It looks like: "Myspace's lose is SV's gain". :)
thepanister··on Scientists Fear Visa Trouble Will Drive Foreign Students Away
It's not new, it's not about islam and its' not about 911

Did anyone faced such troubles before 9/11? Believe me, America did not even care about activating it's immigration laws as it's happening now.

extra search and bag check now whenever I fly in the US.

These words remind me with what an egyptian girl told me, when she traveled to U.S.: "Their procedures are very repetitive"

Why would they keep make a search everytime you travel, since they already knew that you are working for the government, and you look like a "low risk traveller", according to DHS!

If America is serious about it's security, then they should make it automated with "human editors".

The Department of state in D.C. is talking about work shortage... I don't know how does Americans check their security at their airports, but if they can have automated systems with data mining figures, and automated detection for "high risk travelers", then it should allow them to keep "secure", keep costs low, no need for more employees, and it's done!

I think that Usama Fayyad can do such a thing for them.

thepanister··on Scientists Fear Visa Trouble Will Drive Foreign Students Away
Why there are students who are sad or angry just because their visas were "delayed"?

I am Stanford summer student for 2008, and I was not even granted the visa! I lost hundreds of dollars, faced insults at the embassy, did not even get the visa, and that's it.

I would be crazy if I even think of applying for a U.S. visa again! It's a dignity matter.

It's America's rights to protect it's land, but it's not America's right to be paranoid about Islam forever.

If America wants to continue to be the leader in this world, then America has to keep it's doors open... there is no choice!

It's really so weird for me that America is acting like that, while we are in the globalization time... I can order books from Amazon, sell my old items on ebay, look at any street in America using Google maps, make a new friendships with guys at Stanford, and read nytimes at a time while I am in Cairo, Egypt!

It's very weird because America focuses much more on the physical security, while leaving the online security, which looks much dangerous for me!

thepanister··on Interview with Paul Buchheit
Paul, I have a question!

What is the programming language that Gmail was coded with?

Thanks.

thepanister··on The Pirate Bay Trial Day 10: Calls for Jail Time
They are saying that: "actually hosted in Asia as well as Africa."!

If they hosted it in Sinai, then "actually" it stills in Asia, not Africa! Sinai is the only part in Egypt that belongs to Asia... I am from Egypt and I know it.

thepanister··on Interview with Paul Buchheit
Hi Paul, I am one of your fans from Egypt.

just about anything is good enough (even Hotmail) Hotmail now allows you to mark message as "read", do you believe it? They did not offer this option for years!

Anyway, I have a question for you. I am working on my startup, and I really like your approach: "launch fast and iterate"... but I am afraid of users! I am afraid from their judgements on my startup..

Do you have any solution to "get rid" of this fear?

EDIT: Even if I receive -8, I am not going to change a charachter of this!

thepanister··on Ask YC: Has anyone incorporated as a Vermont Virtual Company?
I think that Godaddy offers a service for international merchants who want to sell online. I am not sure if their service is reliable or not, but it's expensive anyway.

If you know someone American who trust you so much and vice versa, then you can do the same I did. Believe me, I never met that friend in real life, because I never been in America!

thepanister··on Ask YC: Has anyone incorporated as a Vermont Virtual Company?
Good question!

I asked my best friend - which is American - to do it using her personal info, so she created a bank account specially for it, and she applied for EIN, for the taxes.

I am from Egypt, and Paypal is not even enabled for Egyptians, so it could be impossible for me to do it, without the help of "someone American".

thepanister··on Interview with Paul Buchheit
I am very big fan of Paul! This guy is more than awesome.

In everytime I read his blog, and in everytime I read something he says... I just learn something new or a good habit that I should have!

thepanister··on On Buying Silicon Valley
If I want to be a billionaire, I want to be, just to replicate the Silicon Valley here in Cairo, Egypt!

One of my big wishes is having a copy of Stanford University here... and what a crazy? I want to make it for free for high talented "poor" students.

thepanister··on Ask YC: Has anyone incorporated as a Vermont Virtual Company?
I am selling online, and I am not even American, and I never been in America before!

Apply for Employr identification no., and then apply for PayPal Payments pro. It will cost you around $30/mo.

Also you can have it hosted on Yahoo! stores/ small business - which is invented by PG - former known as viaweb :D

I think this is a good, fast and reliable solution for you.

thepanister··on Ask HN: Best places to live in Silicon Valley for families?
Check out this blog: http://www.svmoms.com

I think it could contain helpful info for you, specially for your wife and kids.

thepanister··on Ask YC: how do you manage bookmarks?
Maybe it's the time for you to implement your own bookamrks service. :)

Great entrepreneurs do startups about things they needed!

thepanister··on Is it a good idea to put adsense ads on a start-up promotional blog?
From my little experience, generally... it is not a good idea for a new startup to put ads on it's website.

But if it's urgent for you to put ads, then don't put more than 1 rectangle ad per page!

thepanister··on Why Skilled Immigrants Are Leaving the U.S
Well, If skilled immigrants are leaving U.S., and consider that there are many skilled workers that are not in U.S., then maybe it's the time to make a virtual Silicon Valley on the internet?

So regardless where you are, you can enter "the virtual" Silicon Valley, and you won't have to apply for a visa!

thepanister··on Top 15K English words
The blog entry does not show up... But I when I visited the blog's home page, I was able to read the post.

EDIT: Thank you so much for this list, I really needed it.. although it contains words like: "she", "the", "and", and such words that I don't really consider it words.

EDIT: Do you know what? After I read the technical part of sorting this list, it gave me an idea.... Here is the idea:

1- Crawling news articles on daily basis, from some well known news websites. 2- Each word found in an article, submit it to a list of words. 3- About the list of words: If the word is not found in the list, then add it to the list and give it rank 1. If the word is already in the list, then increase it's rank 1 point... so if it's 1, make it 2, and if its 30, make it 31. 4- Sorting the list by rank... and here we will have a real solution for finding the most found words! 5- We can make some filters to guarantee that a word won't be repeated... and also filter to detect names and remove it from the list... I am talking about names like public figure names, companies' names, countries' names, and such names.

P.S.: We can do it with any language... as long as we can find a news websites for that language that has new articles everyday!

What do you think? :)

thepanister··on Ask HN: computing in 2014 : your predictions?
Albert,

Do you think that everyone who has passed the karma threshold, does really have the ability to "down vote" a comment? I am talking about the ability, not the functionality!!!

This comment that I wrote above... I really believe in it, regardless if I am experienced or not. And anyway I am here to learn... I am here to meet great people like you... but it's not good at all to keep receiving down votes!

Yesterday, I commented on Paul Buchheit's post about his friendfeed with mysql.. and I wrote to him that I like him so much... I received down-vote because I wrote that!!!!!!!! Does it make any sense??!!!

The "guys" who can down-vote, are not angels or prophets... they are people that I can agree/disagree with them, and they are making mistakes for sure!

thepanister··on Ask HN: computing in 2014 : your predictions?
How many cores will a typical personal computer have?

Well, maybe by 2014, there will be something else other than cores??? Almost some geeks will create something innovative!!! Who knows?

EDIT: This world is changing in a crazy way... so fast pace more than you think... specially when it comes to the IT!!!

EDIT: Why would you really give me "0" point?!!!! 8-}

Do you think it's a "wise" idea to add Yahoo! indea's link here? :)
thepanister··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I want to be notified when someone replies to one of my comments - not stories!

Just a message box that would appear on the page that someone replied to one of my comments.. and this message box should appear only when there are new replies... along with links to the specified comments!

What do you think? :)

thepanister··on How Not to Die

Thanks to Paul... I am trying to build something since 2005... and his words just push me!

There is something funny that I really wish to see here... but it's not essential.

I want to see kind of analytical tool for my karma.. and see how I am doing!

Let me explain: Can you program a tool that would draw charts of your karma history... so you can see if your karma is raising or not? And it would be great if you can let the users choose to display their karma in specific dates!

There is something more advanced also... Can you analyze the topics that user is writing about that helped him in increasing his karma? Also recommend a stories for the user to comment on... that's related to the user's interested topics based on his/her previous comments.

I think this is hard somehow... because it needs so much of analyzing, data mining... and some logical factors to work with!

What do you think? :D

thepanister··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
Hey, This story has more than 660 comments on it, it takes many seconds to load, and it does not load completely!

I can't see the whole comments...the page stops loading!

Why don't you devide the comments to several pages? So you would display something like 100 comments per page.. and you click next to display the next 100, if any!

That would be better... page would load faster... and things would be fine!

thepanister··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I am not sure if someone asked for this or not..

To prevent any abuse to the story's title... why don't you make a curl/wget request to the URL that a user is submitting, and get the title of that URL/page automatically?

So... user won't have any control over the title when submitting a link.

In fact I need this feature.. because I am tired of copying the title of the story that I submit! :( What do you think?

thepanister··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I am not sure if someone asked for this before...

But I want to write a comment on someone's page... to contact him/her or ask about something.

Something like the "Wall" on Facebook.

And users would choose if they want to enable their "wall" or not... so they would have control over this... if they want people to write to them or not!

thepanister··on How do I promote my site?
Well... So you don't want to pay for Adwords? :) hmmm

Here is what you should do:

1- Submit it to all the free search engines like Google, Yahoo, msn, and others...

2- Create a blog for your website, and post at least 1 entry/week.

3- Make your website's content available in RSS feeds.

4- Post your website everywhere on the internet.... forums, blogs, rss feed burners, and everywhere.

5- Make an invitation tool for your website, registeration system, and let users import their contacts to invite their friends to your website...

Try to make it social as much as you can... and update it's home page daily... that would be great.

Also don't forget to add rich information that would be really useful to users. Content is the king!

If you follow this recipe, you will have a good base of users within 6 or 7 months!

thepanister··on Browser-based ‘Quake Live’ public beta today
You are great... seriously.

It looks crazy somehow... but when you live for the idea you want to implement, it gives your life so much of value, even if - sometimes - others would not really care about what you do...
