thisisweirdok··on America’s Professional Elite: Wealthy, Successful and Miserable
This kind of thing blows my mind. If I were making that much money I'd work for 5 years and retire.

I sometimes wonder if that's why I don't make that much? Has anyone here done this and retired?

thisisweirdok··on Block Ads in Apps on Android
Hell, some paid apps have ads which drives me insane.
thisisweirdok··on This Cat Does Not Exist
To be fair, the site isn't called "This is a realistic looking cat the doesn't exist"
thisisweirdok··on When India Kicked Out Coca-Cola, Local Sodas Thrived
I was intentionally equating them to emphasize the problem. If you're not educated to discern the difference between traditional education and advertisement, then there is no practical difference.

Coca-Cola (and advertisements for it) is more widely available than basic education. I personally think this is unethical on part of the advertiser, doubly so when you're selling something that's both unhealthy and somewhat addicting. There are populations in the world who can't read, but can recognize the Coca-Cola logo.

thisisweirdok··on Japanese government will access home devices in security survey
So what's the alternative? No one does pen testing and then any government (or motivated individual) can access your data? I'd rather my own government do it than no one at all.

It is particularly hairy, and I don't think there's a perfect solution for the average person.

thisisweirdok··on Drug Combo Creates New Neurons from Neighboring Cells
I too would like to know more. Extending on the computer analogy, even if it is just adding more blank drives — does that mean your brain has additional _capacity_ for cognition?

Or is it more like those people who inject oil into their muscles in an attempt to look more buff without the work (and often end up looking grotesque instead).

thisisweirdok··on When India Kicked Out Coca-Cola, Local Sodas Thrived
So is birthday cake, the key is moderation and education — not banning everything that's remotely bad for you.

Unfortunately Coca-Cola spends more on their own form of education (advertising) than many countries spend on actual education.

thisisweirdok··on Regulate Facebook and Twitter? The Case Is Getting Stronger
I guess? it's a weird stretch. There's nothing specifically protecting what a business decides to censor other than the fact that the government can't engage in censorship.
thisisweirdok··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
NIST simply recommends a minimum length for passwords, all other requirements don't really provide worthwhile security.
thisisweirdok··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
Most of these patterns are fine if implemented correctly. It's not hard to trigger a modal with a URL for example.

Password managers work fine with multi-page forms, you just have to label the inputs correctly and the user might have to press a button twice.

Magic links are fine, and can even be good if it's you include a log-in link in the email that does the work for you. Certainly better than a weak password (most people don't use password managers).

I'd suggest that implementing a magic link for log-in would be superior to all of these recommendations because it's a better layer of security than the _literal nothing_ most people use to secure their accounts.

thisisweirdok··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
They're not the only one. Don't shame other people for their preferences.
thisisweirdok··on Regulate Facebook and Twitter? The Case Is Getting Stronger
Which network effects are locking you in to using Facebook and not self-publishing, or using Twitter, reddit, hackernews, Medium, Tumblr, or any other website?
thisisweirdok··on Regulate Facebook and Twitter? The Case Is Getting Stronger
No. Facebook the company can publish or not publish whatever they want. They can censor you all they want. It has nothing to do with free speech as outlined in the constitution (which again, protects individual people from government censorship).
thisisweirdok··on Regulate Facebook and Twitter? The Case Is Getting Stronger
You have a poor understanding of free speech. If you use someone else's service/platform, you have zero right to free speech (certain speech is protected, but it's very limited).

The freedom of speech is specifically protection from government censorship. E.G., If you're publishing a newspaper the government can't come by and tell you what to say in it. The newspaper can publish (or not publish) anything they want.

thisisweirdok··on Regulate Facebook and Twitter? The Case Is Getting Stronger
>Nor do I want a single entity (as Facebook/Twitter exist today) to have that control.

If you're operating a business you fundamentally need that control.

The platform you're talking about it the internet. It already exists. You can use it to say whatever you want within law. If you use someone else's servers to do so they can boot you, just like I can kick someone out of my house.

thisisweirdok··on A Love Letter to the People Who Build the Internet Archive
It's crazy to think of the internet without the Internet Archive. It's really fundamental work.
thisisweirdok··on Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus
This Amazon process has been complete shit for every idiot city who jumped on (my city included). I call the mayor's line here to leave messages about stuff like this every time it happens and say "see, you dummies this was a bad deal"

This has happened with Amazon, Casinos, GE, The Olympics, F1 racing... cities need to not be so fucking desperate to sell out their residents to the highest bidder.

I'd be more amenable to a property tax increase than any of this garbage.

thisisweirdok··on Drivers claim Uber won’t pay fees to launch forced arbitration cases
They say no and will reject your contract. Now you have to find another project. When you're freelancing there are times when it's very hard to say no because you don't necessarily know when the next job is coming.
thisisweirdok··on Drivers claim Uber won’t pay fees to launch forced arbitration cases
I'm getting really sick of large corporations essentially moulding bureaucracy to benefit themselves and fuck over everyone else.

I'm also seeing things like popup more frequently like NET90 payment terms... or accounting departments that won't pay someone unless they fill out a form 100% correctly (oh, and BTW if you fill out the form incorrectly they'll sit on their hands and NOT notify you... so you basically only find out via nagging).

If I owed my bank money you think I could sit around twiddling my thumbs waiting for them to guess what the proper request format is?

I recently had a company tell me that they only accept invoices ONE DAY A MONTH and there's nothing I can do about it. Uh, excuse me?

Forced arbitration is another wonderful example of course. Just sit around basically in a siege knowing that almost no individual person can outlast you (basically Uber's business model anyway, undercut the competition and put them out of business with time).

thisisweirdok··on Ask HN: Any success stories with token-based employee incentives?
To be honest all of that sounds terrible. Getting a job that compensates me with actual money and using that to buy lottery tickets seems more fruitful.
thisisweirdok··on Pompeo Hints at Huawei Ultimatum to Countries Buying Equipment
I can't imagine China wouldn't retaliate on such a ban? Maybe Apple will have to scale back those expectations on sales in China again?
thisisweirdok··on The Psychological Trap of Freelancing
If you don't need to pay for health insurance out of pocket or have a family, sure. This is possible.
thisisweirdok··on What It’s Like to Work Inside Apple’s ‘Black Site’
>“It was made pretty plain to us that we were at-will employees and they would fire us at any time,”

most employees across the country are at-will, do people not know this?

thisisweirdok··on Biography of Christopher “moot” Poole: The Hacker Known as “4chan”
Well you're kind of insulated from actually pushing anything interesting out from within Google. You've got shareholders and constant growth to deal with after all.

It's just that by contrast 4chan was this wildly weird often terrible thing. It was a cornerstone of the weird internet for some time. Google is not even remotely weird, if anything Google is responsible for making the internet _less_ weird.

thisisweirdok··on Apple to contribute to U.S. teen's education for spotting FaceTime bug
It's not a falsehood. I pay a higher tax rate on some of my income than Apple pays on average.
thisisweirdok··on Biography of Christopher “moot” Poole: The Hacker Known as “4chan”
Seems like a waste to be a middle manager at Google, but maybe he just wants to be a normal dude.
thisisweirdok··on Apple to contribute to U.S. teen's education for spotting FaceTime bug
Seriously. They'd get a ton of bad reports like everyone with a bug bounty program, but Apple isn't exactly running lean on resources.
thisisweirdok··on Apple to contribute to U.S. teen's education for spotting FaceTime bug
As far as companies go, Apple has enough money to basically be a deity. I think more of it should be in the hands of their employees and the American taxpayer.
thisisweirdok··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
No because you're paying them more than ads generate
