thebigspacefuck··on [dead]
Seems like a biased source, from the Wikipedia page for Washington Times: “The first edition of The Washington Times was published on May 17, 1982. The newspaper was founded by Unification Church leader Sun Myung Moon, and it was owned until 2010 by News World Communications, an international media conglomerate founded by Moon. It is currently owned by Operations Holdings, which is a part of the Unification Church movement.“
thebigspacefuck··on AGI is far from inevitable
On the other hand, airplanes haven’t really improved that much since the 737 was introduced in 1966 and have even gotten worse in some ways (737 Max). We actually don’t know what the AI equivalent of Wright brothers plane is and what the 737 is. Maybe Eliza, 60 years ago, was the Kitty Hawk flight and ChatGPT 4 is the 737.

Would this be useful for identifying packages in a requirements.txt that aren’t used? Or is there another tool for that?

thebigspacefuck··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
I think the issue is that at some point the heroin and gambling leads to desperate situations for the fools, the fools start mugging people and stealing your property, then you feel like a fool for letting them get into that situation when it feels preventable.

thebigspacefuck··on The US fiscal mess: Some unpleasant fiscal simulations
Do you need a growing population if the next generations increase their productivity instead? Then what do you actually need for “social security”? If it’s a house, there will be plenty of those left over when the population declines. Maybe we get to a point where people feel secure without government assistance and the program shrinks.

Dr Dodson has been helping pharma companies push these drugs for a long time:

Full disclosure, he was my doc and diagnosed me with ADHD. I kind of think the whole thing is a scam now in large part due to this.

thebigspacefuck··on Turning psychiatric labels into identities
I have struggled to find a label that accurately describes myself. While diagnosed with ADHD before, I don’t really feel that is accurate. There is a huge difference in diagnosis in the US vs the EU. I currently go with “gifted” or 2e which I understand as high IQ, some amount of ADHD and/or some amount of ASD. However gifted has a couple issues, one being as a label it implies I’m better than, so is less socially acceptable than a “disorder”. It also is currently being done away with in schools because IQ is racist or something. If there was a high IQ disorder, this would be a perfect label as it acknowledges the drawbacks. Neurodivergent is currently where I’m at just to acknowledge I’m different but not the exact reason why.

thebigspacefuck··on Psychedelics could treat some of the worst chronic pain in the world
Makes a ton of sense to me. Dr Sarno was quite aware of the mind body connection and attributed most chronic pain problems to repressed rage. Psychedelics may help with this as effectively as his program.

I’m really not sure why he’s never caught on more

thebigspacefuck··on Bountysource Stole at Least $17,000 from Open Source Developers
Bountysource has been offline for a bit. Does anyone know of an alternative?
thebigspacefuck··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
Nonsense. The only people making revenue are Kelloggs, Kraft etc. Not everything has a self-serving motive. Just look at obesity rates in the US and you know something is terribly wrong with the food we’re eating. If you care about people, heck if you just care about healthcare costs, you should want to figure this out.

For keto, the main thing you need to know is that if you are on high blood pressure or diabetes meds you can have dangerously low blood pressure or blood sugar on keto. Seriously, don’t try it without medical supervision lest you pass out in the bathroom. For anyone not on meds, you may need more salt than you’d otherwise have. Otherwise it’s fairly safe. There’s nothing harmful about ketones. They can help with epilepsy. Maybe your brain runs better on them without epilepsy, so it’s worth a shot to find out. Docs prescribe bipolar people seizure drugs and it works for some reason, so it’s not an unreasonable hypothesis.

thebigspacefuck··on There's No Easy Way to Stop Taking Ozempic
It would be good to compare this to diet and lifestyle change. Does it have the same or better results for less cost? Are the people that had success long term changing their diet and lifestyle and were they capable of changing it without the drug? With any drug the benefit should clearly outweigh the risk, especially if it’s expensive. If the probability is that there is no long term benefit, that should be a factor and if lifestyle change is required for success it should be encouraged.

thebigspacefuck··on She Wanted to Make Her Frank Lloyd Wright House Greener
My understanding of FLW is that his houses are beautiful but impractical to live in. It would be great to see a comeback of his style if the problems with livability could be fixed, though in this case it seems like they couldn’t fix them all.
