thebigshane··on Stop Whining About Google Reader
The author appears to be playing along as if this is not satire, but I am pretty sure it is.

Here is my case for calling it satire:

It starts off with caricatures...

every single one of these people do indeed have Twitter
profiles, and they are entrepreneurs also, and they're
thinking about their next pivot, and they certainly have
an opinion on NodeJS versus Clojure even though they've
never gone past the tutorial on either platform [...]
Stating the obvious

the only thing in between a hacker who misses Reader and a working
  Reader implementation past-June is... nothing
Hyperbole...

Reader's cancellation will have absolutely no impact on RSS.
Reader isn't RSS. It isn't anything but a consumer, one of many,
  of the RSS standard.

whoever is in possession of your RSS feeds probably knows
you more intimately than Target, which supposedly knows
when a woman is pregnant before her father. It's an
  intimate relationship, based on trust.

But I didn't really become convinced it was satire until this line...

Entitlement without effort is like representation without taxation.
So, am I the only one who sees this as satire? A subtle poke at Hacker News for taking itself too seriously? Or am I the guy who mistakenly laughs "Ha! Yea that would be crazy, right?" even though the other guy was totally serious?
thebigshane··on Introducing Netflix Social
The post says that that Facebook Sharing is opt-in:

By default, sharing will only happen on Netflix.
And the rest seems easily disabled as well:

You are in control of what gets shared. You can choose not
to share a specific title by clicking the “Don't Share
This” button in the player. You can also visit your
“Social Settings” in “Your Account” on Netflix.com to turn
on additional sharing to Facebook or stop sharing
  altogether.
thebigshane··on Establishing secure connection
That makes this even sillier... The popup stays open claiming to be authenticating, while the main page has already returned with the error message "Your sign on was unsuccessful. Please try again..."

thebigshane··on Do You Wanna Touch
Fascinating...

10/GUI is a proposed new user interface paradigm. Created
in 2009 by R. Clayton Miller, it combines multi-touch
input with a new windowing manager.

It splits the touch surface away from the screen, so that
user fatigue is reduced and the users' hands don't
obstruct the display.[1] Instead of placing windows all
over the screen, the windowing manager, Con10uum, uses a
linear paradigm, with multi-touch used to navigate between
and arrange the windows.[2] An area at the right side of
the touch screen brings up a global context menu, and a
similar strip at the left side brings up application-
  specific menus.

thebigshane··on An FAQ for the 2012 US Presidential Election
Given raganwald's recent "Tell HN", is it possible to keep the discussion on this thread civil? I would assume it is still impossible to needlessly argue politics here, but please prove me wrong.
thebigshane··on Career Day - A parent introduces programming at her son's school
How does it work for a minor using Facebook? Are their accounts public by default? Can they friend and be friend-requested by anybody? Are they linked to their parent accounts somehow so that parents can monitor or approve requests? When they become an adult, is all of the data/content/history going to stay with the account? So when they are 20, friends can see what they wrote when they were 12 if they dig into their history?

(I am not very familiar with Facebook but I do have two young kids who will probably start wanting it soon)

thebigshane··on Github: Major Service Outage
(Never heard that term before...)

Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) is an open source network
stress testing and denial-of-service attack application
  [...]
LOIC performs a denial-of-service (DoS) attack (or when
used by multiple individuals, a DDoS attack) on a target
site by flooding the server with TCP packets or UDP
packets with the intention of disrupting the service of a
particular host. People have used LOIC to join voluntary
  botnets.

thebigshane··on Ubuntu 12.10 Now Available
I'm not sure if I agree with your finger pointing. Because it doesn't matter whose fault it is. Lack of graphics card drivers, printer drivers, etc were always the fault of the vendors, but users don't care about that. They just don't use Linux because "my printer won't work" or "it's a hassle to setup my printer".

But, again, all of this isn't much of an issue anymore.

(Also Google loves Linux and particularly Ubuntu. I'm not sure why they are dragging their feet on Google Drive but it's not because they don't care)

thebigshane··on Ubuntu 12.10 Now Available
My list so far:

No official Google Drive[0] support (but we do have Dropbox)
  No official Garmin Connect[1] support
All in all, that's not bad. All monitors, ebook readers, mp3 players, cameras, printers, wifi, mice/keyboards have all been perfect out of the box for years (for me).

thebigshane··on Teaching linear algebra
The "spaced repetition" theory is similar to something I read in Wired[0] long ago, of a guy and his note-taking "SuperMemo"[1] app. The article drifts aimlessly about the guy, but the theory behind the app is very interesting. And the chart is excellent[2].

For example, say you're studying Spanish. Your chance of
recalling a given word when you need it declines over
time according to a predictable pattern. SuperMemo tracks
this so-called forgetting curve and reminds you to
rehearse your knowledge when your chance of recalling it
has dropped to, say, 90 percent. When you first learn a
new vocabulary word, your chance of recalling it will
drop quickly. But after SuperMemo reminds you of the
word, the rate of forgetting levels out. The program
tracks this new decline and waits longer to quiz you the
  next time.

thebigshane··on Hacker News supports browsing with a points threshold
I would like to see a solution that addresses this issue too. Perhaps something like http://news.ycombinator.com/classic but instead of users who have been on HN for a year, you pick the users. Some AI programmers might suggest that HN itself could figure out what users typically upvote the same content as you -- no thanks, I can pick them out myself.

A tag/keyword system would be ideal but that's a lot of work and tags never seem to turn out as good as they sound.

(also, `larrys`, you died yesterday -- hellbanned, and looking at your comment history yesterday, seems like an entirely inappropriate response from the mods)

thebigshane··on The Most Revealing Job Interview Question
Sigh. Thanks. This is the second time I've been caught with an eggcorn[0]. First "windshield factor"[1], now "for prosperity sake". Looks like I might have the privilege of adding to their database myself this time...

thebigshane··on The Most Revealing Job Interview Question
Your question could be better phrased:

Why do you think most people prefer to read it "inline"?
Far less snark, don't you think?

My answer would be: because some of my highest voted comments have been snippets copied from a larger work instead of just linking to the larger work. Perhaps people don't want to open up a new tab, perhaps they don't want to load a new page, perhaps they appreciate keeping the content in context with the rest of the comment thread, perhaps they appreciate keeping the content on HN for "prosperity sake" due to the ever-breaking links of the rest of the web.

thebigshane··on Racism at a gaming company
Do we need a "consensus opinion"? Does it need to happen here?

My point is that discussing controversial social issues is generally unproductive. Worth thinking about, but unless PG devotes his next essay to this topic, I don't think anyone is going to be changing their minds here.

For what it's worth I agree with most of your comments on this thread, and the backlash you are getting has really lowered my average opinion of this community. It's disgusting.
