thieving_magpie··on People love working remotely
I don't believe people love remote work as much as the article suggests, but this does match my own experience.

I absolutely love it. I used to work at a very chatty office before they let me work remotely. My productivity and ability to think deeply about problems has skyrocketed.

Remote work isn't a catch all solution but it can be really effective if you match it to the right job.

thieving_magpie··on Things I learnt the hard way in thirty years of software development
I enjoyed reading that. I recognized a lot of things I used to do and a lot of things I currently do. It's nice to gain perspective on that.
thieving_magpie··on Project Svalbard: The Future of Have I Been Pwned
I understand his intent. This just isn't my first rodeo. It's not uncommon for there to be talk of grand intentions to stay on and lead after acquisition. It rarely works out that way.
thieving_magpie··on Tenants win right to physical keys over smart locks from landlords
A: Yes they did. They edited the post to remove it after my post.
thieving_magpie··on Tenants win right to physical keys over smart locks from landlords
Feudal and Authoritarian eh? Certainly not being dramatic over differing interpretations of property rights.
thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I can agree with you. It's something I've been thinking about lately and I keep coming back to how you'd define this in legal terms. It's tough.
thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I think the terminology we have here for publisher and platform don't exactly fit this scenario. I think it'd be wise to find a new label and set of rules that better fits this type of company.
thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
>I'm not sure what the right move is, but I don't think its as simple as "my private site is my private site, thats the end of it"

Well get back to me when you've worked out exactly when a private entity shouldn't be able to decide what content they allow. This ambiguity is really too difficult to figure out.

thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I was taking the point to an extreme. You're saying a society should support free speech so Facebook should let the white nationalist content stay on their site (by their own good will, not forced by government). Is that not accurate?

Deciding what I allow on my site is an exercise of my free speech. Why is hosting white nationalist free speech more important than my free speech to not host racist content?

thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
What's the exact threshold? Just curious so I can make sure to stifle my business growth so as not to give up my free speech to not host racist content.
thieving_magpie··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
Well now you're violating my free speech by telling me I can't decide what content I host on my website.
thieving_magpie··on Facebook, YouTube Blindsided by Mosque Shooter's Live Video
Not videos of people dying?
thieving_magpie··on Facebook, YouTube Blindsided by Mosque Shooter's Live Video
I'd imagine they don't want a video of a massacre on their sites. Pretty far-fetched, I know.
thieving_magpie··on A Front End Does Not Have to Be Rich
I'm a really late comer to web development. I got introduced to it through angular and react SPA. At this point I don't know how to do anything except these types of projects and not a lot of time to dedicate to learning a new (or old, depending on your view) way of doing things.

I need some type of remedial web dev training.

thieving_magpie··on Bootstrap 5 will remove jQuery as a dependency
I think it's generally considered good when you can eliminate a dependency's reliance on another dependency to function. There's nothing inherently wrong with jQuery. If the functionality and size match your needs, there shouldn't be any problem.

thieving_magpie··on Nuclear – Popcorn Time for music
Forgive my lack of clarity, I was only talking about the non-paid service.
thieving_magpie··on Nuclear – Popcorn Time for music
I haven't really thought through my moral position in detail and I probably wouldn't answer this even if I did. I'm just a random person on the internet.

thieving_magpie··on Nuclear – Popcorn Time for music
I wouldn't use this for my own moral reasons but we have different definitions of free. In this case you use "free" to mean: providing personal data and being subjected to a targeted marketing campaign in exchange for music.
thieving_magpie··on American Cheese Surplus Reaches Record High
Yes, they call that "government cheese". I can't speak to the quality but there are people out there that still try to find things that are close to the government cheese quality they loved as kids.
thieving_magpie··on American Cheese Surplus Reaches Record High
Tangential story, who remembers when the US government "accidentally created a cheese surplus so large it had to be stored in a ginormous cave."

thieving_magpie··on Coolest Things I Learned in 2018
Let's just go ahead and kill this back and forth.

Yes, sonder is a word. The definition used in the article is debatable as to whether it's a word. It's a word invented in 2012 by a guy that wrote a book about inventing new words for emotions.

>Coined in 2012 by John Koenig, whose project, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, aims to come up with new words for emotions that currently lack words.[1][2] Related to German sonder- (“special”) and French sonder (“to probe”).[3]

thieving_magpie··on Blue Apron becomes a penny stock, trading under $1 for the first time
I stopped using blue apron because I can't stand having a subscription to everything. I travel with some frequency and it's just a hassle to have to plan that ahead. All I want to do is order a box for next week without thinking about when I can cancel again for the following week.
thieving_magpie··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
There's just something about "Daddy" in a company name I can't get over.
thieving_magpie··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
In terms of names it's the GoDaddy of search engines.
thieving_magpie··on The backlash against overtourism
>Mass tourism is being treated as unique when really, we're discovering that everyone cannot have a "good" standard of living.

I've read this 5 times. I can't figure out the relation between tourism and everything else in your post. Are you just expounding on the fact that not everyone lives an equal life in the world or is there a greater point I'm missing?

thieving_magpie··on A fraudster got $12M out of a Canadian university
It's a multifaceted problem. Certainly a social engineering problem here. I think anyone that's ever seen how an ACH file works would agree there's room to improve on the technology side.
thieving_magpie··on Mmm, Pi-hole
I hope more companies offer a paid version of their site that completely removes Advertisements. I cannot stand ads and won't use a site if I can see them. I'm not trying to be a bad guy though, I want to use those sites legitimately. My only option is to not visit them until they offer a compromise.
