thedougd··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
Replied at the same time as you. I agree. In Safari there’s ton of space on each side of the URL bubble yet I only get about 7 chara visible.

I have an iPhone 13 and haven’t noticed. Don’t love it though.

The safari changes are the worst part.

thedougd··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
Exactly the route I took. I had an aging tower machine full of spinning disks running on an old LSI adapter that was doing hardware raid. They were out of space and I began to get nervous the LSI adapter could die and I would trouble replacing it. Decided JBOD for the future.

External drives were on sale, I bought several and setup with a RPI. Lots of headaches. It took effort to iron out all the USB and external disk issues. Had to work out alternative boot. Had power adapters fail for the RPI. Had to enhance cooling. etc. Kept running into popular Docker containers still not having aarch64 variants.

I finally replaced the RPI with a used Dell SFF. Kept the USB drives and it's been solid with similar power draw and just easier to deal with all around.

Though I am considering going back to a tower, shucking the drives (they're out of warranty) and going back to SATA.

thedougd··on The AI bubble is 17 times the size of the dot-com frenzy, analyst says
I don't know if we're in a bubble, but I'm a bit baffled at the lack of AI in my personal life. Where are all the consumer products?

Where I use it outside of work:

- Product review summarizations (Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, etc)

- Search summarization (top of DuckDuckGo, Google, etc)

- Chat (eg ChatGPT. Better Search, Q&A)

It's not on my TV, barely on my iPhone, not in my smart home, just generally not much of a presence for me outside of work. Why isn't it changing my life yet? Or perhaps the average persons?

thedougd··on The AI bubble is 17 times the size of the dot-com frenzy, analyst says
This happened to me at or near a similar size project. I tried the same project again with Vibe coding but used some very different approaches. Far from a home run on the second try, but it was a much more manageable and maintenable project than my first attempt. I'm still skeptical and presently subscribe to the opinion that AI is a multiplier for skilled, competent engineers but a potential detriment to inexperienced.
thedougd··on Potential issues in curl found using AI assisted tools
You sound at least somewhat experienced. You knew you wanted an SVG and that Javascript could be inserted into it. That's a pretty reasonable design starting point.
thedougd··on ChatGPT Developer Mode: Full MCP client access
OpenAI is requiring a "search" and "fetch" tool in their specification. Requiring specific tools seems counter to the spirit of MCP. Imagine if every major player had their own interop tool specification.
thedougd··on ABC yanks Jimmy Kimmel’s show ‘indefinitely’ after threat from FCC chair
Unlikely they’d want to politicize the canceling of their show. Quiet and uncontroversial is better for ABC.
thedougd··on The PC was never a true 'IBMer'
2010's would have been too late to see those things. Wrt PCs, the PC company sale was complete and IIRC Lenovo was no longer even sharing space with IBM.
thedougd··on NPM debug and chalk packages compromised
It was a pain in the ass but I always appreciated that Maven central required packages to be signed with a public key pre-associated with the package name.
thedougd··on Will Amazon S3 Vectors kill vector databases or save them?
HIPAA services are not separate. You only need to establish a Business Associations Addendum (BAA) with AWS and stick to HIPAA eligible services: https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/hipaa-eligible-services-re...

GovCloud exists so that AWS can sell to the US government and their contractors without impacting other customers who have different or less stringent requirements.

I see the same with Playwright MCP server with Claude Sonnet 4.
thedougd··on Electric cars produce far less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Aren’t higher speed rated tires softer? Maybe try swapping for a lower speed rating unless they plan on driving it at extreme speeds.

thedougd··on IKEA ditches Zigbee for Thread going all in on Matter smart homes
Yes, local control is a key feature as well as multi-controller.
thedougd··on IKEA ditches Zigbee for Thread going all in on Matter smart homes
The thread border gateway (Apple TV, HomePod, Google Nest Speaker, etc) sends an IPv6 router advertisement to the network for the Thread IP space. Multiple border gateways can advertise the same IP space for redundancy.

I have/had a segmented network, so I made sure my router accepted this route so that devices on different networks could communicate with the Thread devices. It worked, usually. However, I ran into some challenges with the reliability of communicating from my phone to various devices. I never quite got mDNS reflection 100% correct, and I strongly suspect that's my problem. If you look at an mDNS entry for a device, you'll see some advertise all their IPv6 addresses including link local (fe80::). I suspected some clients were dumb, trying the first IP they found, and giving up when it didn't work. I was working on modifying the golang mdns-reflector project to filter these entries. I had some success, but I haven't finished.

thedougd··on ChatGPT's enterprise success against Copilot fuels OpenAI/Microsoft rivalry
I think you may be confusing Microsoft Copilot with Microsoft365 Copilot? The first doesn’t give you access to Microsoft Copilot Studio but that might also be available with Microsoft Copilot Pro.
thedougd··on Adobe Project Indigo is a new photo app from former Pixel camera engineers
This is the first app I’ve ever downloaded for it to tell me my phone isn’t supported.
thedougd··on New studies offer insight into Lyme disease’s treatment, lingering symptoms
Yes, and they use non-specific testing that will produce a positive result in most people.

There's a massive scam industry around Lyme and it's a shame because it interferes with legitimate suffers' ability to get honest treatment. Or worse, sends those who don't have Lyme down a rabbit hole where their actual condition is never treated.

thedougd··on A 1980s toy robot arm inspired modern robotics
Oh man, I completely forgot I had a robot arm as a kid. I had the "Mobile Armatron" variant:

thedougd··on America underestimates the difficulty of bringing manufacturing back
I would point to the emergence of Milton Friedman’s school of thought that the only thing a company should care for is delivering “shareholder value.”
thedougd··on TikTok Is Harming Children at an Industrial Scale
The kids can easily add back free apps with their Apple ID.
thedougd··on TikTok Is Harming Children at an Industrial Scale
Continuously frustrated to see the YouTube app return to my Apple TV home screen. I can appreciate why Google makes it hard for me to block their apps on their platforms, but why won't Apple allow me to explicitly allow or disallow which apps can be installed on my Apple TV? Why don't screen time limits apply to the Apple TV?

If you ran Oracle you’d appreciate why it wasn’t patched. They do not make it easy.
thedougd··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
I think this is where things went off the rails for him. Commiting back to the same branch that is running CI has too many gotchas in any CI system. You touched on the first issue, the remote branch immediately deviates unexpectedly from the local branch. Care has to be taken not to trigger additional CI runs from that commit.
thedougd··on Ask HN: How did the internet discover my subdomain?
I should have included in my post, this technique only makes sense in the context of private or internal endpoints.
