themoonisachees··on Want to spot a deepfake? Look for the stars in their eyes
GP told you how they don't work, but not how they do:

Current image generators work by training models to remove artificial noise added to the training set. Take an image, add some amount of noise, and feed it with it's description as inputs to your model. The closest the output is to the original image, the highest the reward function.

Using some tricks (a big one is training simultaneously on large and small amounts of noise), you ultimately get a model that can remove 99% noise based only on the description you feed it, and that means you can just swap out the description for what you want the model to generate and feed it pure noise, and it'll do a good job.

themoonisachees··on SSH has become our universal (Unix) external access protocol
Apart from the complexities added by having to build this in the first place, this works, but requires a desktop environment, which is not true of ssh.

You could make the argument that this could be an off-the-shelf product you simply install, but then the default port for it because as big of a target as port 22 as soon as it becomes commonplace enough, except you don't have 20+ years of open-source security research in it, and now you're relying on AWS not being now in your region to connect to your servers.

themoonisachees··on IQM achieves 99.9% 2-qubit gate fidelity and 1 millisecond coherence time
I am nowhere near an expert but from what i know:

Having many qubits is of course vital to most quantum algorithms, but there's a good reason you can't simply run a quantum algorithm a qubit at a time until you've ran them all: you need all the qubits in the processor to be entangled to each other, so that the wave function collapses across all of them.

Here IBM has achieved this reliably across 2 qubits and with record processing speed. I don't think they were the first to achieve it at all, but this is a new record in terms of the important metrics beyond number of qubits.

themoonisachees··on Standard cells: Looking at individual gates in the Pentium processor
I watched the video of your talk and it seems impressive. I work in an IP design firm, though I don't have any decision power there I could get you a foot in the door. If you're interested in trying to convince the brass, could you send an email to Eli dot senn at dolphin dot fr?
themoonisachees··on Ask HN: Trouble learning things I view as solutions looking for a problem
I mean, that's what happened. I don't know how else I could phrase this.
themoonisachees··on Ask HN: Trouble learning things I view as solutions looking for a problem
Right but the value proposition of Dropbox wasn't the tech it was built on, it was the fact they gave you free cloud storage in exchange for an email address.
themoonisachees··on Microsoft's Xandr grants GDPR rights at a rate of 0%
What!? The entire ad industry is a scam to everyone involved? Who could have for seen this?
themoonisachees··on Z-Library admins "escape house arrest" after judge approves U.S. extradition
US doctrine says that the perpetrator can be anywhere, they're getting sued near the victim. Most courts in the world have similar doctrine, as that allows suing any foreign national you can extradite to you instead of having to e.g. sue in a Chinese court.
themoonisachees··on NanoKVM: Affordable, Multifunctional, Nano RISC-V IP-KVM
That's what you should use, yes. It's a bit different in enterprise because you want to stagger the restarts of all your servers to avoid browning out the recently restored power, but for an at-home system that's fine.
themoonisachees··on Standard cells: Looking at individual gates in the Pentium processor
All tools at use in the last gen industry (40-12nm) currently make extensive use of standard cell librairies provided by foundries. I don't expect current gen nor next gen to change anything.

themoonisachees··on The Cheapest NAS
These boxes are also great for running a k8s cluster if you want to experiment.
themoonisachees··on 25 years of video clips gone as Paramount axes Comedy Central wesbite
IIRC a part of copyright "activating" is publishing the content in the first place, so I don't think GP would have a good case to begin with, not that it matters.
themoonisachees··on Microsoft removes documentation for switching to a local account in Windows 11
I've done that. I kept a windows install on the side for the few games that don't have a permissive enough anticheat, but I basically never use it anymore since The Finals has allowed Proton. It's going great.
themoonisachees··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
The main problem with canaries is that it's dead easy for a government to remove them from existence, simply issue subpoenas to every website that has one.

The users could then decide to jump ship but realistically they won't.

themoonisachees··on TSMC experimenting with rectangular wafers vs. round for more chips per wafer
That's fair enough.
themoonisachees··on TSMC experimenting with rectangular wafers vs. round for more chips per wafer
I mean. The idea sounds fun but doing photolithography on a pipe's surface sounds like absolute hell.
themoonisachees··on Off-path TCP hijacking in NAT-enabled Wi-Fi networks
This specific attack is unable to exploit this, because it requires that the TCP connection be already established. By the time the user had gotten the server's public key, you are unable to hijack the connection.
themoonisachees··on What You Get After Running an SSH Honeypot for 30 Days
If your server has something that listens on port 22, you just have to wait for like 5 minutes
themoonisachees··on First chip-based 3D printer is smaller than a coin with no moving parts
Plenty of brands offer DLP-based printers, like the elegoo mars 4 DLP.
themoonisachees··on Zeekr 007: This $36,000 Tesla Model 3 Competitor Proves We're Cooked
My thoughts exactly. This also applies to not cars. American (and indeed global) tech companies are security nightmares, and no amount of posturing about china specifically will fix it. "Great job Patrick we saved the city", they said in front of meta after banning TikTok.
themoonisachees··on Hacking millions of modems and investigating who hacked my modem
I'd like the record to show that the upgraded mobile apps are significantly worse than the old ones. The old ones are currently still available to download, for now.
themoonisachees··on Engineering for Slow Internet
It's very much not an overloading issue. This always happens, even at 3 AM.
themoonisachees··on A man ordered to hide his boat painted the boat on his fence
The HOA is generally allowed to put a lien on your house, through the contract you were forced to sign with them.
themoonisachees··on Engineering for Slow Internet
I see this in my french city, there's a particular spot on my commute where my phone (mediatek) will report 2 bars of 5G but speeds will actually be around 3G. I've also noticed other people on the tram having their videos buffer at that spot, so it's not just me. The carriers do not care, of course.

I think there's just some of these areas where operational conditions make the towers break in some specific way.

themoonisachees··on Google releases smart watch for kids
No you don't. You could also simply not drink the poison.
themoonisachees··on Controlling the Taylor Swift Eras Tour wristbands with Flipper Zero
I think at least a few photography nerds would notice the 30W white blob coming from where you're standing. Now whether that would get you in trouble...
themoonisachees··on Reclaiming IPv4 Class E's 240.0.0.0/4
I think the intent comes from the fact that most people never use any other address that 127.0.0.1 (yes, I know about docker DNS). It sort of comes across as if you were "wasting" a large block of adresses on functions that are seldom used. In reality though, this isn't a solution and we should really just go forwards with ipv6.
themoonisachees··on What's the difference between a motor and an engine? (2013)
French uses "Moteur" because it doesn't have a word for "engine". The closest is "engin", but that means "contraption" and generally applies to the entire class of "large mechanical devices that move".

Both Motor and Engine are generally translated into french as "Moteur"

themoonisachees··on Ask HN: Why is ChatGPT allowed to scrape other sites via prompts?
There is a YouTube video about a content creator who got a huge AWS bill out of byte spider (bytedance's scraper) indexing his site incredible numbers of times.
themoonisachees··on Show HN: Digital player board for Terraforming Mars
Very nice! This could easily be adapted to the Ares Expedition expansion/other game thing:

Remove production of titanium and steel, remove energy entirely. Players start at 5 TL and 0 production everywhere. They can also produce cards, maybe add a pop-up like "draw x cards now!" Whenever production happens?
