theflyinghorse··on U.S. jobs disappear at fastest January pace since great recession
Tariffs, forcing capital into 7 very large companies instead of small startups, wage suppression through weird offshoring and immigration schemes so on and so forth. There are seemingly unending number of issues that all contribute to the same outcome we're seeing today.
theflyinghorse··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
Workflow is this: - I have emacs open for code editing/reviews/git. - Separate terminal emulator with 1-3 claudes - I work on a story by splitting it into small steps ("Let's move this email logic to the email.service.ts", "here's the fields I'd need to add to the request, create a schema validation in a separate file, and update the router and controller") - I mostly watch claude, and occasionally walk through the code in emacs whenever I feel like I want to review code. - I handle external tools like git or db migrations myself not letting LLMs near them.

In essence, this is pretty much how you'd run a group of juniors - you'd sit on slack and jira diving up work and doing code reviews.

theflyinghorse··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
Questioning immigration policy is not racism. Anti-Indian sentiment in Canada is relatively recent and happened after a decade of mass immigration that is now widely agreed has contributed to a noticeable decline in the quality of life for all.
theflyinghorse··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
India as a whole is diverse. Canada is NOT getting immigrants from all of India but rather from 2 states (mostly one). Please learn about the issue first.
theflyinghorse··on The C3 Programming Language
I keep thinking about perhaps LLMs would make writing code in these lower-level-but-far-better-performing languages in vogue. Why have claude generate a python service when you could write a rust or C3 service with compiler doing a lot of heavy lifting around memory bugs?
theflyinghorse··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
What are the chances that Google leadership even seen GCP interface outside of a demo once a never?
theflyinghorse··on Django 6
This is generally true of all of these frameworks: Django, Laravel, rails, phoenix
theflyinghorse··on Microsoft drops AI sales targets in half after salespeople miss their quotas
Problem with "it will hurt" is that it will actually hurt middle class by completely wiping it out, and maybe slightly inconvenience the rich. More like annoy the rich, really.
theflyinghorse··on Anthropic acquires Bun
Congratulations to the bun team!
theflyinghorse··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
Reminds me of Blindsight by Peter Watts. Aliens viewed our radio signals as a type of malware aimed to consume the resources of a recipient for zero payoff and reduced fitness. This is the same.
theflyinghorse··on An Economy of AI Agents
Yeah, that’s well articulated and well reasoned. Unfortunately, so long as in some way these agents are able to make money for the owner the argument is totally moot. You cannot expect capitalists to think of anything other than profit in the next quarter or quarter after that
theflyinghorse··on Google Antigravity
I couldn't get it to work on M1 mac. it spins forever on login screen.
theflyinghorse··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
Using tabs requires so much discipline imo. I just end up having 2000 tabs open, and so I chose to not have tabs at all.
theflyinghorse··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
Let's be brutally honest. Big part of choosing tech has to do with the fact that I want to be able to be paid. If react is popular and has some potential for earning me money, then react it is.
theflyinghorse··on Bare Metal (The Emacs Essay)
Vibing. It's a state of zen and connection to the technology that you use.
theflyinghorse··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
Mint is great! I've been using it for years, everything just works out of the box
theflyinghorse··on Emacs agent-shell (powered by ACP)
I've spent 2 month trying out emacs and I feel like I sort of scratched the surface. It's like the deeper you look the more you realize how much more there is
theflyinghorse··on Emacs agent-shell (powered by ACP)
It's the emacs way - emacs eats the world
theflyinghorse··on Top Programming Languages 2025
More Java than C++ in my opinion. And, get this, JS! We shall see how far OpenFin will actually go in that space because they will potentially drive a ton of JS across orgs in finance
theflyinghorse··on Top Programming Languages 2025
They are just different. I mean, setting up monorepo is far easier with maven over npm. Besides, maven offers basically cookie cutter project organization where every maven project looks like every other maven project. As for other tooling JVM is just better than JS ecosystem. Definitely more complex, but also more powerful
theflyinghorse··on Java 25 officially released
You still have to test everything.
theflyinghorse··on Java 25 officially released
Can't wait to have a job migrating an application from 17 to java 25 in 10 years!
theflyinghorse··on Many hard LeetCode problems are easy constraint problems
Yes. Common LC patterns such as 1D and 2D dynamic programming. I'm not defending leetcode style interviews, in fact I think they are actually bad, I'm simply stating their intent as observed by me.

In my notes I have roughly 30 patterns to leetcode questions btw.

theflyinghorse··on Many hard LeetCode problems are easy constraint problems
The point is to test whether or not you put in the time to sharpen common patterns and also to test your communication ability
theflyinghorse··on Neovim Pack
You're using an editor that is built to be configurable for people who enjoy endless configuration. This will not be the last config manager. You might as well ask JS community if Nextjs is the last JS framework
theflyinghorse··on Next.js is infuriating
Best explanation of spring I have ever read.

And while Spring has it's rough edges and quirks it is still an incredibly stable framework. Next, on the other hand, is a box of surprises that keeps on giving even when you think you saw it all.

theflyinghorse··on Why is it worth spending time on type theory? (2013)
Not heavy on jargon? Compared to what? It’s all jargon
theflyinghorse··on Microsoft tops $4T in valuation: Great news for MSFT, not so great for workers
In this economy the calculus will be “hold on to your job at all costs and hope that next round of quarterly layoffs hiring doesn’t touch you”
theflyinghorse··on Women dating safety app 'Tea' breached, users' IDs posted to 4chan
I don't think you understand humans. Spicy social gossip is far more attractive to people rather than anything informative.
