thejerz··on A Startup Shies Away from the Gig Economy
What is the average W2 salary of a Redfin agent? The NYT left this out.
thejerz··on Ask HN: What is your go-to example for a good REST API?
The JIRA API is pretty good.
thejerz··on Media Websites Battle Faltering Ad Revenue and Traffic
Is it possible your site just wasn't that good?
thejerz··on MacOS XI: It's time to take the next step (concept)
This is clickbait. There is nothing in here that comes (anywhere) close to XI -- at best, it's OS X 10.12. OS XI will be a paradigm shift -- the way that OS 9 to OS X was -- not just a slightly different UI, desktop picture, and icons.
thejerz··on Ask HN: What sucks in the project management software you use?
Jira: Complexity.

Basecamp: Not enough complexity.

Both: Pricing that isn't sensitive to smaller orgs.

thejerz··on Dropbox closing Carousel and Mailbox
Can someone in the HN community please just remake Sparrow? I'll give you my money right now.
thejerz··on Labella.js – placing labels on a timeline without overlap
Is there a way to lay out the nodes vertically instead of horizontally?
thejerz··on Pursuit of Serverless Architecture: What if we didn't need app servers anymore?
AWS Lambda is awesome -- for about a month, I was head over heels in love with it. However, the language support turns out to be a huge issue. If Javascript, Python, or Java 8 isn't the right tool for the job, you're stuck. I hear Go, and then Ruby, support is slated for 2016. I am optimistic that as time goes on, language and binary support will make this the future of computing.
thejerz··on Guide to Personal Productivity Methods
Beating procrastination is about changing a lot of small habits. The first change I'd recommend is to focus on one baby step at a time: http://www.maxims.us/take-baby-steps/

Once that becomes habitual, you may find the other Maxims on productivity to be relevant: http://www.maxims.us/topics/productivity/

thejerz··on Why I Quit Ordering from Uber-For-Food Startups
Let me stand up for Sprig. They have, in my opinion, found the holy grail of McDonalds meets Whole Foods. They are serving organic food from local farms, made by local chefs, with the lowest carbon footprint of anyone -- all in a form factor that people will actually use. That's why I favor their future over that of Pizza Hut, Postmates, Uber Eats, and even Josephine. Instead of looking for faults, I think they deserve a round of applause.
thejerz··on Didn’t Homejoy Shut Down?
While this is sleezy, and probably violating all sorts of copyright and fraud statutes, I have to commend the down-and-dirty hustle here.
thejerz··on Red Hat is buying Ansible
Ansible is a fantastic tool. I put it up there with Rails, Backbone, and jQuery. The shadow of Puppet and Chef is large, but many are starting to see the light.

I hope that Redhat will accelerate the growth of this very well engineered platform.

Congrats to the Ansible team!

thejerz··on Ask HN: How to Be a Good Technical Lead?
- Be flexible

- Prioritize everything

- Simplify code, processes, and infrastructure at every step

- Build a well-rounded, emotionally stable team

- Loosely follow scrum & agile

- Be realistic

- Be honest, even when it is inconvenient

- At the tech lead level, the most important skill is your own psychology. Hone your personality, establish work-life balance, and take some courses in positive psych

- Have an opinion

- Learn when to talk, when not to talk, when to put it in writing, and when not to put it in writing

- Adopt a "good enough, and let's move on" design approach

- Build strong relationships with non-technical management

thejerz··on Creator of 5-hour Energy Wants to Power Homes with Bikes
After you drink a 5-hour Energy, bicycling is effortless.
thejerz··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
Where do I download the petrol app?
thejerz··on Otto, the successor to Vagrant
Such as?
thejerz··on Otto, the successor to Vagrant
I agree, in spirit. Setting up an app server, a web server, a MySQL database, or a cron job is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. There are a lot of complex sysadmin tasks -- running a BIND server, an email server, a Cassandra cluster, etc. -- but that's not what the majority of developers are doing.
thejerz··on Otto, the successor to Vagrant
I love Vagrant. At this point, every repo I contribute to has a Vagrantfile. I've turned dozens of coworkers onto Vagrant. That said, I am not a fan of the full Hashicorp ecosystem. Reading through the Otto site, and comments on HN, my first reaction is that my favorite tool has been selected for planned obsolescence.
thejerz··on Ask HN: What are the tax implications of exercising startup options?
Many startups have a clause in their offer letter that promises to "recommend that N options be granted at the next board meeting." It's a formality, but it doesn't always happen. Make sure those options were actually granted before you think about how to exercise them.

What is it called?
thejerz··on How to Read in College
Skimmed it.
thejerz··on How to Read in College
Reading this reminds me how happy I am to be graduated.
thejerz··on The Infinite File Download
Someone, somewhere, is paying for this bandwidth...
thejerz··on [dead]
There are lots of subreddits that are less technical and less professional.
thejerz··on Ask HN: What will be the future for email?
Maybe this is the future.
