thehoff··on Ask HN: Are you ordering takeout? (U.S.)
We have a couple times this week. It sounds corny but we figure it’s our way to try and help out others.

We’ve asked delivery drivers to leave food on ground by door and we get it after they leave.

Any little bit helps I hope to at least some of these businesses afloat.

thehoff··on Impossible Pork
Not trying to be rude, but isn’t the point of the Impossible burger to be just like meat while not being meat?
thehoff··on A quarter of Alabamians live in homes without internet access

thehoff··on Boston’s Seaport District may be a testing ground for climate change adaptation
Some of these luxury properties are condos in already very tall buildings (see South Florida for this).

And what happens when the first floor of your building is now under water? Sure your 30th floor condo is safe but is it really practical to live there at that point?

thehoff··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Firefox does have sync and it supposedly does all that. I use Firefox but don't use sync.

thehoff··on Filing Your Taxes Is an Expensive Time Sink. That’s Not an Accident
Planet Money just did a story on this, someone in California tried to get Ready Return passed (which does almost what you're stating). It didn't pass by one vote.

thehoff··on Half of Older Americans Have Nothing in Retirement Savings
Adding our kid to our health insurance (through employer) added $300 a month. Trying to be responsible and saving for college adds $100 a month.

Kid is too young to stay at home by himself and we don't live by family. So we pay for before/after care (school hours are from 9-3:30). This is astonishingly $600 a month, a relatively cheap option around here (there's cheaper but not by much).

thehoff··on A record 7M Americans are 3 months behind on their car payments
Our first two we only kept five years, bought new too. After we got older and smarter about buying cars, our last two were bought used. One is now 13 years old and the other is 3. We hope to run both into the ground, which may be a while (thankfully).
thehoff··on Ask HN: How do you get over the initial fear of learning something hard or new?
Right in line with my thinking.

While I'm not a developer, I wanted to learn Python for various reasons. Instead of just learning ALL OF PYTHON, I broke it down to little projects, learning how to do those projects along the way. While still no expert, I can at least handle what I set out to do.

I'd also add immersion, if that's what you would call it. Not really related, but I used to never watch sports, up until the start of this NBA season. I subscribed to podcasts and newsletters and found some sites to read daily. In the beginning I probably knew 5-10% of what was being talked about. But after some months of this I can probably digest a good 70-80%.

thehoff··on People are keeping their cell phones a lot longer
I was going to hold onto mine for another year at least but the camera doesn't seem to work as of two weeks ago. I held out for 11.1 hoping it was a weird bug but that didn't do it. Must be hardware. Camera won't focus half the time and in video it won't stabilize at all.
thehoff··on Forgetting a Child in a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (2009)
Some GPS's have a specific chime and reminder for this when you get to your location if you enable the setting.

Same here.
thehoff··on Why I lift
I just got back from the gym a little while ago ending my third week of this program:

https://www.julian.com/learn/muscle/intro

It's been great and I actually look forward to going now. I spend 45min to an hour there so it doesn't take up a ton of time.

I want to move on to SL5x5 after this one but go to my apartment gym which does not have a barbell. Any suggestions/comments about a smith machine (which it does have) and/or dumbbells?

thehoff··on Ask HN: What is the real Value of Real Estate Agent?
When we bought a place years ago we used an agent. He didn't do much in finding the place for us. We did most of that legwork (using realtor.com, zillow, and trulia). We'd call him up with a short list of places we wanted to see and he opened the doors for us. So not much value add there.

But he really earned his money by giving us advice on places we looked at (ie. "that doesn't look right, or this neighborhood may not be a great fit for you", etc). We looked at a lot of places. He also gave us advice when it came to closing. We walked from the first house we put a bid on after inspection gave us a pit in our stomachs. And he waived our inspection costs (he ate it) so it didn't cost us anything.

When we did buy a place he really made it happen and really helped us through all the paperwork (we didn't have the strongest offer).

When we sold our place several years later we used a different agent and she helped us move it in under 2 weeks. I really think it was her connections in finding a buyer that moved it so quickly as the first weekend she showed it (through private showings) we had multiple offers. She helped us look through all of them explaining and pointing out things we would never have noticed. And she definitely didn't push us in any direction, not even to the largest one (we went with a middle of the pack one passing up on another 15k). And I don't think it was solely the housing market we were in.

A lot of money for both agents there but in our eyes they both earned it.

thehoff··on SwatchOS: Not a Smart Decision
I had the Pebble until they were absorbed and my watch just started having all kinds of issues. Replaced it with the Forerunner 630 (for a steal at $200).

While not really a smartwatch (its geared towards runners) it does what I want. Notifications, vibrating alarm, customizable faces, tracks my steps, tracks my sleeping.

And it can go at least 12 days off a charge if just doing the above (no GPS tracking). I charged at 30% so you could probably get another 4-5 days out of that 30%.

thehoff··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again. Neither should you
Sure does, though my post was leaning towards leaving it at home so not resetting it (and thus not being able to login to at a kiosk).

But this also raises the question of them believing me that I can't login because I don't know my password.

thehoff··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again. Neither should you
I also wonder if this will have an impact on the camera market as I'm sure there are more like me who no longer own a separate photo/video camera.
thehoff··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again. Neither should you
If you have 2FA then some of those accounts may not be accessible without your phone. For instance, if I didn't bring my phone with me (which I use to authenticate) I wouldn't even be able to log in to my email.

Or, taken a little further, I don't even know my email password anyways. Its locked in a password manager which requires 2FA. I would myself be locked out of almost all of my accounts if I didn't bring my phone.

thehoff··on Ask HN: Great online forums?
http://arstechnica.com/civis/ which I've lurked on since its inception and have always liked it.
thehoff··on Tesla Model S battery bursts into flames, car “totally destroyed” in 5 minutes
Another anecdote, many years ago we had a friend who bought a Ford Focus as her first car out of college. While parked at a traffic light the car started fire (this was straight from the dealer on her way home). She got out and called the dealer from across the street watching it go up in flames. She got a new Focus with more bells and whistles than her original.

thehoff··on Ars Technica founder on the AR-15
I liked the article and have more of an appreciation for those that enjoy guns. For myself I never understood why people would need or want anything more than a small pistol, which this opened my eyes to the other side.

But serious question (and apologies if I missed it), what is wrong with making it harder to buy a gun? Is it true that I could go to a gun show and pretty much walk out with one that same day? What is wrong with just having a more stringent background check and/or classes before one can own a gun? (This may be the case in some states).

thehoff··on Why I have finally taken off the Apple Watch
I've had my Pebble Time for about six months now and really like it (previously lifelong owners of basic $25 Timex watches). It does what I want and isn't overly complicated.

Mainly got it because the 6s+ is just too big for my pockets so ends up being left on the desk (at work) or counter (at home) a lot more than the 5s I had and I wanted to get notifications for various apps/calls for these times.

thehoff··on Mercedes Boots Robots from the Production Line
My takeaway:

They are removing robots that are cordoned off into areas to keep workers safe. These robots are not very good at customizing/changing quickly.

What they are being replaced with is people and much smaller robots that work side-by-side with those people. Assisting more than trying to do it all.

thehoff··on Israeli soldiers who relied on Waze blundered into a deadly firefight
That's a somewhat misleading headline.

From the article:

Agence France-Presse quoted a Waze official as saying the device setting to warn about areas “dangerous or prohibited for Israelis to drive through” was off.

“In this case, the setting was disabled. In addition, the driver deviated from the suggested route and, as a result, entered the prohibited area,” the official told the news agency.

thehoff··on P&G’s Gillette Sues Dollar Shave Club
I'm in the opposite camp. I tried Harry's. Twice. A year apart. Couldn't stand the blades. Poor shave and somewhat hurt. I do somewhat like their shave cream though but that's pricey to what I can find elsewhere.

I now alternate between Dorco and a safety razor.

thehoff··on Show HN: Curiosity, a context-aware Wikipedia reader for iPhone
After a phone restart all is well now. Nice clean app that will definitely a new go-to when trying to kill a few minutes (ie. waiting in a line).

I thought it would be cool if you could go to other cities and see what article pop up there, but then noticed you have that already!

thehoff··on Show HN: Curiosity, a context-aware Wikipedia reader for iPhone
Great idea, I even went to the store and purchased it (I'm that guy, the one that never buys apps).

Alas, the app won't open, it keeps crashing upon startup (6s+) so I can't even play with it.
