themaninthedark··on The treasury bond mess: is this the demise of the US as a safe haven?
"Except for the field organizers of strikes, who were pretty tough monkeys and devoted, most of the so-called Communists I met were middle-class, middle-aged people playing a game of dreams. themaninthedark··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
Don't know much about driver maintenance but if it is working why remove it?

What I read in the link was that it was removed because LLM was making suggestions to improve the code/bring it up to modern standards but since it was rarely used no-one wanted to review it not that it was buggy.

>In recent months we have seen a lot of old kernel code removed stemming from that AI/LLM noise.

This is the opposite of what my parent was hoping to see, extended support for old/obscure hardware because we have LLM.

There are a plethora of examples of slavery as well....

>The ways in which captives were treated differed widely among Native American groups. Captives could be enslaved for life, killed, or adopted. In some cases, captives were only adopted after a period of slavery. For example, the Iroquoian peoples (not just the Iroquois tribes) often adopted captives, but for religious reasons there was a process, procedures, and many seasons when such adoptions were delayed until the proper spiritual times.

>In the cultural practices of the Iroquoian peoples, also rooted in a matrilineal system with men and women having equal value, any child would have the status determined by the woman's clan. More typically, tribes took women and children captives for adoption, as they tended to adapt more easily into new ways.

themaninthedark··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Not sure exactly what the point of quoting Marx at me was supposed to be...

People need jobs and a functioning economy to live.

This thread started with the GGGP talking about the decline of Germany's economy contrasted by the meteoric rise of China.

GGP states it's capitalism's fault.

GP says even if Germany disappeared from the face of the earth the current emission levels wouldn't even notice.

My parent asked why GP was downplaying or ignoring and asked for a solution.

I provided one.

Quoting Marx is not a solution. One of the current largest polluting countries was founded in part according to Marxist ideas. Russia under the Soviets gave us Chernobyl and Lake Karachay they also continued to hunt whales far in excess of their international agreements well into the 1980s.

"As others exited the whaling industry, the Soviets, alongside the Japanese, helped reduce the world’s whales from imperiled to nearly extinct, doing the hard work of an annihilation that flew in the face of economic rationality. The Soviets were able to do this in part because of a planned economy that resisted market forces."

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/06/history-of-sovie...

So no, your economic ideology has nothing to do with your ecological ideology.

What is your solution?

themaninthedark··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
What is your solution to: >German economy is rocketing to the bottom, their industry is dying with thousands of layoffs, closing factories, and complains on energy prices and they can't even maintain their rail and road networks for the first time since forever.

Except for downplaying the problems or saying they have to suffer?

Mine is re-shore all industry so that products are made according to environmental, health & safety standards. Deploy a mix of renewable and also nuclear power.

themaninthedark··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Or you know, you could demand that the goods being imported are made to the same quality, environmental, health & safety standards as your home country.

But that would turn off the spigot of cheap goods.....

I don't think you have set foot in a factory recently.

Factory work isn't generally physically demanding, more tedious & repetitive than anything.

It's air conditioned, generally pays a lot more than minimum wage and has benefits.

themaninthedark··on The Vanishing Page: AI Firms Scan Then Destroy Rare Book Editions
But it's transformed now!

Edit(seriously): >Transformativeness is a characteristic of such derivative works that makes them transcend, or place in a new light, the underlying works on which they are based. In computer- and Internet-related works, the transformative characteristic of the later work is often that it provides the public with a benefit not previously available to it, which would otherwise remain unavailable.(Wikipedia)

I am sure Napster or the like argued that what they were doing was transformative.

Not sure how AI companies are arguing about PUBLIC benefit if you have to pay...

See, what you are missing is the games that would be played if they did a secret election.

I am not generally pro-union, I believe it has it's place but have also seen downsides but I have seen these games played out before.

themaninthedark··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
There are some who took this view when LEDs were first mandated. Light bulbs were dirt cheap, yes they use more electricity but their waste stream is glass with a bit of metal.

Now we pay more for something that lasts a bit longer with more waste.

It's not "capitalism" if the government mandates a product.

What you are seeing is the typical enshitification that occurs when a product becomes mass produced and low cost to the customers becomes the primary driver.

themaninthedark··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
I have not seen anyone arguing only nuclear to get rid of fossil fuels, what I see is people arguing that we need nuclear to supplement renewables to remove fossil fuel and the other side saying renewables and batteries(and maybe the occasional gas peaker plant or two...) or bust.

Sure they try to vet the app but how does that absolve me from the liability?

themaninthedark··on Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick
I think a law that makes a marketplace responsible for items being sold if the qty of items is above a threshold would be a great idea.

You don't want to penalize someone selling their Xbox or lawnmower on Ebay but you want to stop what is going on here. A place like Etsy where people are selling their crafts is an interesting edge case but I think they should probably be a little regulated.

themaninthedark··on RTX 2080 Ti Memory Upgrade to 22 GB
That's part of what I was thinking about, we have people with little/ low skills that we pay to do things that make no sense.

https://fortune.com/2025/05/18/gen-x-entrepreneur-line-sitti...

We can pay someone $20~60 an hour to stand in line for concert tickets and shoe drops but we can't get enough blue-collar workers to bring down housing prices.

NYC McDonald's pays $17~20 an hour...

Somewhere along the way, what we value for labor and what we work we are willing to do got very messed up.
