thisOtterBeGood··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
Found this gem in Recorder.cpp of generals:

//Kris: Patch 1.01 November 10, 2003 (integrated changes from Matt Campbell)
// Since we don't seem to have any *visible* desyncs when replaying games, but get this warning
// virtually every replay, the assumption is our CRC checking is faulty. Since we're at the
// tail end of patch season, let's just disable the message, and hope the users believe the
// problem is fixed. -MDC 3/20/2003
  //TheInGameUI->message("GUI:CRCMismatch");
thisOtterBeGood··on Egoless Engineering
Those Galadriel memes had me in tears :')
thisOtterBeGood··on My son (9 yrs old) used plain JavaScript to make a game, and wants your feedback
Very good! I love it! Hope he keeps programming. Tell him i played against a flying snake and won with every calculation right! :) I loved the animation. There is ofc always ways to improve this but I think this is a very good result!

An easy thing to improve would be to center the screen. Then it would be easier to play for people with larger screens or on large tablet screens.

thisOtterBeGood··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
Yeah, should've lead differently.
thisOtterBeGood··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the tunnels inside the Maya Pyramid Temples at Copan
Very nice. Small improvement idea: Move the camera along paths in such a way that it does not glitch through solid earth.
thisOtterBeGood··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
Interesting. Red next to green creates a different kind of contrast. It looks like its glowing (vibrant border), the same way our eyes perceive something very close compared to something far away. That is just my observation, I'm not sure If there is some scientific evidence for that.
thisOtterBeGood··on It's Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore [video]
No. We have two kids and have been agreeing on a third. There are no rational arguments for another child: We will sacrifice sleep, money, self-entertainment. It always results in more work for parents.
thisOtterBeGood··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
It was two teams working in parallel the one from Virgin and the other from westwood. Both publishers had the "dune license".

The wiki page about dune 2 reveals more insight into the timeline: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_II#Development

Funnily enough the developers of Dune 2 thought Dune 1 was cancelled and were suprised when the Cryo team released early.

thisOtterBeGood··on Write shaders for the (sim) Vegas sphere
Why would anyone pay that much if he gets into television cheaper? I doubt that number.
thisOtterBeGood··on The coolest robot I've ever built [video]
So let's complain about people that are complaining, that's much better. Surely noone can complain about that.
thisOtterBeGood··on MiniOS – a lightweight Linux distribution designed for USB drive
It can be a nice tool but you can make mistakes. You should always visualize the scroll progress. In this instance for each scroll-tick they should move a focus or selection indicator over the screenshots, so that you feel your scroll progress...

Edit: I went back... not they don't even recognize small scroll ticks, they just ignore them... :) You have to violently scroll to progress.

thisOtterBeGood··on A video game where you are an operating system
Found a small bug i think. If i assign a process to the cpu just when it dies (during the fly anmiation i guess) the game freezes (Cannot click any buttons anymore). https://i.imgur.com/4gbwwEZ.png
thisOtterBeGood··on Show HN: Tetris, but the blocks are ARM instructions that execute in the browser
What an amazing idea.

Another thing to make the entry easier: Create a "Memory" label for the memory area. You mention it in the intro text but color it in the R12 address color which was confusing for me.

Missed that memory space totally while playing the first two times.

thisOtterBeGood··on Rules for developers to design beautiful UIs without a designer
Many people (including me mostly) don't understand why their eyes feel something as "good-looking" or "beauty". It boils down to symmetry being a big part of it, and sometimes symmetry creates working solution. A bridge being the perfect example for that since you need to balance the weight between both sides of the bridge it's easy to get this while also "looking good". But I believe symmetry is not the only thing our brain accounts to beauty. I would love to know more about that topic.
thisOtterBeGood··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio

thisOtterBeGood··on A URL shortener not shortening the URL but makes it look very dodgy
The Tony Abbott story has been on hacker news before. It's so funny.
thisOtterBeGood··on The Mystery of the Dune Font
DUNC :D:D

They went for the right decision there, I wouldn't call it cheating. It's a nice to incorporate the importance/uniqueness of that planet in the dune world. They could've just went for a horizontal line/pipe and noone wouldve cared.

thisOtterBeGood··on Amazon Alexa is on pace to lose $10B this year
The "light on in current room" works for me. Maybe you have "overloaded" the "light" name.
thisOtterBeGood··on Documenting software architecture with arc42
Im using draw.io Just because it integrates Well to jira and confluence, But there really isnt much difference apart from license costs.
thisOtterBeGood··on Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” synth sounds
Are you saying popularity ist devaluing music? How so?
thisOtterBeGood··on Pepsi: Breathtaking Design Strategy (2008) [pdf]
They probably just got lost in many design reviews. At the end they couln't "see" the designs anymore. Also their test group was probably biased: They probably used the same guys to review all design iterations, so their opinion developed along with each iteration.
thisOtterBeGood··on Pepsi: Breathtaking Design Strategy (2008) [pdf]
Thinking the same. They've made some fatal mistakes there. Heck of a lesson for the agency there :D
thisOtterBeGood··on How to Draw Animals (1930)
If you had trouble finding a fun topic for drawing, try something you've never tried. Some ideas: Fantasy maps, landscape concepts, items from your table, building plans, character faces, character bodys, .. Another idea: Check out open source games (github, etc.) who are looking for artists.
thisOtterBeGood··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
This is good advice. In the past this has been frown upon and has been seen as weakness but it is something that should be regarded like seeing the dentist.
thisOtterBeGood··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
I also believe standards, expectations, perspective is where op can learn the most.

Op, you mention things in your post that indicate what you believe would make you happy: > I have never been a rockstar programmer. > smart people are able to come up with libraries, services and various solutions from scratch

Do you believe the people who fulfil these dreams are happy because they came up with libraries? I don't think so. I did some cool stuff and I did it for free till 1 o'clock in the morning.. For free! No one even knows about some of those apps/libraries, I've never published it and I so much fun I still come back to looking at the result years later. So I believe a key for you might be to try to have fun doing it. Also I don't believe you just choose to be a "rockstar programmer" and also there is no fun guaranteed if someone else might call you this. You need to find a way having fun doing stuff, not achieving things.

There are many gaps in your description of you life. It's important how you fill the rest of your day and also what kind of thoughts go through your day throughout the day, but as others has pointed out you might just suffer from burnout.

Something that might help you to find things you like doing: Imagine you are the last person on earth. What would still make fun for you to be doing alone? If you don't know the answer to that you need to start looking for new things to do. Things you never tried before.
