There's nothing wrong with using a franchise. The characters are memorable, and perhaps even people really like them. As long as they are putting the characters into new worlds/levels it's all that matters.
Yes, Nintendo is notorious for re-releasing their older games, but it's not like the other companies don't do the same thing either.
Just look at the re-release of Combat Evolved, or SquareEnixs constant re-release of their older Final Fantasy games (with cheesy 3D added to them)
Edit: Don't know how to use HN markdown or something.
I knew immediately by reading the domain that it was going to be a feminist leaning blog, and that's totally fine. Perhaps that's what their content is based on. Unfortunately there's lots of examples of men being jerks, so they have a massive grab bag to pull content from.
> If you don't like it leave
That's always the easy answer, and it's unrealistic and unfair. You don't know the conditions of the author. Maybe they have a boatload of debt or are in a situation where they need stability. Moving jobs is always a risk because there are things like probation periods. Even if you are good at what you do, a probation period is still scary, even more so if you have dependents.
Every generation thinks that. It's nothing new really.
Also if the author wanted he could simply add in some cheap d10s that each player could use to keep track of their current planet values.
From what the panelists were saying, the closest thing to 3D printing could be useful for would be to use a high resolution printer to create a few masters from which you could create your moulds instead.
Also the fact that Mr. Haines is always promoting improving ones craft by writing code makes his comments even worse.
I feel that this comment on being a dick by jbrennan to be pretty decent:
"Next time you feel like mocking another developer for his or her lack of skills in a certain area, stop yourself. Talk to the person and explain to them why you think something they are doing is incorrect or how it could be done better. This way, you don’t come off as a jerk, and the other developer learns something new and improves. And I’d be surprised if you didn’t learn something from the experience, too."
Open source builds up that portfolio everyone wants to see, and working on a project provides mentors to help give new developers guidance.
The design is nice though.
> Off-Topic: If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.
I recall seeing a top voted article about a somewhat recently deceased CEO on the front page. I'd hardly consider that On-Topic according to that sentence.
Just like a real democracy, just because you don't agree with popular opinion doesn't invalidate it.
You still have to give it to Notch for showing that you can make an extremely entertaining game while not pushing any hardcore boundaries, such as graphics. Perhaps this will inspire more people to get into software development.
Doesn't sound good for authors or readers.
With a physical book the only hoop I have to jump through is meeting up with them and giving them the book. I've done this a number of times through university with textbooks and it saved me and several colleagues hundreds of dollars.
