That version is significant because it is the latest LTS release. Most servers use LTS releases.

thomasdziedzic··on The Thrax Programming Language
> I'm more interested in why someone created a new programming language.

The why in this case is "a little toy language ... to learn .. how dynamically-typed interpreted languages worked"

thomasdziedzic··on The Thrax Programming Language
> I would like the page to have a few snippets of code in that language, just so I can get a quick overview.

The linked page on github https://thrax.elijahpotter.dev/ has some snippets that you can click on. The first one called tour.th has a very brief overview of the language.

thomasdziedzic··on Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025
"only applies to commercial organizations. An announcement for individual consumer pricing will be made at a later date." - https://redmondmag.com/Articles/2024/04/04/Microsoft-Reveals...

I'm guessing the individual pricing might be cheaper.

thomasdziedzic··on V0: Generative UI
I looked at https://hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0/item/37974743.json?pri... which gives back a time of 1697977491 which converts to "Sun Oct 22 2023 12:24:51 GMT+0000" which was 3 days ago.

Not sure why it's showing posted "5 hours ago".

I thought github was injecting ads into pages now, but I think you just mean that someone built a linux distro and is hosting the main page on github pages? Is that it?

thomasdziedzic··on LibSQL, a SQLite fork that accepts contributions and uses Rust for new features
I think this is a continuation of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33081159

This is a fork of sqlite that was created 5 days ago.

A new license, code of conduct, readme, and github action was added so far.

I think the name is confusing, libsql sounds like a library for parsing sql which this is not.

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Does anyone else think SQL needs help?

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: How to manage (legally) a geographically distributed community?

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Can you imagine a world where anybody could do any job?
> Imagine everybody would be competent doctor and farmer and entertainer and so on : all competent.

So we're pretending we're living in a world like it's that one Matrix scene where Trinity instantly learns to fly a helicopter?

> What would the labor market look like?

My guess is that it would look like the distribution of the demand on resources. So something like what we have today, just with more automation since everyone also is competent at automating things.

thomasdziedzic··on Formalising Gödel's incompleteness theorems, I

Completely agree!

> having a powerful tool to mechanically check it has nearly limitless potential

As someone working in the industry and playing with theorem provers in my spare time, I've never been able to bridge the gap between industry and theory enough to be able to use these formal methods on projects that I'm on.

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: What is the best language/framework for getting things done on the web?
Ruby on Rails
thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Is Heroku Currently Down?
> Is Heroku Currently Down?

I'm not seeing any issues logging in or otherwise.

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Chrome says I have 83 compromised passwords. How do I fix this?
As far as I know, this will have to be a manual process of enumerating all your accounts, and changing the password for each one using their own reset password mechanism.

I did this when I first started using a password manager and the couple of hours that I put in years ago have paid off over and over again with peace of mind and better security practices.

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Where to buy old 8-bit computers?
I caught a similar bug about a year or so ago, I bought a replica instead https://retrogames.biz/products/thec64/ and it satisfied my retro computing interest even though it wasn't original hardware.

If you do go down this path, note that retrogames has 2 similar products, the c64 (mini) and the c64 (maxi), the maxi is probably the best one to go with since it has a working keyboard.

thomasdziedzic··on Why San Francisco Is Denying Reality
I have so many questions,

Do the drugs/needles/etc. get provided by the government that are known to be safe or is it bring your own drugs and anything goes?

What are the legal liabilities the government could face if there is an overdose/fatality as a result of this, or if someone gets injured or attacks someone else?

thomasdziedzic··on Show HN: Stop Hate and Anger in Slack
I think this could be a good teaching tool for why some words or phrases are offensive.

For example, I personally don't find the word sucker or the poop emoji offensive enough to get flagged. Maybe I'm missing context? With this tool, I don't get a chance to learn about my inappropriate words/emojis.

Also another feature I would like to see are suggestions on what phrase or word is better.

For example, when talking about blacklists and whitelists, you could suggest using the words denylist and allowlist as alternatives. Or when you write "the food tastes like (poop emoji)" it could suggest, "I disagree with the taste of the food".

nit: you mentioned you built this tool in a month but the copyright reads "2020-2022".

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: What monitor would you recommend for a home setup?
I'm a fan of the Dell 27" 4k monitors. I have a P2715Q and a U2718Q. Both have worked for me for years without a single issue.
thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Should I accept the free Windows 11 upgrade?
> Regular GAC 21H2 will last you only until June 13, 2023.

I got that date from the retirement date for Windows 10 Home and Pro at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-...

So maybe 21H2 will be supported until Jun 13, 2023 but there will be newer feature updates for Windows 10 which will be supported until October 14th, 2025.

thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Should I accept the free Windows 11 upgrade?
I don't see any major pros or cons in upgrading to Windows 11 and I'm happy with Windows 10 Pro, so I'm going to hold off until I see something compelling or when October 14, 2025 is around the corner, when official support for Windows 10 is supposed to end.
thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: Which programming language do you plan to learn in 2022?
Mathematica
thomasdziedzic··on Ask HN: What is your favorite programming language and why?
Ruby because I feel productive using it and it allows you to write pretty elegant code. I also think bundler is the single greatest dependency management tool that's bundled with a language.
