thiagofm··on Anyone ever hired a freelancer on equity?
I'm going to go against the people that have commented here until now.

The best you can do is take a look at how much is him helping you with the startup and you can somehow guess if he's going to leave the project anytime soon. (obvious)

Let's suppose you are giving X% equity for him and in your eye and your startup is worth Y atm(you should have that in mind?). If X*Y(the amount of "cash" you are giving him) is BIGGER than the value that he will bring for your company(be sure of it!), give him that equity!

Also, don't forget that most of people take a lot of influence from others, so... if he's THAT kind of developer(or anything else) that could make your business fly, be a leader(in the good way) and motivate him to devote to your cause.

thiagofm··on Ask HN: What do you wish your non-technical cofounder understood?
Not all technical people prefer doing programming rather interacting with a "random bunch of strangers".

I'm sure that most of technical co-founders LOVE to tell about what they are building, just... leave most of business crap out of the way and it's perfect!

Non-technical? Be supportive, that's your role.

thiagofm··on Poll: Have you moved from JavaScript to CoffeeScript?
You are exaggerating.

Is it only me who likes JS better than CS? :( It's stylish.

thiagofm··on Poll: Have you moved from JavaScript to CoffeeScript?
I think you guys obsess too much about programming languages. I doubt that anybody doing something useful cares about THAT "wohooo expressiveness".

JS is alright, dammit. You don't need CS, you need to get your shit done.

thiagofm··on Apple R&D (1989): Mousing is faster than keyboarding, but users don't believe it
1989 is the correct date.
thiagofm··on Ask HN: Should I quit my new job?
You can:

#1 try to find another job, #2 finish your degree and #3 create your own stuff.

It's up to you.

I seriously thing that you should try #1 if you want to work, #2 if #1 fails and #3 if you are passionate about something.

thiagofm··on Richard Feynman on education in Brazil
There's talent everywhere. Every human is talented but the environment that is around that human kills it.

I feel lucky to have my english to the level that is right now and still live here. But I believe you are right, most of brazilian programmers are into java/c# because you can learn it in portuguese(books)... no problem. But try to learn some node.js or anything new not being able to speak english... It's impossible. There's barely doc in english...

The education system sucks.

thiagofm··on Richard Feynman on education in Brazil
First of all, I'm brazilian.

I study computer science and things are bad here. I'm very lucky to be able to understand english well enough to have studied most of courses MIT OCW have that are interesting to me. Teachers here "teach" in a different way, it's sad. Currently, there's much potential being lost.

People here are educated to get a job and work to buy a car, house and consume a lot, which is actually perfect how the way things are in the world right now(be careful US, we have more stupid consumers than you). They are good robots to get things done to get paid.

They need a boss basically, they are educated to be the employee. Awesome for US companies that come here.

I see a good future ahead for our economy, but who is going to get really rich here are people from the outside, the rest are basically going to beneficit from a higher salary and more power to consume crap.

thiagofm··on Ask HN: Does MacBook Pro is really worth its price?
Don't buy it. I don't know how applestore ou imported products are in india, but in Brazil are fucking expensive.

I can easily get the same hardware/display/everything for half of the price, at least here.

Only buy that MBP when the MBP money isn't a real big issue for you. For now it seens that you need money for that future startup.

I know that everybody here will tell about quality, OSX(which is good!) and so on... but it's not worth it for you, for now.

I've been in that dillema for the last months. I ended up not buying anything.

Money for us, in third world countries is harder to get, you aren't making 100k/year like most of people here seens to make after they have just graduated.

Have much success in your venture! And maybe buy that macbook pro later, if you have success in it!

thiagofm··on Ask HN: what can you learn at university that you can't self-teach?
You learn how to deal with teachers that threats you like shit(and think they are good) and you also build a lot of hate to anything academic related, which can prove to be good as you won't want to be a part of the system and will give you 1000 ideas, will make you a god in execution so you will have success for sure, to not be like them.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that they give you a diploma just in case you fail as an entrepreneur -- and you won't.

The rest I think you can learn by yourself.

thiagofm··on Steve Blank says "Founders are artists." (go to 4:17 in video)
Exactly the way I see things, I bet that most of people also think about it the same way... but it feels good to listen that from likeminded people :)
thiagofm··on Why do you want to get in the YC?
Because I want to drink vanilla coke and it's expensive here to import.
thiagofm··on Ask HN: I am a depressed student, looking to travel + just be, please advice.
Don't you feel like working on something with me? (anything stupid would do). I think I'm well versed in programming(I'm heavy now on node.js). I can teach you a little bit of it if you want to and maybe build something we can be proud of.

Also, I live in Brazil and I wouldn't mind you to come here. But if I were you, I wouldn't LOL!

I'm frequently on irc in freenode as Horofox (#startups, #node.js and other channels)

thiagofm··on Looking to master Node.js? We are hiring for three paid Node.js internships
I'm developing an app(real-time) using socket.io, mongoose, express and more. Is that enough? I bet that there's some hackers here way ahead of me. >:(

I would go even unpaid to get more experience.

thiagofm··on Become Efficient or Die: The Story of BackType (YC S08)
Nice read, really good app also... btw, clojure rocks!
thiagofm··on Are the Self-Made Rich More Generous Than Heirs?
That's so obvious.
thiagofm··on Beyond Googling yourself: Greplin (YC W10)
The idea is so bad and don't have that appeal, srsly.

But getting 5mi from investors made it really look awesome... or we are in a bubble.

thiagofm··on Why It Makes Sense To Start Your Company Outside of The Valley
The good thing about the valley is that there's a lot of talent around, investors and so on.

An average/bad entrepreneur should be able to weight the lifecost there and what you get from being in the valley... I thought this article would give me more insight about what's like to live there(and why I shouldn't), instead of giving obvious reasons.

thiagofm··on Android StackExchange error page
I imagine how hard it's to dance inside that stuff.

Thumbs up for that crazy person.

thiagofm··on Tell HN: Why I want to start a startup
I hate when people think that life is some kind of philosophy debate over "what should i do?", just fucking live and do whatever your heart tells you to.

I doubt your stupid steve jobs after getting fired from apple and having a spare billion(or even more?) and being 30 did it because of the money, or for approval... or anything. He did it because what he felt about his creations was bigger and stronger than himself.

Maybe you shouldn't start a startup but be a teacher in CS, maybe marry a beautiful woman or even be a serial killer... I don't know? But follow your heart and you won't need to write a wall of text to prove yourself to HN.
