thetrendycyborg··on With Today's Protests, SOPA Becomes a Mainstream Issue
Today, my fiancee called me and asked: "This SOPA thing. I think it's bad. Is it bad?" I hadn't mentioned it before, really. So it is definitely hitting the mainstream.

This has rekindled my hope for humanity. I used to think most people are dumb. But people are really willing to look at, think about, and act on pressing issues, if you bring it up with them directly.

thetrendycyborg··on Fax Your Representatives to stop SOPA / PIPA
This happened for me. Then I reloaded the page.
thetrendycyborg··on MPAA Response to White House Position on Anti-Piracy Legislation
Doesn't matter. What matters is that they mentioned a keyword (jobs) and that means they're a job-creator and everyone who opposes the bill hates jobs.
thetrendycyborg··on Wozniak praising Android over iPhone limitations
for those "scared of complexity" or "scared of computers altogether."
thetrendycyborg··on Ubuntu Unity 5.0 is out and ready for testing
It's almost perfect, I just wish it were uglier.
thetrendycyborg··on Android Design
you can break out tabs into a separate action bar or use scrollable tabs. You're using elements from another platform your users don't use. You're just going to confuse or annoy them.
thetrendycyborg··on Android Design
in 2 years everyone will have ics or better. carrier contracts.

you know you can just press the number and use the keyboard, right?
thetrendycyborg··on Android Design
it doesn't always drop down. Sometimes it "drops" up, like if the element is at the bottom of the phone. You can "spin" through options. Makes sense.
thetrendycyborg··on Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?
Yes. But they do a lot of these editorials, which seem to get linked frequently. I guess that's what I end up seeing. I see more links to the NYTimes talking about itself then I see links to news on the NYTimes.
thetrendycyborg··on Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?
The New York Times has always struck me as rather pretentious and self-important. They seem to report about themselves as much as the news.
thetrendycyborg··on How to nap
Finally! I was wondering how to do this!

On a real note, napping changed my life. And when I had my own business, it really helped productivity to have a nap in the middle of the day. Now I work for the machine, and naps are unfortunately not allowed.

comic sans. Comic sans. Why? WHY?
thetrendycyborg··on List of every member of congress who supports SOPA, sortable by donations
Other possibility: your understanding of the world was flawed and needs to be adjusted. You were mad.
thetrendycyborg··on List of every member of congress who supports SOPA, sortable by donations
California's Dems are co-sponsors.
thetrendycyborg··on Marked.js is a markdown parser built for speed
and for node. And it's almost as fast as a C implementation. JS isn't terrible, you know. People just never learn it because it's confusing. It's more similar to lisp than to C, except for the syntax.

And built for speed doesn't mean "the fastest." It just means within this implementation the goal was speed.

thetrendycyborg··on It Pays to Know Ruby: New York City’s Top Tech Jobs (and Their Average Salary)
Well, it can vary. I can only speak to my own experience. I live just outside the city in Jersey. It's a bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal (located on 42nd and 8th), then a subway ride to work. Total time: 30min. In rush hour: 45min. That's why flex time is nice. Other places in New Jersey you can take the PATH train. That's 15 minutes, and if you work in the Financial District, it drops you off right at the World Trade Center. Usually you wouldn't even need to drive in New Jersey if you're in Jersey City or Hoboken or even as far north as Bergen, if you position yourself near a bus stop.
thetrendycyborg··on It Pays to Know Ruby: New York City’s Top Tech Jobs (and Their Average Salary)
Yeah, these results seem a bit off. ~$100 gets you an MTA 30-day pass. That's probably less than gas and maintenance for your average monthly commute elsewhere.
thetrendycyborg··on It Pays to Know Ruby: New York City’s Top Tech Jobs (and Their Average Salary)
Most of the developers I know are twenty-somethings. Some of the older devs have kids, but they usually don't live in Manhattan proper. Long Island City, Astoria, Brooklyn, New Jersey, etc, are much preferred. I know only one dev who lives in Manhattan.

Commuting is amazingly nice in this area.

thetrendycyborg··on It Pays to Know Ruby: New York City’s Top Tech Jobs (and Their Average Salary)
These numbers seem low. But as for cost of living, don't live in New York itself. The longer your commute, the more you save. Time is the trade-off, of course. If you get some partial work-from-home, you're golden. I have a fairly nice sized (1200 square foot) apartment within 30 minutes by bus and train from work.
thetrendycyborg··on Vnc.js: how to build a JavaScript VNC Client
Atwood's Law marches on.
thetrendycyborg··on Teachers Don’t Like Creative Students
You assume that education for most must be done by the state. Yes, what I stated is a solution, and it does work around the state education problem. I admit the possibility that the state education system can be fixed, but I also admit the probability that it won't be in my lifetime.

If you have a problem, and you can use a different infrastructure to avoid it at an acceptable cost, it makes sense to use it.

thetrendycyborg··on What are the lesser known but cool data structures?

thetrendycyborg··on New Blender 3D with Motion Tracking, new rendering engine, dynamic paint
I used to be pretty good at it. It is a style meant for using the application and nothing else. It is extraordinarily efficient.
thetrendycyborg··on New Blender 3D with Motion Tracking, new rendering engine, dynamic paint
I love using Blender. I wish I had enough time to use it.
thetrendycyborg··on We do not want your job
You could have rewritten this as "we want to work for a finished product." I don't think everyone shares that sentiment.
