themeiguoren··on The End of Uber with Cory Doctorow
Cars would also look a lot safer if you didn’t look at the top slice of riskiest drivers. Apples to apples.
themeiguoren··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
I’ve got a specific LinkedIn hack - my name on it is Firstname “Nickname” Lastname. If I get a message addressed to Firstname or to Nickname, I know someone actually read it before sending and I’ll respond. If it’s to Firstname “Nickname”, then I know it’s an automated shotgun blast and I generally ignore it.
themeiguoren··on Agatha Christie could afford a maid and a nanny but not a car
Through the conversation, you learn the idiosyncrasies of the other person. In a culture where haggling is normal, their “style” gives you insight into their personality and how they might act in other scenarios. And it identifies you as an insider or outsider to the culture. At the very least, you’ve learned their name and face.

I also hate haggling, and since I’m not from a culture where it’s a norm I can’t use it to read deeper into a person. (Or them into me.) But it’s not too hard to imagine how it helps to build relationships.

themeiguoren··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
Bitwarden is free, 1password for yourself costs $36/yr. That was my reason for using it - I try to avoid subscriptions like the plague.
themeiguoren··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
Who's the author for Immune? There seem to be quite a few books with that title.
themeiguoren··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
As a backpacker, Nalgenes are vastly overrated for real trekking. They’re rugged for no real reason - you’ll do well swapping your nalgenes for dead simple 1 liter cheap plastic water bottles from the gas station. When they’re empty they weigh nothing and you can crunch them down. And they’re far tougher than one would think - mine are going on years. Weight and volume are the metrics that matter.

Nalgenes are nice for casual around town use though, they’ve got a great aesthetic and the stickers are fun.

themeiguoren··on QOI: Lossless Image Compression in O(n) Time
This is sweet, I love things that are both performant and not totally black magic.

> Seeing how every change I made affected the compression ratio was quite exciting.

I’m curious, do you have a rough breakdown of how much each of the techniques bought you?

themeiguoren··on Acquisition of chess knowledge in AlphaZero
The fallacy here is that we can only measure whether AZ is playing human strategies, by comparing against our own known space of strategies. Sure, we human have developed good heuristics the AI has also found, but we can’t know if it has better/more subtle concepts that we haven’t discovered, exactly because we haven’t discovered them yet. Who is to say “mobility” is even a coherent top level concept compared to some unpronounceable abstraction the AI has figured out?
themeiguoren··on Colorado 'solar garden' is a farm under solar panels
Thankfully when it’s cloudy, your peak loads from AC are a lot lower.
themeiguoren··on Ocean drone captures video from inside a hurricane
Yeah, I would love this camera setup to be upgraded to a stereo pair.
themeiguoren··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
I’d expect natural immunity to be more robust to future covid mutations than vaccination, since our bodies will have been exposed to and responded against all parts of covid’s biology rather than just the spike proteins.
themeiguoren··on 112 Gripes About the French
It’s an anachronism that doesn’t fly today, but to be fair this seems descriptive rather than prescriptive.
themeiguoren··on Podswap: Keep airpods alive and out of the landfill
> And if even one person starts using less plastic because of that, it was a success.

I can buy not relying on the first order impacts of banning plastic straws for the coat-benefit analysis, but relying on second-order effects doesn’t mean you get to toss out cost-benefit altogether.

themeiguoren··on Juul bought an entire issue of a scholarly journal
This is the best single source compendium I’ve seen on the question: https://www.gwern.net/Nicotine
themeiguoren··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
> we don’t distribute copies of humans

A bit of a tangent and it’s fictional, but I really have to recommend the tale of MMAcevedo. https://qntm.org/mmacevedo

themeiguoren··on United Airlines will buy 15 planes from Boom Supersonic
Worth noting that human sound perception is logarithmic, not linear. A 90% reduction in sound is -20dB, which is significant. But in human perception terms, that’s only about a fifth of the range of the typical soundscape which ranges from the 20dB of a quiet room to the 120dB of an ambulance siren.
themeiguoren··on Amazon Fake Reviews Scam Exposed in Data Breach
FakeSpot and ReviewMeta are up on different tabs every time I buy something new on Amazon, and they do a pretty good job of alerting you to scammy reviews without any internal Amazon info. I can’t imagine it’s not something an internal team could make a serious dent in.
themeiguoren··on Internal Combustion Engine
Well that’s just because we understand internal combustion engines well enough that we can abstract away a lot of the details. Software engineering is nice because by design it is at a level of abstraction that we can grok it. We’re basically manipulating structural concepts of pure thought. But never forget that reality has a surprising amount of detail. When we interact with the physical world, we rely on abstractions at our peril.

themeiguoren··on Small cities in America’s Mountain West are booming
I don’t think there’s a convincing argument to be made for complaining about new full-time residents. For second homes and Airbnb’s however, I see a lot of potential for degradation that comes from having transient community members of that aren’t fully vested in the well-being of the local social & economic landscape. I think that measures such as additional taxation on secondary homes or blocking municipal voting rights of people who don’t live their for at least half the year, would do a lot to blunt the downsides of outside interest. But afaik I haven’t seen such things being put forward.
themeiguoren··on Is that ship still stuck?
I’m thinking a shipping container zipline.
themeiguoren··on John Cleese Sells the Brooklyn Bridge as an NFT
It hasn’t hit the reserve price, so I imagine that was set to something ludicrous and he never intends for this performance to actually be sold.
themeiguoren··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
I’ll also add that it’s more convenient than I expected - the three credit bureaus all let you unlock your file temporarily up until a specified date, after which it will re-lock without you having to log back in.
themeiguoren··on How I cut GTA Online loading times by 70%
I would not at all be surprised if the long load time made for a sunk cost that kept people playing for longer sessions rather than picking it up for less than half an hour at a time.
themeiguoren··on Perseverance Rover lands on Mars [video]
The low resolution and fuzz is also because they still have the lens caps on - they are of course transparent lens caps in case the explosive bolts that will release them fail. Redundancy!
themeiguoren··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
IMO understanding the arguments is useless without understanding how they were built, and what their caveats and assumptions are. Otherwise you end up parroting talking points without actually having thought about it. I’d rather people not hold an opinion on something than hold an unfounded one. A doc is not a good format for grounded understanding.
themeiguoren··on OpenStreetMap proven to be a highly accurate map in top US cities
You were helping google, but you were also helping everyone who used their maps from that day into the future. Your comment gives off the air of someone upset they helped the wrong party in a zero-sum game. IMO, this is clearly a positive sum one, and you shouldn’t despair at improving little corners of the world just because actors you don’t like will also benefit.
themeiguoren··on How to lower the price of plant-based meat
> Boiling meat is pretty much the worst way to prepare any cut of meat

Pulled chicken and pork would like to have a word. The trick is to let the meat cool down in the water after boiling so that it reabsorbs the fluid it lost. You get wonderfully tender and juicy pulled meat, plus a good stock. And the world of braising is a deep and delicious one. Not to mention meat-based stews, soups, and chowders. I’d suggest that if you hate meat that’s been boiled, it’s been from someone who doesn’t know how to do it. Which I mean not as a dig, but as a way of saying that there’s a lot of good cooking out there waiting to be discovered!

themeiguoren··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
Laughs in autocoded control systems
themeiguoren··on AirPods Max: An Audiophile Review
Not to mention even with the original comparison, AirPods + the case are 1/5 the material of a good pair of cans. Hell, even just the thick cord of nice headphones is the same amount of material as one set of airpods. Don’t like that you toss them every other year? Abstain from a bottle or two of beer and boom you’ve come out ahead in waste generation.
themeiguoren··on Open-source, not open-contribution
This is all true, I just wish that commits to my forks of dead/strict projects showed up on my activity graph. I’m strangely proud of that thing and half my work doesn’t end up on it because things are no longer maintained upstream. :/
