theaustinseven··on Mailhero – a more permanent temporary email
I think the best part about this is that it makes it easy to see who is selling your email. That can bring some accountability to these services that collect your email, and supposedly never use it.
theaustinseven··on CSS Purge
Yes, CSS might be a big problem, but people's obsession with overriding everything with Javascript is a much bigger problem. I think web developers/designers need to move more towards lighter webpages that use HTML for functionality whenever possible, which is something that might seem obvious, but is so rarely done.
theaustinseven··on Recruitment, Resumes, Interviews: How the Hiring Process Favors Elites (2015)
There is also the geographic bias. Only the very large companies can afford to do hiring at schools that are very far away from their headquarters. For example, I go to school in the midwest, and we get Google, Cisco, and a few more big names, but then it drops off really fast.
theaustinseven··on How to Not Be the Engineer Running 3.5GB Docker Images
It might seem like a lot of work to start with, but I find homebrewing my own docker containers saves a lot of space. The containers that people distribute almost always have much more than you would ever need, and for any microservice you shouldn't have that many dependencies.
theaustinseven··on Show HN: CodeGophers, Send an email to get any coding task done in 48 hours
This could be something that could work pretty well, but it makes me think of this xkcd: http://xkcd.com/1425/
theaustinseven··on CAVE Language – a visual design language for contextual applications
The website is down, and no cached versions seem to exist...
theaustinseven··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
I know some people who prefer svn or mercurial over git.
theaustinseven··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
Does GitKraken support git Large File Storage? If so, I could see this becoming an excellent tool for non-programmers who have to use git(designers, game artists, etc.) and don't really want to get involved with some of the complexities that come with git.
theaustinseven··on Ask HN: What should we fund at YC Research?
I would say along the lines of academic publishing, there is also a problem with people publishing misleading or plain wrong press releases. I think there needs to be a better way of evaluating the reliability of research, and a way to possibly improve the peer review process. This may mean that research has to be more open with the data that they collect. I think there is definitely some work to be done here.
theaustinseven··on Show HN: StartupSort, a new job search engine for smart engineers
I used this site, and I have to say, I was impressed. I would have to say that the amount of startup data and jobs they have compiled is unparalleled except by angel.co, but StartupSort has a MUCH better UI that makes it easier to actually find jobs that are of interest and in the right region.
theaustinseven··on Show HN: Create your own 2015 Year in Review
Are there any examples that we can take a look at?
