thinkdevcode··on Ask HN: Differences you've noticed between CS students and the self-taught?
So by "gap" you mean unable to answer some trivial questions during an interview that don't pertain to the job at all?

While I agree self-taught developers may lack knowledge in certain areas, they compensate by being able to learn quickly and efficiently for the job at hand. School taught, though not always, will lack that discipline and/or efficiency. At least in my experience, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

thinkdevcode··on Ask HN: Differences you've noticed between CS students and the self-taught?
This is going to be a highly biased answer, and will probably be downvoted. I don't think there is any difference between a "good" programmer that was self-taught or one that had a degree in CS/SE. The reason I put "good" is because, at least in my field, there are a lot of terrible programmers/coders/developers/etc that come from all backgrounds - be it self-taught or with a degree (I work in a local market for .NET). I think a persons background is a terrible starting point to determine their competence. I personally am self-taught, having started "coding" when I was about 8. I have a colleague who didn't start coding until he was in college, and I think him and I are about the same skill level. We have different strengths: he is more architecturally minded, while I am more of a "hacker" (I can figure any technical problem out though it may not be pretty). In the course of my career though, I have met many self-taught coders and university trained ones, and to me it makes almost no difference. What it comes down to is passion, and that can be extremely hard to quantify. For me personally, having been doing this for almost two decades, you just have to feel the person out. If you are passionate, you should be able to tell if they are as well.
thinkdevcode··on Why schools are failing our boys
> Kids should learn to follow rules even when they don't like them.

Except when you're forced to go through 16+ years of conforming and not being able to say "no" without being labeled a problem-child. That's a long time to be in the creative and free-thinking suppression chamber, and by my estimate most minds don't ever truly recover.

> Personally, I think asian kids achieve more things...

Personally, I think asian kids are brilliant when it comes to rote-memorization and standardized testing but they totally lack in the creativity department. Just look at all of the articles, studies, etc that show that the East has a severe lack of creativity. As an example: [1]. Ill take free-thinkers over number crunchers any day.

I added some restaurants to the Miami, FL area. I can add a bunch more to the fort lauderdale area as well, but would be nice to get some sort of reward for participating :)

thinkdevcode··on Show HN: Website 181 Took Way Longer Than a Day – YumHacker
Awesome job finishing the site! On a personal note I spend a lot of time eating out, especially at really great restaurants (5 star) all over Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL. I would love to start adding restaurants, comments, etc. to this app but there is no real "push" for me to do that. Maybe some gamification? Points/rewards/mentions/etc. so that I feel like i'm gaining something by contributing? Just a thought. There may be other people who feel the same way

I wrote this article for the people who read my fitness blog, but I believe it has sound tips for entrepreneurs as well. Thanks for reading!
thinkdevcode··on The YC VC Program
Does this mean that the outside investment of 150k is no longer available? I don't see whats to stop them from investing (150k) anyway, considering it wasn't part of YC in the first place. In my opinion 80k is a little too low, especially for international founders or those with international teams. I agree, though, that advice from VC would be better in terms of building a business versus just throwing cash at the startup.

Thanks for the link, the ions look great. Now I need to figure out which icons to use for BMI/BMR/BF/etc haha
thinkdevcode··on Show HN: My first iOS app using RubyMotion
It was approved on Saturday and as of today I've sold 8 copies. I wasn't really expecting to sell many as I put the price high and this was more of a simple project to dig into rubymotion. Thanks for the comment
thinkdevcode··on Show HN: My first iOS app using RubyMotion
I'm honestly terrible with photoshop so I don't really know how to make icons (or what they should look like). I thought about text but I think it wouldnt look right with the text right under it. I highly recommend rubymotion, it's absolutely awesome.
thinkdevcode··on Show HN: My first iOS app using RubyMotion
Simple app yet fills a need I had when talking with people about fitness/training/health. RubyMotion is awesome and I highly recommend using it if you don't want to venture down Obj-C land.

There's more choices than Romney and Obama, and I envision there being a lot of support for Johnson from people on HN.

thinkdevcode··on Show HN: Sift through recently dropped .com's in order of pronounceability, etc.
Some companies, such as GoDaddy have access to DNS zone files - this is the then resold to even more companies. Look at my reply to this article to see where you can get a list for free.
thinkdevcode··on Show HN: Sift through recently dropped .com's in order of pronounceability, etc.
To everyone looking for expiring/dropping domain lists, ive been building an app called dropparser that uses a free source (though I dont see it being mentioned in here yet). Some python code for you:

  domain_file_url = "http://www.odditysoftware.com/download/dldoms.php?domdate=

  def today():
      return str(datetime.date.today())

  def get_raw_domain_file():
      return urllib2.urlopen(domain_file_url + today()).read()

You can do what I do: don't read the comments. Pretty simple solution and you still get to find some great articles to read.
thinkdevcode··on Show HN: App creates a meal plan that satisfies your nutrition constraints
I absolutely LOVE this app. I'm very into fitness and getting recipes for my kind of diet can be pretty difficult. You definitely need to add some more recipes though as I keep getting a "simple fish chowder" for breakfast/meal 3/meal 4/meal 5 which is a little too much of the same thing.

Im looking forward to using this to track my macros.

thinkdevcode··on The only way to get hold of a human at Google
Your rake analogy is not sound. Ok so Google gives Gmail for free - as in you don't need to pay for it.

But is it really "free"? No.

They parse your emails so they know what you are buying/selling, who you are talking to, what sites you have a membership on, etc. They also use Gmail to display ads (based off of the things they learned from your emails) to make money off of you. They probably do other things i'm not even thinking of right now. So is it really free? Not at all. Is it a great source of information about you (to then be used by them to target ads at you)? Absolutely.

They should be providing support for it. I don't know what that support should look like (be it a call center, forums, etc), but I definitely think that if I give Google permission to snoop through my personal email so they can build better ads for me (which is how they make the majority of their money) I expect some damn support.

Weight is pretty much a useless metric if you are already slim and want to find out when you are going to start seeing definition (like your abdominals for example). Body Fat % is really the only indicator for that and even then it is hit or miss as it depends on the elasticity of the persons skin (like if they just lost 100 lb''s they'll have a ton of excess skin covering their abs). Cool site, i'd just like to see BF% instead of weight.

thinkdevcode··on U.S. busts Tor drug market, arrests eight
There are quite a few studies that show the correlation between legalizing drugs and domestic crime - Portugal being one of the most cited - and it's been shown that legalizing drugs actually decreases crime. We should be sending drug addicts to rehabilitation centers... Not prison, where drugs are rampant and only further increases the drug addicts dependence on narcotics.
thinkdevcode··on U.S. busts Tor drug market, arrests eight
So were they actually selling the drugs or were they just operating a marketplace similar to Silk Road?

Also, why the hell would they use PayPal?! At least SR uses bitcoins.

> For what it's worth, ASP.NET MVC is much, much less heavy than the original ASP.NET

And thats if you even use that... I use 2 open source libraries to build web apps - Nancy & Simple.Data - and they are both f'in amazing. This is about as "light" as you can be. I have a prezi presentation on my blog about using these libraries to build web apps for a few talks I gave at code conf's. (thinkdevcode.com)
