thexumaker··on California Court Affirms Right to Treat Drivers as Contractors
yep that makes sense. Every job should be contractor status to maintain a flexible labor market. Tech market would've benefited greatly xD
thexumaker··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
yep I tried asking chatgpt to optimize some SQL queries with a heavy amount of full outer joins. The optimization I was trying to push it to was specifically adding an index on a column or filtering the first table that we join on but it kept creating SQL subqueries and switching the full joins to left joins no matter what I told it and the sql errors I sent it
thexumaker··on Instagram Is Disabling Its NFT Features
you don't own the scorpemon though. The second that original game shuts down or decides its not worth hosting that asset you have unique nft to nothing. It's up to the game maker to interpret whatever the hell your nft is worth hence it's not that different to ownership of a star. You can't just make up an imaginary decentralized world where people just make a scorpemon game and host it for free forever lmao. Someone is trying to make a profit.
thexumaker··on FDIC Establishes Signature Bridge Bank, N.A., As Successor to Signature Bank
Most high yield savings accounts are 3.8%+ with no downsides and CDs are 4%+. Discover, Wealthfront, ally, chase etc.
thexumaker··on Atlassian to shed 5 per cent of workers
Linear
thexumaker··on Atlassian to shed 5 per cent of workers
They’ve been a bit over bloated for a while and honestly too many better alternatives out there
thexumaker··on Creating a landing page using AI tools and no code
To that extent nothing is worthy of humans to do. Nothing we do is truly unique. It only seems unique because we have a poor understanding of it. Might as well not exist or eat or poop because that’s not worthy
thexumaker··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
thank god, the charging network outside of tesla's supercharger network is terrible. But last time I went on a roadtrip on a popular route up and down i-5 there weren't enough chargers. I can't imagine these supercharger networks getting any better unless they build 100 mile lots for charging
thexumaker··on Tell HN: DigitalOcean is doing layoffs
Cmon man literally every well known late stage startup, faang, and even small startups are doing layoffs like this. Your only employment options at this point if you stood to your morales are Apple, Verkada, and Levis’ Jeans

Not to mention when the money was flowing in half the talk and advice around the industry was take more money over the relationships you’ve built with your current org. Can’t have your cake and eat it too

thexumaker··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
They should’ve just maintained what they were doing and not follow in the footsteps of Tesla/Microsoft with their shit implementations
thexumaker··on Bing thinks Mars has 2.5B people based on an AI generated blog wrong answer
been calling out the AI grift ever since chatgpt launched their stuff. Which I mean chatgpt and the LLM's are really cool and it was fun to mess around with but who the hell thought that this should ever go into any sort of actual product other than language comprehension related products?

Whoever ok'd this crap at Microsoft to get that big promo really just highlights why I'm never using a Microsoft product from teams to bing to azure.

thexumaker··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
lmao as someone who spent a couple months at Walmart global tech, they may be the leaders in retail but they are not stealing Amazon customers. If anything Target, Wayfair, Best Buy, TJ Max etc are taking more market share.

Last time I shopped at Walmart, it was a mess and their e commerce is even worse, products come all beat up, 3rd party policies are a free for all atm, and the scams are even worse there

thexumaker··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
yep, we can also draw some interesting conclusions from the current conflict in Ukraine and that's with a targeted campaign an air defense is only as good as the entire network and system it's built around.

The Ukrainian air force with mostly su-24's and su-27's should not exist or even be able to operate against Russia's supposed air defense capabilities(s-400, s-300, Tor, manpads) but war is almost always a battle of information and the stealth and network capabilities the F-35 has puts it a league of its own. One which only the f-22 could transcend but the raw number of F-35's being pumped out negates that advantage to a degree

thexumaker··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
yea those speaking points about the F-35 not doing well in air superiority were mostly russian/chinese misinformation lol. The plane is no f-22 for sure but almost all 4th gen and even 4.5 gen planes would be long shot down before even getting in range for a dog fight.
thexumaker··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
ty for actually doing the math. Saying Amazon only hired warehouse workers as part of their headcount doubling was completely bs. Their new grad pipeline alone probably accounted for more than 5-10k hires during that period(Assuming ~20% corp_employees and ~780k new hires.
thexumaker··on Part II: The failure points from $5M to $100M in ARR
So 3/4 of the main points here are in regards to hiring the right people... Almost makes me wonder if hr teams/operations shouldn't be measured on just headcount but rather getting the right people in
thexumaker··on AI chatbots are not a replacement for search engines
Yep had the same realization a while back building something similar for our internal docs on notion for a hackathon. I realized that if notion just had a better search engine we wouldn’t need anything else built on top
thexumaker··on Mozilla acquires the team behind Pulse, an automated status updater for Slack
200k maybe with inflated RSU packages lol. 150k base is about the best you’re gonna get even with a masters.
thexumaker··on The Case for the F-35
Ah yea my bad su-37 not 57
thexumaker··on The Case for the F-35
Have people not been watching all the combat footage coming out of Ukraine? The future of combat isn’t in drones or unmanned aircraft even though Ukraine has been effective in the war with them. But end of the day war is about coordination and communication. Watching Ukrainian coordination between ground troops and artillery, or watching commanders use 1000 dollar commercial planes to watch a battlefield play out and redirect artillery has been such a stark difference in comparison to the Russians. air superiority is still somewhat in Russia’s favor and if they had a plane near even half of the f-35’s capabilities they would have a lot more success in taking out key Ukrainian weapons and command. Meanwhile they’re flying their su-57’s with unguided ordinances with no communication with ground or naval troops leading to disastrous results.
thexumaker··on Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List (2014) [pdf]
slightly unrelated, I've been experimenting with using Lob's mailing API to send in real life ddoss attacks of people's mail services. While this is really expensive, sending roughly 1 million letters/postcards in one batch will set you back ~500k, it will lead the USPS sending a pallet of mail onto the porch of someone you hate. Spread out the sends a bit and you get so many wads of mail that the USPS comes awfully close to just putting you on a do not mail list. Not getting election mail, medicine, important notices, package deliveries, getting marked as undeliverable on their address verification service etc it can become quite annoying.

It was the one feature I never got full buy in when working there, but if anyone has half a mil to spare, you can run some very fun experiments with mail.

thexumaker··on Twitter’s Entire A11y Experience Team Let Go
yep. Literally with so many people reneging, working multiple jobs, doing what's required of them, a company has no loyalty to their engineers. The opposite is also true, an engineer shouldn't have too much loyalty to their company. Considering these dudes were making over 200k a year I'm sure they'll be fine and land their next job.
thexumaker··on Bloated college administration is making education unaffordable
I will say there for sure is a certain percentage of administration at most public colleges that should be cut. Coming from the UC system, there are wayyyy too much bureaucratic bloat. But at the same time they do provide a lot of support even if it's for smaller niche groups of people on campus, which without them would make going there a much worse experience.

There should be a middle ground in reducing costs of overpaid bureaucratic bloat while also providing everyone on campus enough support, from undergrads to grad students to professors, etc.

The best solution here is just to start enforcing pip quotas lol.

thexumaker··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Is anyone actually looking to hire Twitter people? It was known as a rest and vest place with a bunch of leetcode engineers lmao.
thexumaker··on Brex layoffs
Man I joined an elixir team to start my engineering career and while I love the language, and it isn’t too hard to pickup and read until you have to start mocking stuff and all the &’s start popping up. But still the pipelines and functional approach was solid.

The problem was actually getting the stuff deployed or running into weird niche issues that require a couple days to fix. I was a bit out of comfort level at that point but the exaws sdk’s, confex, releases, supervisors. Made me really appreciate how much more support and just easier mode/python has been in my current job.

thexumaker··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
Reading through the comments on this thread, it feels like 3/4 of the people on here decided to not read through at least 52 pages of the 72 page report chess.com released lmao
thexumaker··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
did you even read the chess.com report?

> In fact, Magnus has only played 4.g3 twice previously (both before 2010), and the position after Hans castled on move four had never been seen in any of Magnus’ games. Hans in a later interview commented that Magnus had previously played the opening against Wesley So in the 2018 London Chess Classic,24 but there is no such game on record.25 Magnus did play a g3 Nimzo-Indian against Wesley So in a rapid game in Kolkota in 2019, but the move order and emerging position in that game had no similarities to the game against Hans. Hans’s 9...cxd4 had only been played once previously, in a June 2022 Titled Tuesday game between Rasmus Svane and Stelios Halkias.

thexumaker··on Why is Snowflake so expensive
We did the same thing but with self hosted runners with github actions.

https://github.com/philips-labs/terraform-aws-github-runner

phillips-labs has some good resources for scaling this up as well.
