thisisnico··on Airlines scour the world for scarce 737 Max simulators
It's worth it from a financial perspective. If a plane goes down it hurts the brand and public trust significantly. People in general are already afraid of flying, lets not give them more reasons :)
thisisnico··on Comac engineers miscalculated the forces that would be placed on the engines
I agree with you, I've seen articles like this on hacker news for the past 5 years about how China is failing and China is unable to produce what North America is capable of. And the interesting thing is yes, at first they fail. Why should we expect them to get it right the first time? You learn with practice, and mistakes, and testing. I guarantee eventually they will have a functioning aircraft. This is normal process, with a narrative western spin.
thisisnico··on How to Generate Sales Without a Marketing Team
Agreed, reading this, I'm like, wow really?
thisisnico··on Education and Men without Work
Agreed. The entire construction and trade industry is huge and these people get paid ridiculous money because nobody wants to do these jobs. These are pretty manly jobs imo.
thisisnico··on Why Windows 10 Sucks or Everything Wrong with Microsoft Windows
IT costs money yes, but it's not like there is ZERO ROI. Just because the value isn't immediately obvious doesn't mean it's not helping the business and it's bottom line. I agree that certain aspects of IT you should try to minimize cost because the value add is minimal, or because throwing more money at that aspect of IT does not help the business. But other aspects of IT that improve efficiency of the organization or even multiply the capabilities of the business will give you a significant ROI. Just to put it into perspective, is Marketing your business exclusively lose you money? Obviously not. There is an ROI, but it's not always immediately measurable.

I'm sorry whatever education or experience had failed you in seeing this. The successful business will recognize the value of every department and attempt to maximize the return where it makes sense.

I agree with your other points. The entire business industry is on Windows. Almost all applications work on Windows or integrate with Windows. Most employees are experienced with Windows. the cost of retraining, the loss of potential talent, the cost of not being able to integrate fully with other businesses that are on Windows are some of the reasons why they are entrenched.

I have a finance degree, business degree, comp sci degree, and run my own business plus have worked IN IT at successful multi-million dollar orgs and the most successful focus on IT as well as other departments to push value add investment in those departments.

thisisnico··on Ultraprocessed Food Consumption and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
This is pretty much exclusively what I do. I almost never go into the center isles. Everything I buy is fresh/real unprocessed foods.
thisisnico··on Travis Kalanick Is Exiting His Uber Holdings Uber Quickly
When most of your net worth is tied to a stock of a single potentially volatile company like UBER, you sure as hell want to sell that off and diversify your portfolio. He's not involved with the company any-longer, he has no reason to keep his stock. If he was still in-charge I get that you want to display confidence in the business and keep the stock.

TLDR: Most of your net worth in a single stock is insane.

thisisnico··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
It's very difficult to text and drive, driving stick you require far, far more attention to speed/gear/etc at all times. When I drive a stick car I can't doze off, I can't really go on mental autopilot like when I drive an automatic car. This is coming from someone who drove stick for 10 years, now driving an automatic vehicle. - Personal Anecdote.
thisisnico··on America’s Air Quality Worsens, Ending Years of Gains, Study Says
EV's are harder on tires though because of the weight, does it balance out?
thisisnico··on Total sleep deprivation impairs attention and higher-order cognitive processes
I've read this as Bezos. Yes, I have a rich diet of amazon.
thisisnico··on Total sleep deprivation impairs attention and higher-order cognitive processes
We're not sure yet but we believe this is important to respiratory function in most people.
thisisnico··on Can gaming become the happy-hour for remote teams?
League of legends I've noticed is pretty popular among women too.
thisisnico··on Basic Social Skills Guide (2012)
The best advice I've ever been given is when I didn't ask. Honestly trying to please people doesn't always help them out. Being the bad guy can help them more than sulking with them. A good friend will care more about you than what you think of them.
thisisnico··on Intel desktop board BIOS update end-of-life
I remember the K8, Almost every gamer I knew had one. Everybody was rooting for AMD at the time. They were the king. Dual core, 64bit support, almost double the IPC of Intel, lower power than Intel, and more stable. The frequencies weren't as high. My 2.6Ghz Athlon 64 3700+ demolished many Intel CPU's. And then I remember when Core2Duo became a thing like you said. Completely ruined AMD in every benchmark. I believe that Intel had switched their architecture over to what was Pentium Mobile at the time and refactored it. Prescott was optimized for frequency, but the IPC was terrible, as was the heat. We had 4GHZ CPU's back in 2004.

I work in Manufacturing IT, I can confirm that there is considerable legacy equipment. Thing is, these machines typically cost more than a house, some as much as $2.5M+ dollars. Would you demo your house and rebuild in 20 years because of a leaky roof? These machines are mortgaged the same way, the bank secures the asset. They will work for 20+ years if you maintain them, and continue to produce.
thisisnico··on Perl Master Plan
The status quo had changed quite a lot in the past 10 years. Anything can happen.
thisisnico··on 16-inch MacBook Pro

thisisnico··on Dell Unveils Subscription Model to Counter Amazon, Microsoft

thisisnico··on Delays in Boeing Max Return Began with Near-Crash in Simulator
Didn't I read from another hacker news poster that the software engineering and design was outsourced? Anyone know?
thisisnico··on It can make more sense to build new renewable capacity than run old coal plants
Oh, can I not wait to ditch Ontario's Power for my own Renewables. The costs are reaching extremes now. We have some of the most expensive power in the world.
thisisnico··on Lots of Job Hunting, but No Job, Despite Low Unemployment
I'm sure the professors are keeping things hush-hush because it's the future of their own career. It's in their best interest to bring people in. Everyone in the process has skin in the game and they all want more students in the program. I feel like the universities/colleges should have mandatory 3rd party career specialists consult with students, in the students best interests.
thisisnico··on BBC News launches 'dark web' Tor mirror
Is it possible to operate a TOR node through a corporate entity? The corporation assumes liability as does insurance.
thisisnico··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
Living in Ontario the only thing I'm worried about is minor flooding, nothing on the scale that you see on the coasts. Storms (Nothing like in the US), Snow, Rain, Sun. No real major catastrophes possible.
thisisnico··on Uptime 15,364 days – The Computers of Voyager [video]
I bet that these devices are local only. Working in IT the security measures for these devices are likely that they are sitting on their own isolated VLAN. Routing is likely controlled by layer 3 switches with dedicated ACLs to only allow certain systems to obtain access to that VLAN. If it's a rail company the network itself is likely protected by an Cisco ASA or ASA style dedicated network security appliance. Networks have been hardened pretty well. Most often the exploits that IT is worrying about is application-based and user-based (social engineering).
thisisnico··on Elliptic Curve Cryptography Explained
Yup!
thisisnico··on The benefits of a more asynchronous workplace
I believe there are many studies, even posted here that lying down < Sitting < Standing < Walking. Lying down for long periods of time is worse for you. (sleeping excluded). Less activity with the body = worse for the body.

thisisnico··on Microplastics found in 93% of bottled water tested in global study
Living in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, I can confirm that our water is extremely clean and good to drink. Additionally our city was rated one of the best tasting tap waters for all of Ontario, cities literally compete for quality water. Contrast that to Flint michigan across the river from me.
