thecopy··on To save money on insurance, drivers agree to intrusive monitoring technology
This is not an honest comparison.

Cars are inherently dangerous; to the people inside, people outside, and to infrastructure and buildings around them. The faster they go the more dangerous they are. They drive on publically funded infrastructure in a public setting.

thecopy··on To save money on insurance, drivers agree to intrusive monitoring technology
What is the problem? That you cannot break the law without consequence?

Car-drivers have a strong sense of entitlement that i never have seen in other non-radical groups.

thecopy··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model

Why on earth would you think that? Have you never worked with "partners" before?:)
thecopy··on Don’t open the details in a modal window, have it be a separate page
>there is no difference in loading time between a modal and non-modal view

AWS Management Console begs to differ:)

thecopy··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
Is it really extraordinary or unbelievable? Easier access to infrastructure which is quiet and environmentally friendly should reasonably not decrease property values?

I would definitely be more interested in a property with bike infrastructure, although that is just one tiny sample with no control variables:)

>endless bike parade

This would be the first time im hearing about something like this. It sounds like the bike path was very successful.

Do you have more information?

thecopy··on Google Analytics 4 was frustrating, so we built our own analytics service
Indeed. The IAB has, imo, purposely made the “consent” modal as confusing and annoying as possible to train users to just accept. All those different purposes… it is all very confusing even for an engineer like me who’s job it is to work with (due to legal department’s conviction that unless we have such a modal we are breaking the law)
thecopy··on Google Analytics 4 was frustrating, so we built our own analytics service
I think you are mixing that up with the ePrivacy Regulation
thecopy··on Google Analytics 4 was frustrating, so we built our own analytics service
The parent was talking about ePrivacy Directive which is a regulation for companies registered and operating in EU. That is where the cookie banner requirement comes from.

DDG honestly have better results for me. Google usually have worse results when i cannot find what i want on DDG and use the !g command.

thecopy··on Millions snap up new Germany-wide public transit ticket
There are also ticket machines at almost every stop, if you dont have a smartphone. You can pay with cash, card, and i believe with Bitcoin too
thecopy··on ChatGPT has no inner monologue or meta-cognition
As i understand 50% of humans also have no inner monolouge.
thecopy··on Millions snap up new Germany-wide public transit ticket
In Switzerland there are no gates or a need for "showing a card/ticket to an operator, or otherwise proving you have, in fact, purchased a fare".

You just enter the bus/train/tram vehicle. Maybe a ticket controllant comes, maybe not (most often they dont come and check)

EDIT: To get a ticket you simple open the app and "check in". When you leave the transport you open the app and "check out". At the end of the day the system calculated the cheapest ticket for you based on that 24h period. This works across the entire country. From local buses to high speed intercity rail

thecopy··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
And net reduced road maintenance and external costs coming for reduced car usage
thecopy··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
This is true. Road damage scales with the _fourth_ power of axle load.

Pedestrian and bike infra for majority of cases in dense areas is objectively better in all metrics except human laziness and entitlement

thecopy··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
This might be true in USA where society have built itself to be almost fully dependent on cars. As a non-american: I have not owned a car in 10 years. You are not forced to have to own a car by some force of nature.
thecopy··on The US Wants to Close an ‘SUV Loophole’ That Supersized Cars
What would you suggest the US policy makers do instead?
thecopy··on The US Wants to Close an ‘SUV Loophole’ That Supersized Cars
>equal damage to roads.

That's an understatement. Afaik damage to the road scales with weight to the _FOURTH_ power.

thecopy··on Stop whining about “The EU Cookie Policy” and improve your ways
Indeed. I have many times mentioned this with business/product owners in my organization - but it is a nasty mix of complicated laws and regulation, pressure from legal, and a mentality of risk-minimizing. I usually only mention it in passing because fighting the requirement (which often is not actually needed) would take all my time and several weeks/months. I dont really care in the end.
thecopy··on Writer wants to make Portal 3, but Valve's 'flat structure' makes it a challenge
This happened at a place i used to worked at as well, a supposedly "flat company" without hierarchies.

The implicit hidden hierarchies - based partly on charisma and friendship - increased the effort to do anything, and especially the mental stress of having to keep the double-think alive.

I think for less socially adept people these companies are a nightmare. The entire direction of the company was decided by a cliquie implicit power holders with no accountability, as these could always play on the "flat structure and we all share responsibility and accountability"

thecopy··on EU countries approve 2035 phaseout of CO2-emitting cars
"Electrofuel". God.. they are so good at lobbying and PR i have to admire it. Even though it will lead to people dying by toxic exhausts.
thecopy··on New estimate for high-speed rail puts California train $100B in the red
Stagnant public transit use is caused by bad public transit. Hence investments are needed. The USA’s transit is like a 3rd world country’s.
thecopy··on New estimate for high-speed rail puts California train $100B in the red
No infrastructure is self supporting. It is all subsidized which actually is “economically viable” since infrastructure is a productivity multiplier.
