thg··on Germany opposes EU plans for client-side scanning
> Germany has a historic responsibility (after two totalitarian regimes that spied on its cities in its past), which thankfully means a substantial part of the population was educated in school enough about the dangers that they would not support any party who let that kind of nonsense creep in, probably even regardless of which party is in power.

I wish it were so, but alas no. We have strong historic privacy laws, data protection authorities with teeth and a working court system constantly overturning new anti-privacy laws. Most of us Germans simply do neither care about privacy nor understand why "it all has to be so hard". The parties most people here vote for are also the parties that constantly enact laws eroding our privacy, only to then have them overturned by the courts. If not for those safeguards, Germany would again be on its best way on turning into an authoritarian police state again.

The only reason Germany is opposing this right now is that we currently have both the Liberals and the Greens in the government coalition. The Social Democrats (SPD) would have just winked it through and the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) would have fiercely supported it.

thg··on Ask HN: Are people still using Pascal?
We almost exclusively use Lazarus/FPC at work. Most of our software is PC applications for controlling / communicating with industrial machinery (CIJ printers, cable cutters, ..), so we don't need the latest & greatest stuff.. I'll be glad for the day when I never have to fiddle around with RS232/485 again..
thg··on German defence minister Christine Lambrecht quits after series of blunders
Here in Germany, yes. And it's not just the defense ministers, either. Whoever is going to replace her is unlikely to actually be better at the job, but if competence were an actual requirement, then I dare say at least 80% of our government would be out of a job.

Funny thing is, she actually did a better job than her predecessors. That should tell you all about how low that bar was to begin with.

Yeah, same as eth0up
thg··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors
Same goes for Up-/Downvoting on comments. I know because I've lost mine a couple years ago. ;)
thg··on Darktable 4.0
I'd additionally add Bruce Williams' "Understanding Darktable" series to that list: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlYWvzmJQTrRq7JrYdD7k...
thg··on Darktable 4.0
> current biggest grip with dt... why are those damn arrows at the edges of the screen so tiny??? Expanding and retracting the side panels requires pixel-perfect accuracy on a ~20px target. I know I could use keyboard shortcuts, but my brain isn't wired for them yet.

You can make them bigger through some CSS tweaks: https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/development/en/prefere...

thg··on 2022 Cloud Report
Don't forget ZEISS
thg··on Apple Shipped Me a 79-Pound iPhone Repair Kit to Fix a 1.1-Ounce Battery
I guess it's only bulkier because it's made up of several user-replaceable components.

The Fairphone 2 is a lot smaller and lighter than the FP3, though. My boss has a FP2 and my FP3 is really quite a monster compared to his.

Regarding buying one: Only us Europeans can actually do that since it's not available anywhere else.

thg··on Ex-eBay exec pleads guilty to harassing Ina and David Steiner

thg··on Understanding the bin, sbin, usr/bin, usr/sbin split (2010)
Windows is a 32 bit shell for a 16 bit extension to an 8 bit Operating System designed for a 4 bit microchip by a 2 bit company which can't stand one bit of competition.
thg··on Eve Online fans cheer Microsoft Excel features at annual Fanfest
Don't bother. EVE used to be absolutely great (community-wise, gameplay-wise the game always was more "lipstick on a pig"-like), but these days it's just a shadow of what it once was.

By continually dumbing the game down to "make it more accessible", the constant lying by the devs and them going back on their words and it more and more becoming a microtransaction hellhole, CCP managed to destroy the one single thing that made EVE successful: The community.

I greatly enjoyed the decade and a half I played it (beta until 2018'ish), but truth be told, it's only ever been going downhill pretty much since the Incarna expansion with 60$ monocles (2011).

CCP fucked their loyal player base over and over and over again until most of us simply didn't want to take it anymore. The playerbase these days mostly consists of bots and instant gratification people expecting everything on a silver platter, constantly whining if they don't get what they want, only to inevitably leave again after 3-6 months even if they do get what they want.

I remember my first decade in EVE with great fondness and made some terrific friends there. Regarding the 5 years that followed, I seriously regret not quitting sooner. I'm still somewhat active in the EVE forums, though. After all, that's where the real PvP happens. ;)

thg··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
It's about the same here in Germany.

Source: Got nurses in the family.

thg··on My NDA is expired. It's worse than you know, AMA
Regarding the first: https://www.ccpgames.com/

Regarding the second: Council of Stellar Management. It's a player-elected lobbying group to steer and give feedback on (some) development decisions. You can read more about it here: https://community.eveonline.com/community/csm/

thg··on Facebook threatens to leave Europe over privacy laws, regulators say ‘please do’
Facebook threatening us with a good time. Too bad they'll never go through with it.
thg··on Who's Attacking My Server?
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned ssh-audit yet, so here it is: https://pypi.org/project/ssh-audit/

It's useful for helping in hardening the SSH configuration and there is also a web version here: https://www.ssh-audit.com/

thg··on F-Droid – alternative to Google Play store
Using the anonymized login function, you're limited to free ones only. You have to login with your Google account to be able to download apps you've bought.

Although I think that doesn't work for all apps, since apparently some require the genuine thing to register / activate and won't work with microG. No personal experience, just read that somewhere once.

Personally, I only use a single paid app through Aurora Store (Sun Locator Pro for my photography needs) and have only done that for two days now. Google hasn't banned my mint fresh account. Yet. ;)

thg··on Germany commits €100B to defense spending
Poland comes to mind.. Don't know about the population, but their current government really does not like us.

Although they're geographically between Russia and us, so there's that.

thg··on An almost perfect rsync over SSH backup script
My go-to backup solution, that can also manage rsync over ssh (among plenty other things), is synbak[0]. Short wrapper script to automatically mount the backup medium and it's really simple to (automatically) run a backup job. I use encrypted (LUKS) USB drives for that at home. Highly recommend it.

For encrypted backups to e.g. a NAS, Duplicity[1] is my go-to choice (full backup every month or so, with incremental backup every day inbetween).

thg··on Host Firewalls (2020)
Have a look at OpenSnitch: https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch

Never used it myself, only remembering it from my thesis days about essentially the same topic. I see they made the jump away from Python to Go and I'm also somewhat surprised the project is not only still active, but appears to have matured nicely. Guess I'll have to check it out now!

Here's the initial HN discussion of OpenSnitch from 5 years ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14245270

thg··on Sony is buying Bungie, the developer of Destiny and original creator of Halo
The 2nd last FAQ explicitly states something different:

--

Q. Bungie has future games in development, will they now become PlayStation exclusives?

No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community.

--

Although I certainly won't take a wager on that still being true in 3-4 years.

thg··on The money printing press that is chip maker TSMC
> Intel could have gotten into higher-end GPUs

They're supposedly working on it with Xe-HPG DG2. But knowing Intel and their shenanigans, I'll believe it when I see independent coverage and benchmarks.

thg··on DSLRs are dead, and lenses are never going to be the same
That's maybe true for Sony shooters obsessed with their spec sheets, but bodies have usually been ageing fairly well for the past few years.

The Nikon D850, for example, has been out for over 4 years now and it's still among the best one can buy.

thg··on Germany shuts down half of its remaining nuclear plants
It's been around the 35% mark for at least a decade. We also import from Norway (~30%) and the Netherlands (~20%), along with about 6-8% from domestic sources and some imports from the United Kingdom.

The middle east is another potential supplier and Italy, for example, get their gas from Africa. Germany also has the biggest gas storage capacity in Europe and the gas tanks are usually filled quite well before winter (>95%). Not this year though, because the MBAs took a gamble on Nord Stream 2 going operational and lost the wager, resulting in soaring gas prices all across Europe.

You also need to keep in mind that natural gas is not solely used for heating homes, but also industrial processes and generating electricity, among others, which could be reduced or stopped if it really came down to it.

In short: Russia turning off the valves would be more of an inconvenience than the life-threatening situation it is often claimed to be. But personally I don't see that happening, as the Russians have been a very reliable supplier for decades.

thg··on Germany shuts down half of its remaining nuclear plants
Russian gas makes up only 1/3rd of Germany's total amount of imported gas and only because it's cheap. If the Russians really were to turn off the valve, the amount could be made up for with other sources. By far not instantly, but nobody would freeze to death, either.

Germany's alleged dependence on Russian gas is mostly a fairytale of US propaganda.

thg··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?
Shelter does the same thing, with the added bonus of both being FOSS and available on FDroid.

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.typeblog.shelter/

thg··on Is Microsoft Stealing People’s Bookmarks?
Nobody would go to prison over this. At most it'd be a fine and if the value gained is bigger than the fine they estimate they'll have to pay, they sure as hell would take that chance. Happens all the time. Even more so, since it's literally something (most) MBAs are being taught.
thg··on Why can DRM crash some games on 12th gen Intel core processors?
Apparently there was, and probably still is (process groups): https://www.anandtech.com/show/15483/amd-threadripper-3990x-...

And here's a table about hardware restrictions for Windows 10: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_editions#Comparison...

Looks like Windows 10 Pro is limited to 128 cores / threads per CPU. Guess I was a bit off with my "bazillion" remark above, but who with access to that kind of hardware would ever want to waste it on Windows anyway?

thg··on German government wants to support Tesla battery cell plant with 1.14B euros
Of course they do.. I sincerely hope the CDU* doesn't get that through before the election and that they also end up in the opposition and never get to "govern" again.

*The C stands for Christianity, but it might just as well stand for Corruption. Would be a lot more accurate too.
