thorio··on Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web
I'm totally behind all opposition against this, as I'm massively in line with the sentiment here. However thinking about it more and more, I get the impression that it will be essential to explain the impact of this to normal people (like my mom) and that's, what I just don't succeed in so far.

Without a broad support and public opinion about this, they might shockingly just be able to get this started. Apple and on-device CSAM scanning is something I have in mind about this, as s counter example.

What's a simple narrative non-tech people understand about this? Should I ask ChatGPT?

thorio··on Excess weight, obesity more deadly than previously believed
"Cutting out the daily donut for two weeks is about a pound of fat."

While I'm completely behind your post in general, unfortunately it's much more complicated. It comes down to calories in vs energy consumption. If you oversupply your buddy with calories however most science I read states 7.000 calories of surplus to be one kilo in fat in the average human. Highly recommend the Huberman episode about nutrition.

thorio··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
As advice is always super specific and would require me to learn much more about you, I will just share my story first and say yes it's possible:

- German

- spend youth with coding and drumming mostly

- got a bachelor in jazz drums

- got a bachelor in architecture (and got interested in entrepreneurship)

- failed first startup attempts

- worked in architecture for short time

- switched into a commercial real estate development job at 29

- founded a proptech startup by 31, headed product development and later tech there. It worked but didn't take off enough and will therefore be "sold" for close to nothing

- took a part time job in commercial real estate again with 2-3x last salary at a large cooperation (bureaucratic)

- constantly on the lookout for new business opportunities since then (suggestions welcome). I'm also considering leaving job for something less corporate and more at the crossover between tech and real estate.

It can be a mental struggle to switch back and forth, especially since you don't get to the point of directing all your energy into the "one right thing", most people feel the need for in their thirties. At the same time for me, having a well paid job that isn't fulfilling can glue you in as much as a unemployment, as there is more risk involved. Comparing to others is the underlying poisonous thing here, I guess.

I still idealize running my own business, as I tasted that juice and loved it, but getting more risk averse with upcoming recession too and yes I know I'm pretty lucky of from an outside perspective.

One generic piece of advice I saw on hacker news a while back is "if you struggle between multiple options for long and don't know what to choose just flip a coin, as outcomes might be similar with information at hand", just get going with something. People on HN will be able to help you with "how", but "if your should try"?

You won't be the only human on earth, that doesn't have talents or can't look back and find moments in your life, where you were in some kind of flow while working or felt a deep passion for something. You will get there, you can do it!

Sometimes a weird looking CV is our reason for not even trying. Isn't there some story you can create around your cv to pitch to employers? There must be. Sure there is hope. But that's where you start, find a forward perspective and start applying. If you don't roll the dice, they can't show a six. If you don't start folding the paper, it will never be an airplane.

Best and I hope 2023 well be a pivotal year for you! Thorsten

thorio··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
One thing I read on HN a couple of month back and really clicked with me is:

"If you really struggle to decide between two options and you begin to waste time by postponing the decision, this often indicates, that both options are very similar in expectable outcome"

At least in situations, where you can't access more info about path A or B, indecisiveness may indicate "go flip a coin"

Sounds simple, but made me aware and helped in a few situations not wasting time already.

Did you actually end up being able to test the app?
thorio··on Ask HN: Why have no career network centered around missions and skills only?
It's true of course, that missions change all the time. Also people that try to get something off the ground don't only push one thing but often try several things in parallel. Sometimes they don't want to disclose that in an early stage even.

Still I think it's valueable to have user profiles centered around skills rather than track records. It might not be possible to estimate ones seniority otherwise, but by relying on track records to assess if someone is a valueable contact we make personal success way more path dependent than it should be.

To me the same goes for missions / projects. I find it questionable if something really has higher potential of successful execution just because it's done by people that had success before. I know that's what draws attention to certain projects that often gets them funding and early traction. But recently it still turns out to be a bad idea to begin with after a few rounds of funding, while other projects suffer from lacking exactly that focus.

I'm sharing open thaughts here mainly to be honest. Will take a closer look at AngelList for that too. Thought it was more of a funding thing to be honest.

thorio··on Ask HN: Why have no career network centered around missions and skills only?
Thanks a lot for your insights. I fully agree, that the setup necessary for efficient recruiting is the one LinkedIn serves, I will say, that I think that exactly this is what causes the trouble to me because it pulls value away from the individuals to recruiters and larger cooperations. Maybe I'm wrong about this, and people primarily want the public CV being found by recruiters thing and what I imagine is like a more niche kind of thing not applicable to a large group of people as a career network.

I might be too idealistic, but I imagine a community, that is more on eye level with everyone not hiding behind long track records. I find it desirable to be more transparent and make advancement easier. Otherwise see both over filtering and valuable connections falling through the grid because one doesn't have the ivy league school and fang experience in his profile.

thorio··on The struggles of building a feed reader
Both true. The internet has way more covers than actual books you could say :). Content is very much repackaged over and over again.

However, I found, that URLs don't change as much as the titles and slightly edited texts - it will happens if course, but to go beyond that you would need a similarity hash of the actual content of the page and even that reaches it's limits pretty quickly:

Sometimes a change of title + few edits can change the whole narrative of a near-identical article. Looks like currently even ai can't solve that. And interestingly I've seen that happen even for pretty large newspapers "whatever clicks"...

Since zebra is meant to enable debate/exchange of perspectives on specific contents I think only URLs give some degree of certainty about pointing to the same content.

Happy to hear other ideas!

thorio··on The struggles of building a feed reader
True, I realized this when developing the initial version of zebra I posted a few days back. However relying on a SQL server that requires a unique URL turned out to be the easiest and most effective solution.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=thorio.solutio...

Beyond that you probably could cover the last 2 or so percent using string comparison against title and description or peppeteering the website.

Zebra as a social feed reader was a great learning: for example that a lot of sites circulate their content multiple times in different packages (/tiles) and very few flag paywalled content - still working on recognizing that. Any hints for a good way to distinguish that, when investigating the urls?

Not yet, but if more users request that, I'm happy to adapt the UI to serve for larger screens and as a web version too!
