thegayngler··on Cutting your salary by 40%
I live and work in NYC and several of the companies I've worked for have never required more than 40 hours a week for work. In fact, if you did work long hours they would give you a day off or let you take extra vacation time like say taking a month long vacation to make up for it. You run someone into the ground then that person has health issues or leaves. Tech companies in NYC are very good about not having people work overtime. Even some older companies I've worked at like NYT and Reuters have great time off policies. I know for awhile Reuters had work from home Fridays.

All their business knowledge goes out the door with them. You end up wasting time with the hiring process and then finally hiring someone who costs more money who doesn't understand your business at all and won't be really able to contribute at a high level for 6 months while getting up to speed.

thegayngler··on Cutting your salary by 40%
I know many people who work lots of hours and the result isn't necessarily good. Those hard workers get lucky some of the time...but much of the time its all show and no substance. Pumping out all that poorly designed brittle code is not helping anyone. You can do a 70 hour week here and there but you can't sustain it long term without negative consequences. It's best to save your 70hr work week energy for when it's actually necessary than it being a regular thing.

In fact even when looking at myself, many times I was "working" lots of hours but in reality I wasn't getting anything done. When I work 40 or less hours and take lots of breaks during the day I got way more done than when I had just been a seat warmer for 70+ hours per week. This is likely due to the fact that having rest periods and breaks allow my brains diffuse mode to also help solve problems. Many of my best ideas come when I'm lifting or playing basketball at the gym.

You are not getting the best version of a person when they chose to work lots of hours and refuse to take time out for themselves. Our brains need plenty of rest in order to function optimally.

Bitmoji is about to get a major boost. I love that app. Imagine what you could do with that using the AI/AR/ML stuff...
thegayngler··on Credit Karma to launch free ID monitoring following Equifax hack
I think Equifax, Transunion, and Experion should be blocked from accessing a person's information unless they explicitly authorized by the person.

There needs to be more transparency into the storing of personal information and the whole process of credit scoring an individual for the purposes of the borrowing they wish to do. This is a service that should be free. Why should people be paying to access their own information? That's just weird. The lenders are the ones who should be financing the credit scoring industry.

thegayngler··on iPhone X
I wasn't really excited about AI and ML until I saw this iPhone X and the stuff they were doing with the Animojis and the Facial Recognition Tech. Whew! I may have to study AI/ML
thegayngler··on Coding Boot Camps Get the Boot: Why the Industry Is Shutting Down
These bootcamps are too basic for starters. They never take you beyond the basics. Secondly, the industry has changed. You need to know more things than you did previously. Even computer science grads aren't necessarily "ready" for the workforce. Education is behind in general instead of ingrained into the community with which it wishes to operate. They are always lagging behind or even way behind.

On some level I feel as though businesses need to get real and just pick someone for the job even entry level. There is nothing wrong with a business investing in its talent rather than expecting everyone to come in with prepackaged with everything you want them to know. Most of the people hiring these days didn't know how to do any of the stuff people are doing when they come out of bootcamp when they started their careers.

thegayngler··on The fertility of the older mind
Yep. It is all in our heads.
thegayngler··on Ask HN: How do you pivot your career when jobs want years of exp in a stack
I guess I'm different in that I care that people understand the pluses and minuses of the various frameworks. I think anyone can pick up a framework or solve a problem. However, can they understand why and when to use x framework to solve a problem and back up why they chose to solve the problem in the way they chose to do it.

Additionally I want someone who can be passionate about the tech stack and frameworks they are using or plan on using. Otherwise, I've got a code monkey who may get things done in the short term but their code and problem solving abilities actually has negative implications in the future when it comes time for maintenance and to add additional features to things.

I don't understand why people label others who care about their craft and the tools they use as junior/midlevel. I think that's lazy. Many times there really is a best way to solve a problem or a best framework for your particular situation or problem. All engineers should care about the tools and what is being used and why it's being used.

I guess its just not enough for me to have an answer so much as to understand why its the answer and under what conditions assumptions can fail. To me that is more valuable when hiring someone who is switching careers than being able to solve a problem in a generic sense.

thegayngler··on Why I left
I didn't get that based on the fact that he moved to a whole other place where he felt safe. No one goes through that kind of hassle without having a good reason. His later actions justify or make me believe his story about the assault.

This sounds awesome. Definitely going to check it out. Thanks for this post.
thegayngler··on iOS 11 Safari will automatically strip AMP links from shared URLs
Im in the camp that also hates AMP with a passion. It feels weird not liking much of what Google has been doing lately but AMP for me gets in the way of me sharing articles with my friends and family. It also gets in the way of me sharing a clip of the text so the people I'm sharing with including myself have the proper link and some context to get them to read further.
thegayngler··on Chrome Enterprise
I actually agree with this. I'd be too concerned about if Google or a Google AI bot randomly decided to deactivate or delete my work life. As a company what recourse would you have? I'd also be concerned about losing work and trade secrets etc... Yeah no. Just no.
thegayngler··on Statistics Professor Just Banned by Google: Here Is His Story
What if you have your Android Phone tied to their services etc and this is the way Google behaves. This type of unexplained behavior from Google could literally ruin someone's life.
thegayngler··on Statistics Professor Just Banned by Google: Here Is His Story
This story is making me reconsider my allegiance to Google Email and other services. For my more private stuff I use other services. I only use Gmail for junk like I used to use Hotmail back in the day. My Gmail was compromised at least twice.
thegayngler··on Vue.js and Brunch: Webpack Alternative
Yeah I think that is a concern for many people around building an app with React and friends. I've heard people complaining on this issue multiple times at work.

My dad, my sister and I don't like to keep stuff around that is not being used. We will keep the stuff we have as long as it makes sense to but we don't believe having more stuff is good. We think living a minimalist lifestyle is the way to live.
thegayngler··on DOJ Demands Files on Anti-Trump Activists, and DreamHost Resists
This is not true. Sexual orientation is not a protected class in the constitution. I hate it but that's the facts.
thegayngler··on Sundar Pichai Should Resign as Google’s C.E.O
I'm sure that is part of the hiring disparity among females and underrepresented minorities. As a black guy myself, I know the same is true among black people who simply aren't interested in engineering but Damon makes weird ability judgements based on the population.

This makes no sense as people with different interests would never bother in the first place no matter how much time and money you threw at them. So again I say why bring up the upstream problem to begin with as it being related to their abilities for engineering?

IMO, the only way his text makes sense is if you are someone looking to back up potentially racist and sexist biases by misusing science. It makes me question their ability to work with people different than themselves.

With that said I'm actually torn on the issue of the firing. Google says its a place for diversity of opinion etc etc...So on some level they should stick by it.

However, I understand why the firing may have needed to be done. The fact that a low level employee made the news for being controversial means you have to be fired. You can't send a memo out like that and expect there to be no career consequences at your company of employment. You will never be able to live it down.

thegayngler··on Sundar Pichai Should Resign as Google’s C.E.O
Note to engineers. If you put your employer in a damned if you do damned if you don't legal situation, you will be fired and should be fired. Why is that so hard for everyone to understand? David Brooks should know this as he has worked at a big company for awhile now. No matter what Google did there would be people who were angry.
thegayngler··on Sundar Pichai Should Resign as Google’s C.E.O
> ...but he was careful to say that properties of large populations don't apply on the level of an individual or selected group.

Then why bring it up if what he says doesn't matter within the context in which they are hiring people. Google isn't hiring people on a population basis. They are hiring people on an individual basis.

thegayngler··on Sundar Pichai Should Resign as Google’s C.E.O
There was an article awhile back in the NYT stating that in many cases asians people can be found cheating on those tests or lying about their educational background.

Lets face it. They have resources to both cheat and get tutoring on the ways to pass an exam. Lets see how everyone does cold turkey when all of the outside factors like money and resources other than race and gender are held constant.

What are the results of a study like that? That would be a more interesting test than saying X or Y is genetically more suited to this field.

Most if not all of that line of reasoning is based on 1000 year old social constructs...and the mountains of "research" that was later made up to give it credibility when people started to question these social constructs.

thegayngler··on [dead]
Have to agree with the article somewhat. Its very difficult to be great at every part of the stack. Big companies require this as their applications last longer than the usual startups. Backend developers think they are full stack if they can throw HTML and JavaScript on the page. The current state of things is that the front end of things is way more complex and having to consider user interactions ends up being as hard as throwing crud together.

On the other side of things, I know Frontend developers who wouldn't dare touch the backend for any reason. So A full stack developer for most companies someone who is willing to do back and front end development if they have to in order to ship a product.

For myself, if I don't like the backend stack I'll stick to the Frontend of things as that is what I specialize in. If the backend stack looks interesting to me then I'll want to work in it. Fortunately, I got a job at a company who can offer me a stack Im interested in on both the front and back ends.

thegayngler··on Atom 1.19 – Improved Responsiveness and Memory Usage
The VIM plugin in VSCode is atrocious. I use VIM a lot so I'll be going back to ATOM after today's non-sense. FYI, Ive been using VSCode for several weeks. I also like the settings UI better and the packages and themes UI better in ATOM.

thegayngler··on How to make a friend fast
Have you ever thought that maybe you may be the one with the personality problem? Why would anyone assume the worst of someone else trying to make a good impression on them?

I just try to be as much of myself as I can. No use trying to please people looking to find offense. It's exhausting worrying all of the time about what other people think. It's easier for me to just be myself and make no apologies for it. If they like me great. If they don't, that is fine too. Can't please everyone and don't have the time to focus on pleasing everyone.

Additionally, I am perfectly happy if someone thinks I'm important enough to them that they need to sell themselves to me or would even want to put in the effort to build a personal relationship with me.

thegayngler··on I'm not a Woman in Tech
As a black man I am going to disagree with some of what she said even if I can relate on some level. You need support when you are hired especially as an "under represented" person. If the company didn't think you needed support they simply wouldn't be offering it. Most of the "not under represented" people have support that helps them become more successful.
