theyregreat··on Facebook must kill its news feed. Democracy depends on it
There’s no simple, panacea, technical solution to prevailing ignorance. Granted people can have their sentiment adjusted by captological factors, but people need to dig into issues, do credible research, learn about history and cultivate better BS detectors. Lazy, passive, clueless wallflowers do not a healthy society make.
theyregreat··on They thought they were going to rehab. They ended up in chicken plants
Undocumented migrants are treated just about the same at the five mega-processing plants. Amputations without access to workers’ comp. are common.

and whatever inspector we would have to deal with and we should leave an envelope with a certain amount of cash, and he told us what the cash amount should be for each inspector. And how to do it all!

Bill: He was one of those guys, after you shake his hand, you want to go wash.

China also affects Hollywood movies whom self-censor in order to not offend Chinese censors.
theyregreat··on Building and using a 29-year-old compiler on a modern system
To build a particular working GCC, dependencies (binutils, MPC, MPFR and GMP (and sometimes ISL)) need to be within a particular range, preferrably within the same time era. Also note that old compilers will often contain unpatched security vulnerabilities.
theyregreat··on UK government calls out Whatsapp for enabling criminals to communicate in secret
That’s incorrect. There are over 5000 Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO’s) in the UK.

Alexa is a stool pigeon.

Bitsquatting, rowhammer and silent corruption. Basically, ECC should be the universal standard in all network gear, servers and endpoint (user) devices. Not creates an attack surface and opportunity for data-loss.

theyregreat··on Integrated Terminal Performance Improvements
Are there any macOS terminals like iTerm but with performance and resource efficiency as the top goals?
theyregreat··on How to Legally Own Another Person (2015) [pdf]
Combine H1B with debt like for cars, education, housing, etc., and that’s full-on indentured servitude. People under such duress maybe convinced to work for $30/hr or less.
theyregreat··on Another Flip in the Wall of Rowhammer Defenses
(SECDED.) RH and bitsquatting are two reasons ECC should be the standard, not the exception, in all manner of consumer endpoints, network gear and servers.
theyregreat··on Unselfish People Are More Likely to Wind Up with Depression
“Selfish” conflates two simultaneously-weighted perceptions “this person should give me more” and rational self-interest / getting or not getting a better “deal.”

Likewise, “unselfish” conflates two simultaneously-weighted perceptions virtue-signaling (appearance of giving) and genuine caring about individuals and people (substance of effective helping).

Another issue is that culturally, some people resent each other when there is difference in default attitude: selfish vs. unselfish. It may seem racist but I’ve observed an underlying tension between Arabs and Israelis arise from this difference in outlook in individual relationships.

theyregreat··on “Use of open source software has been declining rapidly in the private sector”
Every large org project I’ve seen fail does so for three large categories of reasons: under-management (delegating too much authority, project management and lack of accountability over to vendors), vague requirements (ie vendor becomes more hesistant, less certain what to build and moves in tangents to meet expectations) or too long of a feedback cycle (ie BDU).

Then pay contractors to blow torch rip-replace the tip of the screwdrivers after each screw turned. See also: scrap-heap piles of new engines and wheel rims left in Afghanistan that were billed to the US military, the metal of which was sold cheap by local scrap merchants to make weapons for the Taliban in Pakistan.
theyregreat··on Equifax Breach Caused by Lone Employee’s Error, Former CEO Says
Damn right. Security forensics should operate more like the NTSB. There are policy, cultural, process, organizational, team and more factors to consider in the totality of MECE-like structured forensics with hopefully a report and recommendations at the end. Political or timid audits aren’t useful in correcting deficiencies wherever they may exist if they jump to a narrow conclusion too quickly.

theyregreat··on Ask HN: Which laptop for development?
That Louis Rossman guy does component level repair and you might be able to squeeze some coin out of repairing and selling it. I’m considering just gifting an 2010 water-damaged MBP 13 as support for his great content.

Lenovo’s are sturdy as heck too. That, standard upgradable parts and the industry best keyboard make them the most practical for both coding and corporate work. She may not be the prettiest date, but she has a great personality and is amazing at her vocation.

theyregreat··on Ask HN: Which laptop for development?
The cheapish $999/$1099 mid-2012 A1278 4 GiB 500 GB HDD 13” MBP non-Retina can do 16 GiB and two 2.5” SSDs if the vestigal optical drive is removed and replaced with an adapter. Mine even run with TRIM just fine.
theyregreat··on Ask HN: Which laptop for development?
Soon to be former Apple (13” MBP A1278 16 GiB 2x2 TiB SSDs) owner here:

Lenovo X270

- 20-ish hour battery life

- Awesome water-resistant keyboard. Did I mention it’s one of the best laptop keyboards IMHO?

- Lightweight

- Portable size for train, plane, automobile use

- Choice of displays

- Kensington lock port, headphone jack, USBs and SD card slot

Do not buy an Apple any longer: unrepairable, $750 LB repairs, glued in batteries, soldered-in RAM and SSDs, unupgradeable and new terrible, feedbackless keyboards. Watch Louis Rossmann’s channel if you need any more convincing that Apple’s are often overpriced money-pits.

theyregreat··on The Gun Lobby Is Down to Its Last, Unconvincing Excuse
Depending on the state, getting a Destructive Device tax stamp and local law enforcement approval, Americans can currently privately own fully-functional, diesel-powered traverse, towed, anti-aircraft 40 mm auto-cannons if they were made before some treaty (I can’t remember which one). They’re several hundred thousand dollars and the shells are hundreds of dollars each. That’s right: moderately rich people can own their very own artillery in some states like Arizona.

If you want excellence, demand the unreasonable.
theyregreat··on Tesla Misses Model 3 Production Goals
If it weren’t sarcasm, Poe’s law would be invoked. Sometimes even Godwin’s law on really interesting days.
theyregreat··on Tesla Misses Model 3 Production Goals
It’s more likely a confluence of supplier/s, retooling and new hire temporary chaos.
theyregreat··on Tesla Misses Model 3 Production Goals
It sounds like “kitchen chaos” startup mode while their “TPMS” workflow, tooling, fixtures and techinques get figured out for higher capacity, routine production. Unionizing is important because people shouldn’t be treated like animals and should make a living wage.
theyregreat··on Rage Disorder Linked with Toxoplasmosis (2016)
If it makes rats sexually attracted to cats, it may not be such a trivial disease.
theyregreat··on San Francisco, now with more dystopia
The root of the US problem: it’s turning into a poor country because the vast majority of the greedy rich people hoarding trillions, that used to go to middle class as wages and to general government funds, and their corrupt politicians enabling this vicious cycle.

Social welfare and mental healthcare exist so people aren’t crawling on the street. Every living person needs a basic level of respect, care and dignity... if the can’t provide for themselves, falling through the cracks is not a solution but a source of many more, more expensive and worse, problems. So socialism for the rich and nothing for the poor isn’t sustainable and people will eventually go “French Revolution.” A stable democratic country has to balance competing tyrannies: rich vs. middle vs. poor, country vs. city and community vs. individual.

theyregreat··on San Francisco, now with more dystopia
Life isn’t a movie: there are no mandatory self-fulfilling prophecies and learned helplessness is optional. Also, you can break by the bystander effect by actually doing something. Most people just pretend homeless people don’t exist, don’t deserve to be treated like people and shouldn’t be helped. Be different.
