thearn4··on New York deploys National Guard to New Rochelle, establishes containment center
It's the lack of information and sense that there are no adults in the room among our leadership that is the most frustrating. It worries me more than the virus itself.
thearn4··on Gilbert Strang Teaches Linear Algebra
Related note: Strang's essay on the imbalance in education in favor of Calculus over Linear Algebra is (in my opinion at least) a great read, for those interested in the pedagogy of mathematics.

thearn4··on MWC 2020 canceled over coronavirus health concerns
Interestingly, cities in India seem to be at a lower traffic level than 2019 too. Maybe it's related to other factors?
thearn4··on F-35’s gun that can’t shoot straight adds to its roster of flaws
Yes, ultimately the intention (quite surprisingly) of the USAF is to replace the A-10 series with the F-35.
thearn4··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
> Lots of basic products are being sold to pump up reviews then being switched to a much more expensive item.

This is the most frustrating of them all, reviews mean absolutely nothing anymore when the item can be switched out at will while keeping any old reviews.

thearn4··on Having Kids
Also, some parents do develop those feelings, but over time rather than immediately.
thearn4··on The Cult of Hideo Kojima
I remember Metal Gear Solid having movie-style credits at the beginning and end of the game that feature his name, I wonder if that's the origin?
thearn4··on Meetup.com alternatives
It's been a random mix for me. The non-tech meetups (hiking, board games, etc.) that I've attended were often better experiences on average than tech-related ones, which were often a bit too focused on business interests.
thearn4··on I feel like im talking to the borg
Bots or not, it's not very authentic or honest, and certainly not good PR.
thearn4··on Mathics – A free, light-weight alternative to Mathematica
SymPy Gamma (https://gamma.sympy.org/input/?i=integrate+x%5E2) sort of fits as an alternative, though it's not very good at parsing general questions/expressions.
thearn4··on Dumbass Home 2.0. How modern IoT works, how to automate your rented box today
I tinkered with home automation in the past, and had the same worries. I felt comfortable enough with Z-Wave, but drew the line at anything networked.
thearn4··on Automatic Differentiation in Machine Learning: A Survey (2018) [pdf]
I work on non-linear optimization problems for most of my work projects, and I know exactly what you mean. One of these years we'll be freed from remembering calculus I :)
thearn4··on Amazon Caught Selling Counterfeits of Publisher’s Computer Books–Again
I've noticed that it's all come full-circle for me again too, when it comes to purchasing from Amazon. It seems that I can't even trust the "verified purchase" reviews anymore.
thearn4··on Incrementally migrating over one million lines of code from Python 2 to Python 3
Can confirm, 3.6 is where my office made the leap too.
thearn4··on Some Fundamental Theorems in Mathematics
I came into the link ready to nitpick the choices (for some reason which I really should examine), but it's actually a nice birds-eye-view of the field that is rare to see. I feel like mathematicians, perhaps more than most, tend to stay siloed within our specialized subtopics.
thearn4··on The Google Cemetery – A list of dead Google products and why they died
I'm worried that Google Voice will join this list sometime soon
thearn4··on Microsoft’s purchase of GitHub leaves some scientists uneasy
Great point contrasting Nature with GH, it was the first thing that came to my mind as well.
thearn4··on Many People Taking Antidepressants Discover They Cannot Quit
I had the same issues coming off of Lexapro. Weird brain shocks. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) has been better for me all around, but I worry about what it will be like coming down off of it too. The good news is that I'm overall in a good place and feel like I probably don't need it anymore.
thearn4··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
> Moreover, the human brain won't like processing these freak accidents.

I think this is really key. The ability to put the blame on something tangible, like the mistakes of another person, somehow allows for more closure than if it was a random technical failure.

thearn4··on Making $60k a month from a podcast on software engineering
I listen to Joe pretty often, but to be honest the quality of his interviews is hit-or-miss to me. Sometimes it's really great, sometimes he rambles and goes back over the same topic a few times.
thearn4··on Making $60k a month from a podcast on software engineering
> A daily podcast that lasts an hour? It's remarkable that he can keep up that pace.

I've also been very impressed with Jeff's pace and consistent quality/depth. Joe Rogan is the only other podcaster that I listen to who comes close to that.

thearn4··on Elementary Knightship found in Conway's Game of Life
Sort of a tangent, but I'd be curious to know what sort of recent advances there have been in the study or applications of cellular automata. It's been awhile since I picked up Wolfram's "A new kind of science"
thearn4··on How I Helped Potty-Train My Kid Using Twilio and an AWS IoT Button
Going through it right now, looking forward to the end of it.
thearn4··on Show HN: Convert screenshots of equations to LaTeX
Very cool! I had this exact idea of a service a few years back, but was one of those things I never found the time or motivation to actually do. The results seem very nice.
thearn4··on What's the significance of 0.05 significance? (2013)
The standard ritual for measuring significance in research seems to me to be some strange marriage of the ideas of Fisher, Neyman, and Pearson that I'm not sure any of them would have actually agreed with. I'd be interested to hear any historians of statistics or scientific methodology comment more on that angle or correct my misinterpretation if thats what it is.
thearn4··on In an Era of ‘Smart’ Things, Sometimes Dumb Stuff Is Better
I definitely wouldn't use any kind of technology that doesn't gracefully fall back to working as an uncontrolled "dumb" device. Z-Wave switches are at least pretty good at this, disconnecting my hub turns them back into normal light switches.
thearn4··on Obesity and Overweight Prevalence for the U.S
This definitely concerns me as a dad. I need to keep discipline not just for myself, but to set the right example.
thearn4··on QuickBASIC Lives on with QB64
Same! It came free with my dad's 386 that he bought for work back in 1991 or 1992. He didn't have any interest in it so I read through the manual and tinkered with it.
thearn4··on Would College Students Retain More If Professors Dialed Back the Pace?
I've taught some undergrad courses, and unfortunately in practice this is a bit of an upstream problem. The pace of main line non-remedial courses is often set by the scope of course objectives, which in many cases are tied to accreditation. For higher-level more specialized courses, there is at least more freedom.

Basically, even something that seems like a simple shake-up in education often would require a top-down redesign when considering actual implementation. Higher education is highly conservative and bureaucratic in its processes.

thearn4··on Learn FFmpeg the hard way
This was something I had to find out the hard way in the process of writing this

https://github.com/thearn/webcam-pulse-detector

Without interpolative resampling, it didn't work well for me at all.
