thiago_fm··on Ask HN: Are you negatively affected by the recent economic stagnation?
If nicbou the builder is having a hard time, that's all the economic downturn data point I need.

I share a similar sentiment about Germany. I mean, we do have a recession for a couple of years already.

As a Software Developer, I've experienced layoffs of International companies just nuking their German team, for both cost and law risks (from people trying to create a worker council and the like).

I'm still employed because of my YOE, my skills & a wide network of people that have seen the quality of my work, but I see even previous CTOs and great engineers without a job.

Maybe in the years ahead, I might need to work doing something else.

I've always wanted to go to trade school and run my own business anyways, just didn't due to software engineering being so fun, interesting, challenging and ofc, well-paid.

I've been practicing my German a lot (C1+), so in worst case scenario I can do other work, maybe become an electrician or something that involves moving atoms, rather than bits.

thiago_fm··on DIY Soft Drinks
You can buy mate tea as tea sachets, "Mate leão" has a nice taste blend.

Why not do it with the leaves? This is harder as their taste profile is very uneven.

For the sour taste, add citric acid.

I'm pretty sure that if you toy around with the amount of citric acid, sugar & dillution you'll get a similar taste, or something even more palatable for you.

thiago_fm··on DIY Soft Drinks
You should get your website up and running and start writing and tell others not only how you made it, but also why. What you felt in this change in your life etc.

I guess a big part of this is figuring out how to make money doing that. I wonder how did you get there.

I've always had the desire to make soft drinks and I have a similar concern about how we are sitting the entire day...

thiago_fm··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
Incredible.

Hey Americans,

Please just make sure when you let an AI decide to explode your own country and ruin your society, you leave the rest of the world intact, thanks

thiago_fm··on Anthropic banned Pi, a third party harness
They mentioned before that they'd discontinue using your subscription in third party harness, as they are obviously subsiding your usage.

You can always pay for Anthropic models through the API usage. That still works... but I wonder if anybody will want to pay that much.

You'd probably go with a different model or API provider if you have to pay those costs yourself.

thiago_fm··on How to get better at guitar
Love Justinguitar, but I disagree with this approach, this tells you very little how to actually play the guitar, just to know songs and train your ear and transcribing. The main takeway here is that to become an artist you need to get good at copying.

Everybody that plays guitar have tried to transcribe a riff or a song. But not all have become great guitar players.

The way to go is to have an objective. Is it playing a difficult song like Cliffs of Dover? Playing blues? Rock? What is it? Focus on that style or song. COPY. Become a copy machine.

One example is doing bends. There are many ways of doing a bend. Most if not all blue players do it by holding the neck of the guitar in a very specific manner, so if you want to play blues, you need to copy them. It must be a perfect copy.

Playing the guitar is mostly a physical activity where motions and understanding of the body, and how this is wired into your nerves and brain matters.

If you just transcribe and play riffs, you won't be able to play in a high BPM, because in order to do that, you need to be extremely efficient with your movements, understand speed picking... and people have studied and developed those techniques for many years -- you don't invent this over, you watch videos, practice and copy it!

By just playing and transcribing you'll develop terrible habits which at some point will limit your playing, and will feel like it will take an eternity to correct. That's when most of the people stop playing.

And of course, play songs that are at your level, so typically lower speed songs with simpler chords and then from there understand what music style you want to focus on.

A guitar teacher can help you with that because they can easily come up with exercises and songs that would match your skill, but if you want, you can do that yourself.

Once you become advanced in guitar, then you'll for sure know it, and then you can experiment to do bends in a different way, or do something that would make you stand out, but at first, it's mostly about copying. Later you can innovate.

TLDR: best way of learning guitar is focusing on copying everything, the motions of a player being the #1.

thiago_fm··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
It is very, of course, if you compare it to Tesla, anything can look good.

But if you compare to other companies with similar rev/profit numbers, you'll be amazed with how cheap they are.

I don't believe Oracle has a wide moat other than its DB -- the Datacenters are mostly commodity.

thiago_fm··on GPT 5.4 in practice – Stinks?
Try OpenCode or Kimi, they're mostly all the same thing

We still have to see what Anthropic has cooked though

thiago_fm··on Claude Code limits are starting to feel like a psychological trick
Check the Claude Code reddit. You aren't alone, people have been mass-canceling for the past weeks for the same reason.

It's a good opportunity for people to try kimi and others, and now that soon we will have an agentic harness similar to Claude Code as its getting rewritten to Rust... I guess let's look elsewhere?

My guess is that Anthropic is focusing on enterprise as it gets ready for an IPO, leaving behind solo devs.

I find it very unlikely for this to change, unless they get even more datacenters and capacity to address how much demand they've got recently.

thiago_fm··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
It's still a company worth $400B that makes $3B of profits and not even $20B of revenue.

And full of debt from AI datacenters full of hardware with a 6 year depreciation cycle, possibly even lower depending on what NVidia releases next.

So overvalued!

thiago_fm··on Tell HN: Slow Down
We can't slow down.

Executives want to see numbers go up, even if it's a vanity metric like LOC or PRs merged.

It feels we're mostly building liabilities, rather than assets.

Management will later grind us to fix it all, as this will trigger a huge crisis as nothing works anymore, and we will have to do it and pretend they didn't create the problems themselves, so we keep our jobs, in the most optimistic scenario.

Companies with good tech leadership will thrive in that environment, but they are so few...

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: Got cancer, a new job,new boss in less than a year What do I do now?
Just focus on getting healthy again. You have a very challenging road ahead of you, and it's only about your health.

Money, job and responsibilities can wait.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: How are people forecasting AI API costs for agent workflows?
What you suggested is the best way in my opinion, but given what OP asked, I gave my answer.
thiago_fm··on Meta Platforms: Lobbying, dark money, and the App Store Accountability Act
America will just get behind even more as years pass behind Europe in terms of proper regulation of the digital economy, which benefits citizens instead of companies and rich billionaries.

The reason is that europeans have nothing to win from those "winner-take-all" platforms the US has built in the past decades. Europe has built zero of them.

It contributes very little to Europe's GDP or the overall being of the european. And in some cases, it eats Europe's GDP, moving economic activity back to the US. This is different than for Americans which big tech is a net-positive contributor to society in my POV, mainly because how much economic activity $ it generates.

Big techs provide huge paychecks and made a lot of people rich in the US, and most of its GDP growth in the last decade. But it's a double-edged sword.

They will make laws in favor of them in detriment of the average American, while minting more billionaries than Europe could ever dream of.

Europe will take a long time to get the digital revolution the US already did, but it'll mostly come from regulations and government initiatives. And will be net-positive for humans living in Euope, not for owners of corporations.

thiago_fm··on Returning to Rails in 2026
Same. Also became a .net developer after almost 20 years of Ruby/Rails.

Nowadays C# is anyways much more expressive than before. Meanwhile Ruby is still very slow.

Not to mention how poorly maintained are most Rails projects. People have been "vibe coding" forever.

A well-organized and maintained Rails app is great though. I'd definitely consider working with it again, but it really depends on what company it is.

thiago_fm··on Whistleblower claims ex-DOGE member says he took Social Security data to new job
Americans are about to find out why data protection laws exist in the EU, and why even the government has to follow it.

Nobody should have permission to query 70M Americans, it's a huge security flaw for the average citizen. But Pentagon has been doing this for a while a la Snowden, and the average american doesn't seem to be worried. With Snowden becoming a menace rather than a hero.

Once private government data from Americans starts being heavily used to mess up elections, or even worse, persecute people with a different opinion than the ruling party...

Americans will finally wake up that GDPR doesn't stiffle innovation, but rather protect its citizens from an evil actors.

But it may be too late, like when NSDAP started chasing jews and migrants. There was nothing they could do other than to flee to survive.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: How are people forecasting AI API costs for agent workflows?
That isn't true, if you run local models you'll also need to have to spend on operations.

Maybe focus first on providing value and later you can optimize this setup.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: How are people forecasting AI API costs for agent workflows?
Just add very hard high limits and add instrumentation so you can track it and re-evaluate it accordingly.

This takes a couple of hours maximum at best.

thiago_fm··on FFmpeg at Meta: Media Processing at Scale

thiago_fm··on Segagaga Has Been Translated into English
The reason the PS2 was successful it was because it was very easy to unblock it and use pirated games.

The Dreamcast wasn't as easy as I can remember.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
Hi dude, sorry about this. Hope it is for the better.

What you are feeling is absolutely natural. If you lost somebody in your life(parents, grandparents), which you shared a lot of time with and enjoyed sharing your upsides and downsides, you'll feel like somebody took a part of you.

Whether that person was good for you or not, we have chemicals in our brains that want us to have friends and company, as this is what made our species be so successful! So, no need to overthink this, your brain is working exactly as it should.

As you like playing games, I'd recommend getting a copy of WoW Midnight, which just launched and giving it a try. It's a very sociable game and your first goal should be to get in a guild and find new friendships.

As everybody is 30+ in the game and actually average around your age, it'll be easy for you to find similar people to you.

My second recommendation is to look at your own interests, even stuff you left behind because of your partner.

For instance, I like climbing and even going bouldering solo might mean I'll make some friends along the way.

You need to do things that get you together with people. People will help you get healed.

Also if the climate allows take your dog for a walk to the park and try to consistently spend time there. This will net you company very quickly, but don't go so fast, let things take time.

I hope you find peace in your heart!

thiago_fm··on Terence Tao, at 8 years old (1984) [pdf]
He was a prodigy, but I believe the average American would be surprised that almost all classes in China have a person like him, or even more. Raw IQ, analytical and rational minds are common there.

His biggest talent though, I believe it's something more rare. He can get people excited about mathematics, make people dream and imagine.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: Any AI / Agent power users out there? Do you have any tips?
The people on your network are BS'ing about it.

I do use all those tools, since from the very beginning when ChatGPT even wasn't widely available.

If you are automating something that isn't high impact or important, sure just let it write the code and don't even verify it.

But in a big org, you'll need to validate it on every step, every generated line of code can have bugs, injections and negative side-effects.

I believe you'll be more productive by using it, and prompting well, but you'll need to invest much more time on double-checking if everything is working accordingly to what you initially planned, or you might ship very broken code in production that can be difficult to revert, at a times.

2x productivity is possible, but it really depends on the kind of tasks you get. If your entire job is prototyping stuff, sure you are now 100x+.

But if you need to write very complex business logic that will last for years, with lots of back and forth and discussions with PMs and whatnot, which is the majority of SWE corporate jobs... my bet you'd be at maximum 1.5x!

thiago_fm··on Apple is fighting for TSMC capacity as Nvidia takes center stage
Yes and no. Sunk cost.

They are always balls deep, if it takes them 2 years to get a TSMC yield, with as much as demand it exists for high-end fabs, they could already easily get financing to already build even more capacity.

Now they have literally the US government as an investor.

One would be naive to believe that they wouldn't get at least a few hundred billion dollars to scale it up given the so many risks involved in most of US tech sector being dependent on Taiwan.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: Estimating % of dev using coding assistants
The 'bleeding-edge' of Software Engineering nowadays is:

Use Cursor for business rules and things that are a bit more complex and you need to be engaged, iterating by talking with AI.

Claude Code or agents for work that can be completely delegated.

Using Copilot and pasting is a very outdated way of working. I'm sure with the method above you would be working at least 2x output in the worst case scenario (when you need to iterate a lot using Cursor).

Of course, a good amount of time now is spent reviewing code, doing requirements and other things that are very time consuming, which the AI currently sucks at doing.

I've tried many code review bots but they are mostly useless, but I bet this will be the next thing that AI will greatly improve. It's almost usable now.

thiago_fm··on Ask HN: Cheaper Datadog anyone?
Signoz (invested by YC) is the cheaper alternative. They use OpenTelemetry and seems to work for basic scenarios well.

Of course, it doesn't have the 293428492 features that Datadog has, but works well enough for the main APM use-case

thiago_fm··on Tell HN: Get a dying iPhone 12 mini in 2026
You aren't saving the planet by purchasing a product from Apple. They are the kings of planned obsolescence and also have release cycles and marketing to make their customers over-consume.

Marketing that seems to have worked with you. I'm wondering if you even did any research at all.

Instead of using a garbage phone from Apple, go with better alternatives that are made to last, can be fixed, is more environmental safe, can be fixed etc.

thiago_fm··on Pokémon Team Optimization
That's where I disagree as well, the non-legendary non-multi-starter is also a crappy team as Pokémon isn't a rock paper scissor game since a long time.

You'd need to take into account innate abilities, how to also understand the impact of HP/ATK/etc in each Pokémon.

Snorlax for example is quite good, as it's pretty tanky and have a good moveset that can help it set it up.

Dragonite has multiscale, stuff that doesn't show up in by just looking at Pokémon types and stats.

Again, my main point was... analysis could be much more interesting if it analyzed battle data, rather than a very shallow assumption that a combination of Pokémon types and stats can win a battle.

thiago_fm··on Pokémon Team Optimization
Meanwhile I like the optimization analysis, the initial assumptions are very wrong. I know the author mentioned that they are optimizing for stats + being resistant to other Pokémon types, but that analysis will lead to very bad results.

There are Pokémon with certain abilities or tricks that makes it much better than legendary ones, with certain move sequences that could wipe the entire other team.

There are also Pokémon with certain types that are actually good against what the 'data' would say otherwise.

Maybe the analysis could be better done if you instead analyzed matches data.

BTW, the way people pay Pokémon since many years is to also divide the Pokémon into tiers and in a competitive setting, you are only allowed to pick Pokémon from the same tier or lower. This adds another level of complexity.

thiago_fm··on Our "enterprise" experience with Stripe after $1B+ processed (be careful)
With that much revenue, maybe it's time to look into your ratios of payment processing method being used.

For example, if 90% use Credit card, go with a simpler and cheaper payment provider and implement a mechanism that switches between them based on some frontend configuration.

I've worked for a company that they've essentially done that.

I know you might then need to handle having two places where you have invoices etc, but for the amount you are transactioning, it might be the right way to go.

This isn't important only to reduce how much you pay, but your lock-in and dependency on them, otherwise you have no leverage on those negotiations.

Your pain, their profit!
