thinkloop··on Facebook bans, sends C&D letter to developer of Unfollow Everything extension
Now we're only missing what the two languages are for "cease and desist"
thinkloop··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
I have personally never heard of, or seen, any scams or malware related to mastadon - aren't you giving too much benefit of the doubt?

My best guess is that their lists of competitors to keep an eye on got mixed up with other stuff. Or, of course, that they simply don't want to promote competitors on their platform, which would be normal for any non-monopoly.

thinkloop··on The Applecare Hustle
Insurance is a premium paid to reduce volatility. If one can afford the volatility, then that person should definitely not get the insurance. A typical HN'er should probably not insure things under $2K. Insurance is NOT about trying to "profit" by better analysing a transaction. It is a service purchased for volatility-reduction.
thinkloop··on Delays aren’t good enough – Apple must abandon its surveillance plans
> should you just accept it when they decide to install one of those devices in your home?

The device they installed is invisible and you will never have any way of knowing they were in there, it's irrelevant what you accept.

thinkloop··on Deno Deploy Beta 2
How does 5G factor into all that?
thinkloop··on Show HN: We built an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos
My phone photos are 2.2 MB each. 1,000 GB's is 1M MB's which equates to approximately 450,000 photos. At $18.99/TB/year, 1,000 photos would cost ~$0.42 a year.

Photos can easily be 30 MB each or more, especially from dedicated cameras. If all photos were 30 MB it would cost $5.69 per year for 1,000 photos.

Not making any point, just calculated it for myself and thought to share.

> I want nothing of mine (of value) in the cloud.

What's the issue with the cloud if you encrypt client-side? It's off-site backup. Isn't it too risky to have your life's work on a few drives in the same location?

thinkloop··on Yt-dlp – A YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
I love this, but that means you are now paying 3 times: ads/premium, sponsored messages, and patreon. Even if you block ads - as well as the much more complicated sponsored messages - you are still paying by having to manage that system and work around its edge cases. Direct "donation" should include ad-free and sponosor-free access to videos.
thinkloop··on Yt-dlp – A YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
YouTube premium sends money to creators as people watch their videos. According to a redditor [1], CGP Grey (a prominent youtuber) claims to get more money from premium users than ads.

thinkloop··on SEC charges Netflix insider trading ring
You forgot the (non-linear) increased risk of getting caught with each iteration.
thinkloop··on Poly Network hacker returns $258M after stealing $600M
They gave back less than half, they still have > $300M, they are equally "criminal" as before, however much that was. I don't see the benefit they get for returning a portion.
thinkloop··on An open letter against Apple's new privacy-invasive client-side content scanning
Google Photos and Gmail openly and heavily scan server-side, and I'm sure a lot of us use them, how do we reconcile that?
thinkloop··on CalyxOS – De-Googled Android Alternative
> I'd very much like my next phone to run Linux

Why again? Android is already free and open source and Linux doesn't have good answers for the proprietary goodies

thinkloop··on YouTube channel “TechLead” creator has created a crypto and pulled the rug
> I flat out don't understand the "selling without selling" part.

He HODLS 1M in his wallet in solidarity with the community to show he is not selling, but simultaneously secretly sells inflation to profit the same - is what the author is claiming.

thinkloop··on Electronic lottery tickets as micropayments (1997)
Thank you for that response, I didn't realize the lottery was happening at the moment of payment. I thought tickets were given out then the draw happens at a later date and the tickets are redeemed then. This makes sense! Thanks for clarifying.
thinkloop··on Electronic lottery tickets as micropayments (1997)
I understand the bit about doing less payments is cheaper than doing more payments. The part that everyone is glossing over is:

"and you receive tickets at 1/2500 probability"

How do you receive these tickets? How can they be trusted? How can you guarantee they are honored? If we can receive lottery tickets in a cheap, trusted, secure manner why don't we just use the same system for the money itself?

thinkloop··on Electronic lottery tickets as micropayments (1997)
Where do the savings come in? If you know how to securely send lottery tickets why can't you use the same system to send the money instead?
thinkloop··on Electronic lottery tickets as micropayments (1997)
Yes, I understand that, but that is only for the bank, society still has to pay for the 999 of 1000 transactions that the bank saved. Who pays for those, why would they be cheaper given that they are essentially money again.
thinkloop··on Electronic lottery tickets as micropayments (1997)
Why would transacting lottery tickets be cheaper than transacting money?

EDIT: Who pays for the lottery ticket transactions that the bank is saving?

thinkloop··on [dead]
> "There was a void that was created by a lack of these encrypted platforms," Shivers said, of the initial move to take down apps previously used by gangs. "So that created an opportunity for collaboration with our international partners, to not only develop the specific tool but also to develop the process of gathering the intelligence and disseminating the intelligence."

What void? Aren't there a ton of encrypted solutions right now?

thinkloop··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
I wonder, people always reference the Streisand Effect, but for every one of those there are a thousand complaints that go quietly heeded.
thinkloop··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
The problem is a wealth tax is almost impossible to implement. People will form crappy charities or put the money in their kids' names or move it to the Caribbean or some other gymnastics that will make worse use of the money overall.
thinkloop··on Show HN: Redact – Automated deletion for your content on social networks
How come HN doesn't have to follow delete laws allowing users to delete their messages?
thinkloop··on Freenode ops take control of 700 channels
I'm not up to speed, could you expand on what happened?
thinkloop··on M1racles: An Apple M1 covert channel vulnerability
The attackers already have whatever data you are intending them to steal/share. The author says this bug is no big deal:

>Can malware use this vulnerability to take over my computer? No.

>Can malware use this vulnerability to steal my private information? No.

thinkloop··on Playing Codenames with Language Graphs and Word Embeddings
I too built a clone for fun: https://carefulclues.com/

I added a timer, and online matchmaking, but I'm not sure the game is suitable for online matchmaking, a big part of it is chatting and knowing your teammates and opponents. Otherwise I find it better playing online even when we're in person because the board doesn't do much, you just have to be able to see it and it's annoying to see it from different angles, nice to glance at on the phone.

thinkloop··on Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money?
The rule of thumb is about 80% for me - an $80K employment salary is worth about $100K contracting.
