thegayngler··on How to Make a Big Decision
I generally just start down my favorite path and then use the additional data to decide if I should switch paths or make that 51st path that I didn't think about when I had less data to go off of. Being flexible has generally worked in my favor.
thegayngler··on The Bullshit Web
Yes because the signs people put around the "native ads" literally stating that it's an "ad" or "sponsored content" are easily ignorable. Get real. People pay for a newspaper with ads in it. You still have to sift through it. Ignore it? You literally have to turn the page or spend 5 minutes pulling the ads out of the newspaper if you don't want them and in some cases there isn't a way to escape the ad with print because part of the article is there with the ad. Ad block won't save you then.
thegayngler··on The Bullshit Web
I agree in theory. However, I haven't noticed the slowness in their website and the ads are well done and blend in with the webpage. They may have to redesign/rearchitect their whole website to get what you are asking for.

It should be noted that traditional newspapers include ads alongside news content and no one complains. In fact people used to sift through the Sunday NYT simply for the ads.

thegayngler··on The Average Age and Years Served of Members of US Congress Every Year Since 1789
I think term limits are the answer here. Twelve years is plenty for a congressman or senator.
thegayngler··on Swift for TensorFlow Design Overview
I was starting to use Kitura but it seems the community is more in favor of Vapor right now. I moved on to Vapor as a result. IBM seems like it might abandon the project like they did their Swift Packages website.
thegayngler··on Giving Up on the Current MacBook Pro Keyboard
I guess Ive been lucky. I have avoided any keyboard issues with my rMBP w/TB. I love the keyboard. I wish it worked well for everyone else.
thegayngler··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
Agreed. They say here’s your $250 training budget and leave you to it...thinking they really did something.
thegayngler··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
Of course you want the best you can get. I’m arguing 10x is constantly influx for any number of reasons. So it’s unlikely you’ll get one. If you have a process for making engineers into the best then you don’t need to look for the unlikely 10x because you can make them into the 10x high performers you need.

Ive seen companies literally turn good engineers into underperforming engineers...stifling them with process, tech debt, politics, etc... Then they get angry some people can perform and others can’t under the circumstances and conditions the management created.

I’ve watched perfectly good engineers get fired or forced out for not being miracle workers only for people to later realize there was nothing wrong with the engineer in the first place.

You don’t know who is going to be the best until you work with them. I would advise people to pick people they will like even under the worst of conditions and train them to the way you want them to be.

thegayngler··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
Most engineers would not hire themselves. That has been apparent to me for awhile now. I’m not sure why they expect people to be to be better than they were when they were hired. I don’t expect engineers to be better than me. I have but one qualification. Can they do the job? Are they strong enough that I can guide them into the position I need them at if it is required.

So much focus has been put on 10x this and high performing that. Companies waste lots of engineering talent and company money looking for 10x when 10x is mostly situational in nature. Set the scene. In one scene the engineers are not producing. Change the scene and now they are 10x.

Instead of looking for 10x, that time would be better spent making incoming and current engineers better at their jobs and creating 10x situations.

Id say recertification is an option as time passes. It keeps people up to date and on their toes.

thegayngler··on Why New York City Stopped Building Subways
Doesn't the government subsidize these businesses while construction goes on? I guess I was under the impression they would be subsidized.
thegayngler··on Why New York City Stopped Building Subways
Isn't this temporary? The government should be concerned with the long term benefit to the city overall. The businesses that come in afterwards would likely benefit from subway access.
thegayngler··on Zuckerberg on Cambridge Analytica situation
Sorry I'm a fan of FB. I use many of the tools they've provided to the open source world.

I know this won't be a popular opinion but I'd welcome some regulation and bureaucracy for technology firms. This way there wouldn't be this weird gray/imaginary line situation going on that we have right now. I think Congress should probably outsource the regulation and bureaucracy similar to how the SEC works...but maybe not tied to the POTUS and instead creating a structure outside the purview of the POTUS.

thegayngler··on Smart Guy Productivity Pitfalls (2013)
This is me right now. I want to work on more go projects but I need to complete this legacy backbone javascript project that hasn't been touched in like two years....The code I'm working on right now is pretty notorious even to other teams.

thegayngler··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
I'm not so sure of anything. That's the way it looks to me from reading the article. The way it looks to me from reading the article is that these employees were labeled as underperforming simply so the company could avoid triggering any sort of legal scrutiny. I could be totally wrong. It's likely that I'm not considering people walked in without any PEP or any notice and were let go even according to another poster on HN.
thegayngler··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
So basically what you have is Musk over promising and under delivering but it's the worker's fault he could not meet unrealistic deadlines he set himself ignoring all reality.

Musk set Tesla up for failure and now the non-management people have to suffer as a result. The fact that this is even being talked about right now may hurt Tesla's chances of hiring great future employees...especially with that scathing article basically saying they were being fired for bad performance and not laid off.

Can you still get unemployment if you are fired for unsatisfactory performance?

thegayngler··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
I agree they are scapegoats for bad management. They should start firing the CEO. He over promises and then grossly under delivers. Making people work in bad conditions will turn good people into bad employees/DEAD weight. They were DEAD weight because people need rest and time away from work to maintain optimal performance.
thegayngler··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
I don't know how much of this I agree with but I definitely agree with most of it. I also hadn't considered the fact that we have forced businesses into the role of government because our government is underperforming.
thegayngler··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
The result was failure. Now we are approaching two failures with other people's money. He has these lofty ideas and unrealistic promises none of which he can deliver on. It's almost like he's an underperforming employee.

I’d argue that it should be a system where any number of companies can compete in the credit reporting industry. Why should it be only 3 companies competing?

The laws need more fleshing out. The current iteration of laws is insufficient.

thegayngler··on China Makes Chat Group Administrators Criminally Liable for Unlawful Messages
It really can. That's what it is supposed to do. However, some companies don't wish to associate with certain speech. That's as much their right to free speech as anyone else's right to free speech. You can create your own stuff and no one is stopping them. From a government perspective you have free speech. No business has to sponsor your speech if it offends them or hurts their business.
