thomzi12··on Medium-hard SQL interview questions
Hey, HN! Since I couldn't find a good resource online for the self-join and window function SQL questions I've encountered over the years in interviews, I made my own study guide which I'm now sharing publicly as a Quip doc. Would love your feedback or thoughts!
thomzi12··on Clearview AI helps law enforcement match photos of people to their online images
How did Clearview scrape so much of Facebook? Is this fundamentally hard for Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, etc. to stop if someone determined wants to suck in photos for a tool like this?
thomzi12··on Show HN: I'm building a robot that performs haircuts [video]
Awesome! Some quick comments:

* What about non-human use cases, like shearing pets between seasons? If you can solve getting pets to stay still could be a possible initial use case. Seems easier to get traction!

* As pitched, this seems more like an add-on than standalone product. Where could this be an add-on? Airport bar? Airport massage parlor? You need people to get into the door, the haircut won't be it but it can be part of the experience!

* Would salons/barbers be interested in buying this device so that they can service more customers, i.e. increase customers/hour or a similar metric? Run some surveys/ask owners to find out!

* Youtube video for the next iteration of the product can be sharper ... see something like Paolo from Tokyo videos, etc. Editing matters. You want this idea to go viral!

thomzi12··on 2019 Stack Overflow Developer Survey Results
That's really interesting to see more Latinx developers (7.3%) than East Asian developers (5.3%) as a proportion of all professional developers. It's an awesome surprise, but is there a measurement reason for this? Unfortunately, this doesn't match my experience working in tech in the Bay.
thomzi12··on Skim reading is the new normal. The effect on society is profound
Contrarian opinion: repetitive writing is actually important in helping us remember what the article or book is talking about. Humans learn via repetition. If we took out the fluff, the article/book would be <50% as effective as it is with fluff and repetition.

Why didn’t he leave to the private sector?
thomzi12··on Introducing Google AI
What was the point of the rebranding?
thomzi12··on Amazon Raises Annual Prime Price 20% to $119
I actually quit Prime after moving to San Francisco — it felt hard to justify when grocery stores and other shopping is blocks away. People forget about walking, haha. I just don’t buy enough stuff to warrant the subscription.
thomzi12··on 50M Facebook profiles harvested for Cambridge Analytica in major data breach
Did you not read the article? Millions of users took a personality test that had nothing to do with politics, and that data was sold to the Trump campaign for targeting.

When did Obama’s campaign ever do that?

thomzi12··on MoviePass CEO says the app tracks your location before and after movies
I don't get the outrage over this -- haven't Uber and Lyft and Google been doing this for years?
thomzi12··on Pandas on Ray – Make Pandas faster
Could someone compare this to Dask? Would you use the two in different situations?
thomzi12··on The Poison We Pick
Um, people have been “rabidly” consuming fiction since the Greeks created theater?
thomzi12··on What People Think You Can’t Say in Silicon Valley
To echo someone else's post, saying you work at [a boring tech company] working on [boring ideas] is what is truly taboo in Silicon Valley.
thomzi12··on A Clash of Cultures
Interesting article, kind of wish it started off with some context and simple reporting on the situation though -- I'm not familiar with the story.
thomzi12··on How Much Are People Making from the Sharing Economy?
Without earnings per hour metric, it's hard to make much of this post.
thomzi12··on Inside Uber’s Aggressive, Unrestrained Workplace Culture
Yes, it helped. But how much jerkery are we willing to tolerate? And, for how long? Uber isn't an early stage start-up anymore.
thomzi12··on Inside Uber’s Aggressive, Unrestrained Workplace Culture
What exactly makes you think Uber would hire your friend? This isn't Wall Street in the 80s where hustling is what matters. You have to have technical skills and experience working in tech. Your friend might want a job at Uber, doubtful he'd get one.
