theolivenbaum··on Show HN: Revenut – A lightweight open-source alternative to Stripe's mobile app
It amazes me that a company the size of Stripe is unable to put together a descent mobile app. Raised a few bugs over the years and eventually gave up and started using the browser, nothing ever got fixed or improved in this time
theolivenbaum··on Wikipedia search-by-vibes through millions of pages offline
That might actually be making things worse for longer articles. It probably would be better would be to index them separately and aggregate back to article level post query
theolivenbaum··on Supplier caught distributing fake parts for world’s top-selling jet engine
Here's the link to the EASA note on this: https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/domains/aircraft-products/susp...

It seems like they're caught providing fake documents from one of their suppliers

Musk's foolish actions while owner of Twitter are not rare yet always on the news
theolivenbaum··on Amazon acquires Fig
Reminds me of Slapdash's and Command-E acquisitions. Both still living in a limbo last I checked...
theolivenbaum··on Texas electricity prices soar 6k% as heat wave is expected to shatter records
Isn't that the whole issue in Texas, that end customers can decide to pay the spot prices? Something similar happened last time they had issues: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/20/us/texas-storm-electric-b...
theolivenbaum··on Retrieving 1TB of data from a faulty drive with the help of woodworking tools
And for the freezer method, be careful with humidity when you take it out. Worth putting it in a bag with some dehumidifiers and just take the cable out
theolivenbaum··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
Imagine filling up your car to 100% but only extracting ~40% of it as usable energy...
theolivenbaum··on Show HN: Epsilla – Open-source vector database with low query latency
Because wrapping HNSW is just that easy. Same with all the ChatGPT-based tools popping around a dozen a week, it's just easy to throw something together and see if it sticks.
theolivenbaum··on A Really Big Computer
Everything is easy if you don't have to actually go through with your plan
theolivenbaum··on Tim Hunkin (Secret Lives of Machines)
Went there a few months ago, absolutely worth a visit!
theolivenbaum··on Building the Future of X
Scraping the bottom of the barrel for anything that can show "progress"
theolivenbaum··on FreeWilly 1 and 2, two new open-access LLMs

theolivenbaum··on Keeping Open Source Open
Which is both brilliant and surprising that RH didn't see it coming
theolivenbaum··on Tell HN: Yahoo Mail deletes all emails due to inactivity
What a terrible police... Just logged on an old account of mine and it's indeed all gone!
theolivenbaum··on GPT-4's Has Been Revealed
I almost stopped reading after reading Hotz was a serious source
theolivenbaum··on Reddit CEO lashes out on protests, moderators and third-party apps
What's the order of magnitude of requests the API serve per day? I've build a demo on top of HN data and I had a feeling that most of it is quite static and could easily be cached behind something like cloudflare
theolivenbaum··on Code search on GitHub now requires login
Or just use grep.app
theolivenbaum··on Venetians are pondering raising their entire city
Also always confused by this - been there 5 times over the years in different seasons and never had any issues with it
theolivenbaum··on Show HN: HNRelevant – Show related HN submissions in an integrated sidebar
Cool project! I was thinking about something similar since we played with an embeddings index model on HN titles for our demo at hn.curiosity.ai If you want I could expose an API for you to use on the extension
theolivenbaum··on Show HN: HNRelevant – Show related HN submissions in an integrated sidebar
Cool project! Was thinking about something similar since we tried an embeddings index on HN titles for our demo (hn.curiosity.ai), and was really impressed with the results. If you want I can expose an API for you to use too
theolivenbaum··on Show HN: Ki Programming Language
Confused by the "C#: We do not use languages that expect you to install a 20GB IDE just to compile a 'hello world'." note, the .NET SDK is ~200MB last I checked, and Visual Studio is not required to compile C#. Seems like the https://ki-lang.dev/dist/download/linux/x64/latest build from Ki is ~40MB, so similarly sized.
theolivenbaum··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
Plus they increased significantly the price per query, I was really wondering how this would affect Neeva and others building on top of it https://techmonitor.ai/technology/software/bing-microsoft-ap...
theolivenbaum··on How Not to Write a Microbenchmark (2002)
I had not realized just how bad SlideShare had become over the years. One full screen ad every 6 slides is crazy
theolivenbaum··on Google Cloud Europe service disruption
Wait it's not DNS for a change?
theolivenbaum··on HuggingChat
Any news if model weights are copyrightable?
theolivenbaum··on It's not only you, there's an explosion of ChatGPT on HN
Yeah it's a tricky situation - I for once welcome all the articles, as it's hard to keep up with how much is changing on the space on a daily basis - so many new releases, models, open and closed source projects. It has been very informative to keep up with it by visiting HN!

What I was surprised by putting this together was just how much similar content is posted here every day - just click on the "Similar stories" under each post on our site to see how almost any given topic has quite a lot of content! Makes one give value to the curation being done by users and mods here that avoid making this repetition too visible (and annoying) on the site!

theolivenbaum··on It's not only you, there's an explosion of ChatGPT on HN
Don't give me ideas, I might have to add a clone of https://tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations for HN posts!
