parts. How do I figure out advanced stuff on my own? Is there parts of compiler I can use for reference?

What can I do while they "rush" language to the 1.0 stable release?

I mean how to get the best from this situation if I want to be programming in Rust in future?

thorn··on Compiler Design in C
Care to expose any good book explaining more modern approach for compilers from the practical point of view (including RD)?
thorn··on Microsoft Near Deal to Buy Minecraft Maker Mojang
Sigh. I thought it's bad manner to give links to resource where you cannot read the article without additional actions like sign-up.

Also it's not hacker news. I am sorry. But quality of links being promoted here degraded in quality and keeps going down.

thorn··on Ask HN: RubyMotion or Swift?
What about performance aspect? What kinds of games Unity is suited for? I heard that Unity has some troubles keeping up with smooth 60 fps when the number of objects is quite large. Don't want to sound ignorant. Just wondering.
thorn··on Postfix Code Completion in IntelliJ IDEA 13.1
I totally agree with you. For me more important would be to improve the way how I solve problems, how I think about problems. People tends to pay too much attention to the speed of coding.

I wonder if any tests were made about how much time is spend to actual thinking versus coding the idea? Which area is more worth to work on?

thorn··on Coursera blocks access to students in Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria
This is very sad news. Restricting education access for some people looks like very bad move for whole MOOC community. I wonder what made them to do that? Would Coursera be sanctioned or even close otherwise?

I wonder what is the process how those restriction are being applied to the company and what are the consequences if you not follow this (law)?

thorn··on When Buying Two Computers Is Cheaper Than Buying One
For me the solution to replace TrueCrypt was about finding encFS. Because I use Windows/OSX, I even bought BoxCryptor which is commercial implementation of encFS.
thorn··on HN Help: I'm lost
I feel like I'm stuck at my work after 6 years working there. It was beginning like startup, and then we got bought after 2 years for "nothing", but I got good salary. So I'm kind of addicted to this work b/c of salary mostly. The bad thing that no progress is made for last 2 years and job became completely soul sucking.

I cannot find power in myself to break those chains. How do you trick yourself to get rid of money-addictive soul sucking job?

thorn··on At 38, am I too old for a startup?
i think the age doesn't matter at all. whats matter thats is your resources and health to handle all the stuff.
