the_resistence··on Ask HN: Applying for jobs as a service
FWIW, throwaway account, running an agency writing resumes & linkedin profiles, and interview coaching. Now pivoting to serving SMBs and startups with hiring as I am burned out on helping retail...

For some reason, folks (individual job seekers) think they can do it on their own and there is an incredible amount of price sensitivity there. In my own career spanning 25 years and then running this business for 5 years, I remain shocked at how little calculation people do on the ROI of doing it themselves vs. re: hiring a specialist and the doors it could open. I venture at least a 10x return on the latter based on experience.

The only pleasure I have found is working with senior people who understand the value of the service and will pay whatever it takes (~500-1000 USD), to be maximally competitive. It's like the old story, you would not do brain surgery on yourself. I am not saying resumes, etc. are extraordinarily difficult. But most people don't know the best practices, can't write well in English, and don't have the proper time to create. Hence, they fail.

Lastly, it is really hard getting public testimonials even when clients succeed since there is this ridiculous falsehood that everyone carries around. Job seekers must appear to have done it all themselves or the employer will pull offers. Silly but true.

the_resistence··on Ask HN: Thoughts on Email Courses?
I've created a few courses for career development/job seekers and the pushback I get from younger generations is they want video in 5 minute snippets. I was under the impression "one-lesson-a-day" of meaty content; roughly 30 minutes of reading for 1-2 weeks depending on the course, was the better value but...

Early days using it in a more integrated fashion with my MVP, but I love postmark. Outstanding support, great delivery record, fine online teaching materials.

I lost a wife at 37 due to it. No prior symptoms that I am aware of. The cost to the system of a cancer treatment (average life span is 3 years with stage 4) must be enormous not to mention the dear lives ended too early.

Well done response. Kudos.
the_resistence··on Ask HN: What is it like to be old? What advice would you give to younger people?
My advice at mid-50s to younger people is to learn 1. manage your energy for your long term health, 2. enjoy time with the highest quality people you can find (I mean that in terms of good language, hopeful, constructive/collaborative in nature and working on themselves, empathetic to all those around you), and lastly say "yes" to almost everything and enjoy to the max. If my life were a candle, every year it is slowly losing some if its brightness/energy through no fault or effort on my own. I had an unusual situation which aged me faster than I ever wished for-- lost my mid-30s wife to a rare cancer 3 years after diagnosis. A part of me died with her and my heart will never heal. Still I wake up hopeful every day. We are all along for a short ride, enjoy the hell out of it. It could/will disappear in an instant.

20 years ago I used to work for a private investment fund which had an arrangement with a foreign custodian bank. Although the fund closed 2 years later, I still get monthly statements with zero balance even after we begged them to stop sending.

the_resistence··on Ask HN: What knowledge or skills do you hope your kids to have?
Critical thinking skills and extreme appreciation for thinking for themselves.
the_resistence··on Ask HN: What helps you push through?
Step away and do something completely frivolous for a few hours. Usually a pink panther film I have seen countless times or FPS going after zombies. I need to access another part of the brain and "turn off" the area that has been overworked. At least that is how it feels.

the_resistence··on Ask HN: What moment in your life made you abandon a prejudice?
I was brought up to believe homosexuality was a mental disease. I lived in a house (1970s) with a catholic father who was also a trained physician and otherwise extremely dedicated to curing the ills of humanity (weird I know). At university, a young lecturer came and talked openly and sincerely about his struggles trying to deny his sexuality. I had a true epiphany that we are born with a certain orientation which we may deny or be forced to deny but it will always surface some day. I then realized so long as others didn't tell me how to live and love in my hetero life, I shouldn't demand or expect different from others.
the_resistence··on Ask HN: How do you jumpstart your career after stagnating for several years
Somewhat obliquely but consider updating your LinkedIn Profile and adding as much in-house and/or online coursework to it. You never know how/when you will be approached. As a professional resume/LIP editor (now pivoting to targeting services to SMBs and startups), I have seen some great connections made for consulting, new ventures, etc.

the_resistence··on Ask HN: If you could start your career all over again, what would you change?
This was my experience fresh out of college and job seeking in the middle of a decent sized US recession. First boss was a functional alcoholic and psychopath who toyed with people for sport. Also exiting his 2nd marriage and on the way to burn through his 3rd. I stayed too long (6 years), realizing 1/2 way through it was him, not me. It took me another few years to find a "face saving" exit. Horrible time and time wasted. Get out asap whatever the costs.
the_resistence··on Ask HN: What is the worst career advice you ever received?
Your boss/mentor has a plan for you. Trust them.
the_resistence··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
This is so great. We have lost the art and skill of critical thinking and exposure to all ideas because some say free speech is fine so long as you only say things that I agree with. We're regressing intellectually and fast.

the_resistence··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
Regrettably, that is what's lost in all of this. Protesters against other opinions and belief systems strongly defend free speech so long as you are saying what they approve of.
