thedragonline··on Ask HN: Looking for research done with shallow CNNs and lo-res data
I’m looking for actual research. I’m wrapping up some work on a stripped-down version of the lenet architecture and extemely low resolution non-representational data (3x3 greyscale pixels). The results appear to be better than chance and I’m quite frankly stunned - I expected complete garbage. Maybe I’ve missed something, but if the results are simply due to chance, I had an utterly extraordinary case of bad luck. (edit:clarity)
thedragonline··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
Matches my experience as well. It was a great language for experimenting with UI design (itemrenderers anyone?). It’s a bitter pill for me swallow to have to watch it fade away.
thedragonline··on U.S. Economy Shrinks at 4.8% Pace, Signaling Start of Recession
If you research the history, you discover that the 401k was designed for the C-suite, not ordinary workers. Some calculating Wall Streeter(s) somewhere decided that it's a reasonable retirement vehicle for ordinary shlubs. It is not. See this: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/teresa-ghilarducc...

Doubt it. Money velocity has been steadily dropping since the mid-90s. Take a look at this chart from the St. Louis Fed: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M2V My guess is that it will be absolutely crushed when Covid-19 finally shows up in the chart.

thedragonline··on Goodbye, Flash
The triumphalist note in many of these posts makes me sad. Flash had a ton of warts, yeah I get that. But there is a failure to acknowledge the collateral damage done to Actionscript that I find troubling. Itemrenderers, the ability to inline functions in MXML components and a decent OO framework gave me a powerful platform for rapidly iterating UI designs. The tools I currently use just don't measure up (I'm looking at you, C#) and it's left a bitter taste in my mouth.
thedragonline··on The most successful people are just the luckiest, a new computer model confirms
It’s a model. All models are wrong, some are useful. That the models’ wealth distribution correlates well with the real world is an interesting fact and strongly suggests further investigation. Edit:grammar
thedragonline··on Tim Cook’s Message to 2019 Graduates: ‘My Generation Has Failed You’
>I am loathe to support the attempted destruction of capitalism based on unreliable computer models.

That's a whopper. Have you worked with modelled climate data for any length of time? Or at all? In a past life, I became intimately familiar with the A1B1 data from half a dozen institutions. Collectively they did NOT present a pretty picture. IIRC by about 2050 climate change will really start to bite and make life miserable for us humans. But even if those models are hopelessly wrong (which I doubt), isn't it worth taking a conservative tack anyway with regard to the environment? Or should we just gamble with the future and hope that our energy intensive ways do not result, for example, in systemic crop failure that, in turn, leads to capitalism's self-immolation.

thedragonline··on TurboTax Hides Its Free File Page from Search Engines
When most are sitting in the long tail of wealth/income distributions, then maybe is the likelier answer.

I turned down contract work from a well-known telecom. The pay was great, unfortunately for them, I have no interest in helping them destroy your privacy. Of course, if I were desperate and had no runway, that would likely change the calculus. UBI would be a godsend in this regard.
thedragonline··on What I Learned in My First Year Year as a Solo Founder
I'm guessing the tkinter tooling that comes with Python.
thedragonline··on Microsoft confirms new Windows 7 monthly charge for updates
FWIW I've done some limited consulting work with senior citizens. Two observations: A) they like their systems the way they are, so changes of any kind (especially to the UI) are upsetting/unpleasant experiences, B) they are on fixed incomes so hardware/software upgrades that cost more than some de minimis amount are put off / ignored. My prediction - this cohort is going to get slammed at that EOL date.

I’m sure blackhats will be rubbing their hands in glee when this day comes.
thedragonline··on Terry Davis has died
Watching him drop undecorated assembly code into his Holy C editor and then wrap it in a for loop was an eye-opener for me. Even more interesting was the one-line function call with a sprite object argument that is 'printed' in the console. Thought-provoking to say the least.

9:20 mark. It's Terry so the language is NSFW.

RIP

thedragonline··on Does China’s digital police state have echoes in the West?
Don’t discount desperation. I can very easily imagine a struggling programmer who has the choice of putting food on the table or going without. The felon programmer who posted to HN several months ago falls into this category.
