Honestly I have so many issues getting notifications on Slack. Messages go completely missed even when I have the user VIP'd, starred, notifications on, everything. I don't know what else I can do to make sure I get messages, to the point I ask people to reach out on Signal if I don't get back to them on Slack and it's at all urgent.

Agreed. But talking in generalities like "the government should be allowed to mandate a feature" leads to silly arguments like "government can't mandate airbags." We should be having the discussion about what the goal is, what the mandate would be, and what the side effects could be. Otherwise the conversation is too high level to mean anything.

It seems very reasonable to require a feature in an OS, like requiring seatbelts in a car. Of course, it depends on the feature though.

Sometimes I wonder if the US government purposely doesn't allocate a chunk of bandwidth to a medium range digital mesh network protocol specifically to prevent losing centralized control of communications. It was only through a backdoor (LoRa) that things like Meshtastic can exist. Imagine if a protocol could be designed for it instead of having to reuse one meant for IoT sensors, it'd be incredible.

All of my bank apps work fine on graphene. I'd switch banks if their app stopped working, not stop using graphene. I stopped using Google wallet, I don't miss it enough to justify using stock android. For other apps, I just put them in a separate profile that has good play installed/configured. Why don't we just require kids to price they're an adult before accessing the Internet then? The issue with these laws isn't the goal, but the implementation is fatally flawed. Do you think websites like Worldstar are going to implement age verification? Of course not, no foreign site will. Then the next step for a law like this must be censuring all of those sites across the country.

Who defines what should be censored? The law certainly doesn't; it's purposefully vague to give the most latitude possible to the implementers. There's already been cases with the new UK law where peaceful arrests were censored by the law due to "violence."

VPNs exist, proxy websites are easy to setup, and frankly parents need to take some ownership.

Two alternative laws that'd have been much better: a) Require ISPs to provide a child friendly Internet gateway that would blacklist large weather if the Internet without a login. And b) legally require websites to accurately describe the content on their page and it's age appropriateness in headers sent back to the user, so the ISP or end device can decide whether to age gate a website.

These are much better solutions, the burden on websites isn't so onerous (many small sites have already had to shutdown due to the burden of the UK law). Implementation is distributed, preventing a single state actor from having full control of a censorship machine. Parents are empowered to decide what content is okay for their children. And you don't have to upload your fucking ID to use the Internet.

I don't think anyone is being laid off because of AI. People are being laid off because the market is bad for a myriad of reasons, and companies are blaming AI because it helps them deflect worry that might lower their stock price.

In that case I'd normally recommend a bastion host with SSH MFA and fail2ban. It'd be publicly available and have SSH keys for other machines. Or you could look at setting up a VPN solution with MFA, but never have a password only admin login exposed to the public Internet.

It's a bit different. Digits is based on the Tegra CPU, which is an ARM chip with integrated nvidia GPU. It's nearly COTS (commercial off the shelf), but not quite. Tegra CPU support isn't in mainline linux, so you have to run their fork of Ubuntu or build your own kernel. The integrated GPU is a special class in nvidia drivers, and some things just don't work on it (they only work on a discrete GPU) for seemingly no reason too.
