This is interesting. It also reminds me of how much about statistics I forgot since I learned it which makes me kind of sad.
theantidote··on Should Google Go Nuclear? Clean, cheap, nuclear power (no, really)
Here is the treehugger side of me, not the pragmatic side: where do we dispose of the waste? At the end of the day there's still waste created.

Here's some pragmatism: Why spend any money investing in a new short term solution when we could spend the same amount on renewable energy that never runs out such as wind, solar, tidal and for the most part hydrogen? In another few hundred years we will start running low on uranium (edit: Wikipedia says it can be reprocessed and used an estimated thousands of years). I think if we're going to transition from oil and coal we shouldn't just go to a new stop-gap solution. The next energy source needs to be renewable so we never run into the same problem again.

theantidote··on Ask HN: My host has me over a barrel. I've placed myself in a pickle. How to handle?
I agree with most of the above. Move to a more cost effective host, optimize your Apache server, and use page caching in Drupal. I think it's as simple as a checkbox in the settings somewhere, but it's been a few months since I've worked with Drupal.

http://drupal.org/getting-started/6/admin/settings The manual says caching is under the Performance section and it's disabled by default.

theantidote··on Citigroup buys Wachovia
Well there goes my bank. Oh well, at least it didn't fail or anything and my account is always insured by the FDIC, although I'm not sure how one would go about collecting that insurance.
theantidote··on Bad "most popular" algorithm led to United Airline's stock collapsing.
Maybe they did ask and Google didn't respond because they figured any idiot knows about the robot.txt file. Of course they weren't expecting the idiocy of the Tribune's web admin.
theantidote··on Pandora: Giant of Internet Radio Nears Its 'Last Stand'
You aren't being that facetious. My father was a restaurant manager in the 70s and he had to catalogue every record he had, how many times each song was played, and then cut a check to the appropriate record companies to avoid getting sued by them. This wasn't a chain restaurant or anything either, just a small little one. They are really assholes about playing your own music, luckily you are allowed to play internet, terrestrial, and satellite radio for free (they have yet to impose a fee on that I guess) and Pandora counts as internet radio so it makes a great solution for businesses.

Actually now that I think of it, Pandora should offer a business or premium plan. Because businesses have to display the name of the song/artist playing when they play the radio, Pandora should offer a simple, ad-free song title display that businesses can use when playing their songs. There's some revenue! Yay! Stay in existence please!

theantidote··on Vista Blind Taste Test
Great. I can see positive responses that a person may have to a demonstration of Vista by a trained salesperson.

We have no idea how many thousands of people Microsoft had to go through in order to elicit these few positive responses.

I work in IT and Vista is just a major headache. It's fine once you get used to it and turn off all the flashy features, but at that point it's hard to see the difference between it and XP. There are a lot of changes for the sake of change, and many of them hurt usability a lot. For example, the old Network Connections control panel has been changed and hidden multiple mouse-clicks deep for no real reason. What if I want to enable a network adapter? There's no easy way to do it!

Maybe the next version of Windows will bring real changes that make sense, rather than slapping a pretty face on an old OS and changing things around just enough so people don't notice it's the same thing.

theantidote··on How to Write with Style (Kurt Vonnegut)
This is neat, thanks! Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors; I would read his books instead of reading the assigned books back in high school.
theantidote··on The saddest, stupidest sentence I've ever read
The RIAA sees it the same way as Arrington and it's how musicians have always been considered for compensation. Record labels make money off album sales, not musicians. The musicians will really make their money from tours, promotions, and merchandise.
