theyregreat··on Facebook Is Looking for Employees with National Security Clearances
National Security Clearance is like saying Congressional Medal of Honor: both italicized words are superfluous.
theyregreat··on Malta car bomb kills Panama Papers journalist
That makes at least 28 journalists murdered this year that we know about. Others are likely disappeared or not popular enough to get news items.

EDIT: I already sent CPJ an anonymous message mentioning the list sadly needs updating as it’s currently at 27. :’(

$8 for a beer in a lot of places these days, $15+ for a cocktail. Another reason the bar scene in expensive cities is pointless. In small towns, a beer can be as cheap as $2 or free if the beverage vendor rep is passing out samples (ie whole bottles of beer).

Big-box stores for beer by the case and make your own beer.

theyregreat··on The Depression Thing
I have nearly life-long chronic major depression that can’t be cured with socialization, sex, money, sleep, diet, exercise or various forms of therapy. I’ll take a random stab that it is mostly genetic and partly by having had a tyrannical, histrionic, screaming father whom caused frequent stress: this then setup poor vagal tone and “walking-on-egg-shells” hyper-vigilance which then neuroplasticized towards reinforcing pain-depression complex of the military-industrial kind.

I now have depression again after mirtazapine tachyphylaxis. It’s a widely-hitting NaSSA and powerful antihistamine (which also means hypnotic). It’s also the most effective antidepressant (I was on a heavy dose, 60 mg) but it causes weight gain (+25% body mass) and G.I. slow-down. That’s great when it works, but now I’m letting the old black dog have another ride as buproprion XL 300 mg isn’t doing anything useful so far. Maybe, still really foggy, confused and increased pain perception.

Not being depressed is awesome: like the clouds parted, quieted inward observation, less reading, less writing, less sleeping-in, pain set aside, more energy, enjoyment and orderly thinking; almost manic but, presumably, not bet-kid’s-education-fund-on-18 far.

Looking at next alternatives:

* Bupropion XL 450mg

* AXS-05 (60 mg DM with bupropion)

* Venlafaxine ER

* Venlafaxine ER + Lamotrigine

* Venlafaxine ER + Mirtazapine

PS: Paxil gave me serotonin syndrome and Zoloft did jack shit.

theyregreat··on Trump’s Tough Talk on NAFTA Suggests Pact’s Demise Is Imminent
The crybully is similar but he rotates through all three phases of the Karpman Drama Triangle often in order to play hero. My hypothesis is many sociopathic leaders of different stripes use/d similar tactics to hit people’s emotions and bypass their rationality. It is what it is, and many people are seduced when times seem rough that someone has a panacea or a plan to make everything better. I wish people focused more on manipulating him into doing what actually needs to happen and less on useless demonizing or lionizing. Polarization is gonna kill more people by not tackling huge problems like locked-in climate change... the world needs CDR, solar shade or whatever scales as fast as possible, “moon-mission”-style.

Facial-recognition-book perhaps or they correlated her time, IP, cookies and/or location (Skyhook (WiFi), GPS, etc.) from inadequate opsec. Infrasound pinging would be a bit much, but not completely crazy as yet another trangulation method among many.

If someone’s gonna maintain two ID’s they gotta use consistently perfect opsec or game over: a known-good VPN or jumpbox in a non-treaty country (paid in cash or bitcoin from a throwaway wallet), separate devices (burners with no real info, different carriers, purchased in cash, all location settings off, cameras removed, microphones disabled until needed, kept in the microwave when not in use), different language quirks in chat and hide their face in all photos on the sketchy ID. And no voice audio uploads or direct photo uploads without scrubbing image metadata.

There might be other possible uniquely-identifying information leaks usable by deep-learning against device activity granted to apps: mouse, keyboard, screen, app switching, gestures, etc.

Filter on the benchmarks and then dig into ownership and reputation. Bigger vendors have more to lose and more resources to fight legal and cybersecurity issues. Too big / multinational vendors then get leaned-on by national security services with an “include this and give us customer information or we blacklist you” offer.

Secure Secure Shell guide is a good security baseline, including generating long enough moduli and using EC. https://stribika.github.io/2015/01/04/secure-secure-shell.ht...

Use 4096 for personal email or anything important. Other uses maybe fine with 2048. Slighly overkill is better than insufficiently expensive ASIC pwned.

Awesome news. Also, instead of ssh private keys, I use monkeysphere which stores them in gpg instead. With git and ssh scripts, it’s easy to make it automatically ask for your psssphrase on first use.

theyregreat··on A Refugee in Puerto Rico, 1942: Claude Lévi-Strauss and the Burden of Archives
I get the not wanting to be sentimental (I did get rid of nearly everything I owned once) but there’s a modicum of things people may want to keep and may regret not keeping: things related to family ancestry, pivotal life events come to mind.

More generally: I still don’t fathom the populist, knee-jerk, sweeping generalizations of castigating and demonizing immigrants and refugees whom the Western countries created, and that often they themselves were once also. If a country becomes predominantly xenophobic, like say China or Japan were long ago, they fall into backwards ways: socially, politically, economically and technologically. It shouldn’t be a political or partisan animosity issue that should be argued over or not discussed at all via the isolation of separation political universes, but a strength of values, integrity, community and collaboration with those whom may build future gigabusinesses elsewhere. Self-interest would welcome intellectuals, engineers, entrepreneurs and others with open arms and facilitate their integration as fast as they would like. Immigration is a form of customer service that signals values and qualities of the country... is our or your OOBE good?

theyregreat··on Adafruit acquires RadioShack?
XD It wasn’t called RatShack for nothing. ;)
theyregreat··on Adafruit acquires RadioShack?
Tandy used to be the housebrand name of almost IBM compatible RS computers.
theyregreat··on Adafruit acquires RadioShack?
Yup. It’s probably a licensing deal with the conservator or some such to give a little coin back to investors/debt-holders. The remaining B&M I’ve encountered basically just sell mobiles, junk like toys, accessories and cables. Maybe a handful of discrete passive components, if you’re lucky.

Heck, in the valley, IRL fulfillment (willcall)/retail of electronic components is limited: (Halted isn’t organized and sells mostly used stuff without ESD management anywhere, Fry’s is a joke). Maybe you can will-call some places (Jameco), but the main sources like FleaBay and DigiKey don’t compare to IRL/right-now like Shenzhen highrise of everything bad fakes, good fakes and authentic. If you’re prototyping and about to do small runs it’s much easier in China because suppliers of all sizes and contract manufacturers right there, and can turn-around PCBs in a couple of hours. America doesn’t have anything remotely close to the density and rapid business efficiency of Shenzhen.

theyregreat··on Adafruit acquires RadioShack?
Daayam. That’s awesome! Hopefully they rename it RatShack and sell actual radios and kits through what’s left of it. Also, it would be cool if there were IoT, electronics, μctrlr interfacing kit subscriptions for academic-level learning through practical kits on a monthly basis.

Adafruit is an awesome, modern business model (juxtaposed to the tiny margins of components and other commodification) that pumps out tons of quality kits, and Fried is killing it! I see tons of new product demos all the time on their YouTube channel.[0]

theyregreat··on Security.txt
Yup. They often claim you’re “malicious” to cover their incompetent butts. This is why reporting should be:

- end-to-end encrypted with a brand new, limited-time GPG key

- use a disposable email service

- make up an alias

- send from public WiFi at a coffeeshop some distance away that doesn’t have corporate CCTV

- Don’t bother with Tor or a VPN because it advertises “suspicious behavior” across network hops that maybe/are monitored/logged

If you volunteer information about your identity, it can be easily misused to attack you in a myriad of legal, professional, social media and other dirty-tricks ways.

theyregreat··on Security.txt
Also, a lot of companies/orgs deny vulnerabilities exist or even “shoot the messenger.” Reporting is often an inconsistent, chaotic gamble, which pushes more people to either not report the issue, give up or go black hat to monetize their findings.
theyregreat··on Return to the Source
SRE consultant here.

I was dissatisfied with Linux and FreeBSD, seL4 seems much more robust, in terms of system reliability and security. (seL4 is not an OS, but a framework to build an OS on top.)

Then I was dissatisfied with all the crap in the x86 ISA (bucket of modes, 4 rings, many deprecated features, insecure SMM and zillions of feature flags), the mostly failures of RISC and the over complexity of many versions and variants of ARM (but it’s nice that it’s available as IP).

It seems there ought to be an architecture that can make writing OSes easier and more secure:

- handle task/context switching much faster than x86

- IPC (zero-copy both register and page borrowing, maybe copy if source page is locked or if async.) This enables L4-fast CSP in the ISA.

- resource limits / counters

- memory page allocation

- capabilities management

- transparent page compression and encryption

- OS bookkeeping (kernel-specified privileged data: per task/core/etc.)

in addition to the usual suspects (MMU, FPU, SIMD, etc.):

- virtual memory

- paging (including possible unprivileged page-fault handler)

- hypervisor (VM lifecycle)

- interrupts / faults / exceptions

- TLB

- tiers of caches / cache coherency protocol

- memory controller

- standard I/O controllers

- clock throttling w/ spread-spectrum and thermal management

- micropower standby

- JTAG

- at least one system-wide atomic operation (compare&swap or ainc/adec)

much more rigidly, faster and less clunkily that most OS gunk tends to be. Not CISC overload, but healthy facilitation of fast AND secure OS and user-mode program constructs that are batteries-included.

Also, SystemVerilog looks doable (I’m reading the whole IEEE spec for SV2012) and there’s always MOSIS should a Kickstarter be in order to make actual ASIC dev kits. EDA looks manageable but there’s a definite learning curve to testing, verification, behavioral design, RTL and DRC.

Plus, opaque firmware blobs and chips aren’t conducive to trusting the end-to-end security of the supply chain of a finished product. End customers are almost praying that some fab hasn’t slipped in malicious microcode or RTL changes or the parts stuffers didn’t insert a backdoor into unsecured firmware.

theyregreat··on The Logic of Risk Taking
Exactly. I take fish oil, eat a mostly plant-based diet, don’t smoke/drink but live comfortably in a van for cheap. Why? Survival is easy. All risks are not created equal, and following the heard may result in running off a cliff, ie debt, consumption-oriented, spendy, no love/children/friends, workaholism /not enjoying vacations/travel/life and worrying about the wrong things that don’t really matter.
theyregreat··on FBI Hunt for 2 Missing Pigs Reveals Federal Cover-Up of Barbaric Factory Farms
Wrong. It’s you who is rationalizing not living morally-consistently as yet another BS excuse. Most people are just too selfish, weak and exhibit too much cognitive dissonance to do anything but rationalize their unsustainable behavior because it costs them immediately nothing. In that case, meat needs to be heavily taxed like cigarettes and alcohol because too many people can’t or won’t give up something that is threatening the future of the planet, creates lakes of shit and is the opposite of humane. People treat their dogs and cats better than other feeling animals whom they don’t need to kill.

I suggest you watch videos on YouTube by the SHARK to see what’s really going on at CAFOs and other facilities.

The planet can’t take it (methane and CO2) and it directly causes “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” suffering and pain proportional to purchases.

I used to eat piles of meat but have not for about a decade because I became educated about the multifaceted reality of the climate, environmental, ecological and animal welfare aspects.

theyregreat··on Facebook must kill its news feed. Democracy depends on it
Magnifying gossip is the issue. It’s almost as if we need a few thousand people or AI with really good domain knowlege and common sense whom can somehow handle moderating the onslaught of conspiracy theories, rumors and general BS. Seems very difficult to scale on the tech side. We might be better off finding a path to building in-real life communities whom can educate each other and discuss such things civilly.
