thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
Dear Sam, Congratulations for the website. After using it for couple of days, I think that you have a too long journey to make it in a beta edition!

The idea of the startup is really cool, but it's not about ideas only... as someone said before: Ideas are worthless!

The website lacks a zillion essential features, and even the existing features don't work properly!

For example, someone added me as a friend without my permission and I am trying to remove him, but noway!

Also there is a killing security hole in the website that could double or maybe trible your bills in the future, if someone "idiot" abuses it.

You have too long road... you need a developer with you! You need someone who just can't develop the website, but also someone who has a vision to take this startup to the next stage!

If you think that you have chosen the wrong programming language, then there is no shame in choosing another easier language like PHP.

Also it's ok to code it from the scratch.... even big projects are re-coded from the scratch!

Till now... you did not even fix the "30 charachters limit" for the email addresses!

Good luck.

thepanister··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I want a feature that would allow me to ping a user, so I would get his attention [ to me or to a post].

You can make a karma threshold, to prevent/reduce abuse. Also you can let users have the option to enable/disable this feature.

thepanister··on Ask HN: Why don't you ban the dead link forever?
I really wish that pg checks this entry out, because I am tired of the spam on this website - although it's relatively low.

check this out! http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=506273

I feel that there is no spam protection here!

You may consider using clickpass for logins, if you will require login. http://www.clickpass.com/
thepanister··on Ask HN: Server Anti Virus
You should be kidding! Do you want to compare linux built-in security with Microsoft's security holes and vulnerability?
thepanister··on Ask HN: Server Anti Virus
kaspersky.
thepanister··on Ask HN: Why don't you ban the dead link forever?
First of all, HN already has a ban list of websites! EDIT [I am not sure, but I think I read about this before]

Secondly, you should note that this is for posting news and articles, and such type of stuff does not change often! I am talking about banning the link - the url, not the whole domain!

And even if we suppose what you say is correct, then they should ban it at least for a while... like 3 months ban or something!

thepanister··on Academic Hacker News
This is very nice... but please change the green color of the bar to any other color, or change the color of the items in the menu... like make it white to appear! About marketing... don't forget to tell your friends and every student at your class about it and encourage them to join.

EDIT: I also advice you to check out this post: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=363 so you can know "what people want".. and the features that should be added.

Try to be creative, and look at the link above, so you can get more ideas about enhancing it.

It would be so cool if you keep allowing users to comment without login... or even with their Facebook account - Connect.

You can work around this to prevent automation, by IP detection... like each IP can't submit more than 10 comments in an hour at the same domain name, and such similar techniques.

You can distrebute it, to let anyone use it at their websites.

thepanister··on Ask HN: Review my First Open Source Project - CommentWidget
This is so cool...

But did you think of security? To prevent automation for example?

thepanister··on A bad economy is good for the bees
Your ID: pj looks so phishing for me!

I thought that you are pg for the first impression!

thepanister··on Zimbra has more users than Gmail. And they are paying.
I used Zimbra for the first time, when I became Stanford student. When I logged in to my Stanford University email, I found out it's Zimbra...

Zimbra is really great product, and yeah... more than 40 MM are using it; What is the problem with that?

thepanister··on Shotput Ventures Open Up Apps
Well, it's absolutely NOT the same "thing"! I don't know pg in person, or any of his partners at YC, and I never talked to them in person... but here is what I know:

1- YC is hosted at the Silicon Valley, which is considered a huge advantage itself.

2- YC is a well known brand name in the seed funding, and if your startup goes to investor under YC's brand name, then they will listen to you, just because you are funded by YC, and they trust it.

3- If you are funded by YC, then everyone in the Silicon Valley will know about your startup so fast!

4- Because of YC, all the editors on the web, like TechCrunch will write articles about your startup. Like what happened with DivvyShot and others.

5- You would be so lucky to be funded by YC, simply because they are experts! Paul and his partner has a vision... it's not only about the money and investment! And their vision and ideas are probably playing a critical role in their startups life!

thepanister··on Question: Does a blog sub-domain help the Pagerank and popularity of your main website?
I thought that PR takes in mind the whole site, and the domain name, and the relativity between other pages on the same website?
thepanister··on Ask / Tell YC: Maximum email field length
This is not the reason I am talking about! I mean: I see no "technical" reason!

Is it possible to change: max_length=30 to any other int? like 50 or 90? It's not good to have a system that lacks even the most simple things!

thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
It's a great way to find early adopters and testers for the product!
thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
I think it's the same as they wrote about likaholix.com , which is by ex-googlers, and stills at too early stage, too!
thepanister··on Ask / Tell YC: Maximum email field length
Well, It's weird... my 32 charachter email address does not work at DivvyShot too! I reported the report, but no response. They accept 30 charachters only, but I see no reason for that!

I think it's so important to give your users the most wider options, so you never miss a user, specially when it comes to the signup page! Users won't wait for you.. they will just be pissed off and leave!

Personally, I make it 155 charchters in my databases... I lose nothing to do so! But I think that 90 charachters look so reasonable.

thepanister··on Would a shopping engine look bad if it added affiliate IDs to product URLs?
I think that this is a good idea, if you want to implement it.

It looks like a built-in monetization solution!

thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
According to what I read at the xsl file above, it looks likt it's the costs/user...

Don't tell me that this website is for scalable photo sharing!

You scale up and down your photos storage, and you pay as you go!

thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
I can't sign up! Please increase the email address' field to 50 charachters, so I would be able to sign up!

Thanks!

thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
Consider adding captcha on the signup, to prevent automation!

Also, can users email their photos, even if they are not registered?

thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
read this at the bottom of the page: Hurry! Only 738 free alpha accounts available! After the first 1,000 accounts, we're going to charge for storage.
thepanister··on Divvyshot [YC W09]: Photo-sharing for groups
Congratulations. Looks very attractive!

If you can find a way to help users "move"/import their stuff from their current service to yours, then it would be really great. Also if you consider adding service like printing or something...

thepanister··on Ask HN: Funding for a teen startup
Well, maybe if it's about k12/high school education, but if it's about computer education/CBT for example, the situation might be different!

I had a website that I was selling advanced CBT on it, like PHP, C, cisco, perl training videos, and it was doing very good. I had to stop it because the items that I was selling were illegal, and this was the only reason. :)

thepanister··on Ask HN: Funding for a teen startup
Well, single founder is not good, but it's possible.

Just see if you can do it alone, if you can't, then try to ask one of your friends to do it with you.

thepanister··on Ask HN: Funding for a teen startup
Apply for funding from ycombinator: http://ycombinator.com/s2009.html

And you will know.

thepanister··on Ex-Googlers Start Up Likaholix, A Micro-Sharing Service For Personal Recommendations
I signed up for the service, and I found HN ycombinator there. I recommended ycombinator of course!

The service is very simple... but maybe this is good if we look at it from the "launch fast and iterate" approach!

thepanister··on Scientists Fear Visa Trouble Will Drive Foreign Students Away
but the great majority of Muslims do not feel an image of Muhammad is worth a riot. In fact the great majority of Muslims feel an image of Muhammed is worth a riot, and even a war! Because Muhammed is not a normal person... he is a prophet.

And yeah... most Muslims don't really take their religion as seriously the intellectual framework commands... although we suppose to take Islam as a framework for our lives!

thepanister··on Scientists Fear Visa Trouble Will Drive Foreign Students Away
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Although you admitted that you are an Islam hater, I really find it useless to make a debate with you. Do you know why? Because most of the information you listed above is wrong!

You have made the same mistake that many others do everyday... You judge on Islam just because of less than 0.000000001% of Muslims have declared the war against America.

Do you think that Islam agrees on bombs? If there is a religion that asks you to kill others, then it's not worth believing in it!

I am sure that when you will have the correct information about Islam, and about Muslims too, your point of view will be totally changed!

How many bombers are out there? Million bombers? Although million bombers is not realistic number, but even if it's truth, then there are more than 1.5 Billions muslims in the world!

Devide 1 million/1.5 billion and then * 100 , and look at the percentage!
