the_other_guy··on Nassim Taleb on IQ
I like Taleb's philosophy that he unlike most successful people, downplays the role of hard work and rationality for success and attributes most things to what we call luck and chance. Being a wall street trader, short seller, etc... may require this kind of mentality since all rules and conventions are broken every day and having a 160-IQ in this arena will be even more harmful than useful if you use logic and science for every decision. However, I don't really understand his disdain for academia and theoretical knowledge, his philosophy won't get him anywhere where strict and disciplined logic is needed, the kind of logic that actually advanced the civilization not the one he used to make money off his bets from pointless stock charts
the_other_guy··on You don't become a Silicon Valley celebrity by being shy
I don't understand this title. Shy people usually don't want to be celebrities in the first place.
the_other_guy··on Quora pays thousands for posting questions
2018 is too late already, Quora and many others came in a time when making a post viral on Facebook and Twitter was way much easier in late 2000s and early 2010s and almost for free, exploiting Google search engine was also much easier back then. Now the internet is popularity contest business, pay for exposure or see your products die.
the_other_guy··on Quora pays thousands for posting questions
But what if this was his sole vision for Quora in the first place? It doesn't require a genius to know that everybody who worked in the new era of social media (mid to late 2000s) understood that you could create an empire from your users' free labor while doing literally nothing. Quora was built as such, Quora was made so that one website contains questions and answers about everything and exploit search engines and SEO to become one of the most popular websites for a long time.
the_other_guy··on Quora pays thousands for posting questions
Pathetic. You rarely see an authentic answer in Quora these days. It's all self-promotion, direct and indirect advertising, fake wisdom and "life hacks".
the_other_guy··on An Amoeba-Based Computer Found Solutions to 8-City Traveling Salesman Problem
Leonard Adleman did lots of research about that 25 years ago. It's now known as "DNA Computing"
the_other_guy··on Facebook Alternatives
Yeah, I should definitely trust your broken website that can be made in 30 minutes with 24 blocked ad and tracking scripts and promoted on the fakest online community aka ProductHunt. Sounds very legit to me. This is exactly the type of bullshit that shouldn't be promoted on SHOW HN
the_other_guy··on NHS.UK frontend
I can't believe how this made it to the top of the HN homepage.
the_other_guy··on Slack closes account of an Iranian user living in Canada
This. It's funny that the West is blaming Iran 24/7 for terrorism while 3/4 of terrorist attacks are just Sunni against Shia mainly in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and the other 1/4 is Sunni against non-muslims.
the_other_guy··on Google isn’t the company that we should have handed the Web over to
It seems people keep complaining that Google is "evil" but they forgot that until only a couple of decades ago, the business world was ruled by oil, banking and finance ultra selfish assholes who had no shame to bring their own countries and even the world if possible to its knees to make profits.
the_other_guy··on Google isn’t the company that we should have handed the Web over to
Yet I'd choose Google over Facebook, Apple, Microsoft or Amazon every time if I have to. Even though monopoly is always worse than competition, Google has managed to advance the web experience using Chrome/Chromium (e.g. V8, pushing HTTPS, supporting the latest CSS and JS features, GQUIC, WebP)

EDIT: to downvoters, what's your argument here?

the_other_guy··on Stop Learning Frameworks
just another clickbaity blog post with no substance for the sake of self marketing.. I really don't understand why HN of all communities still falls for such baits
the_other_guy··on Show HN: Bubblin – Bandcamp for books
I love your website by the way. If I want to read 1984 on EPUB I will just download it from Guttenberg or something but if I am reading it in browser I will certainly use your service. I really don't know what all that negative feedback is about. Of course, that doesn't mean we should turn into a producthunt-like shilling party with fake positive comments, you guys need to criticize without passing negative feelings to the authors. It's really depressing to work months on something and then when you show it to people they start complaining about things that aren't in your product's scope in the first place.
the_other_guy··on Sandspiel – A falling sand game built in Rust and WebGL
This is the most satisfying thing I've ever seen on HN!
the_other_guy··on Ask HN: Which is the richest IT niche for a 2-3 years project?
How not to start a business: the post
the_other_guy··on Initiative Q – Scam or or Bitcoin Competitor?
the real scam is having 3 upvotes in your post during the first minute
the_other_guy··on Ask HN: What are some hacks of real founders who did things that don't scale?
seriously how do people get away with such things legally? this is total fraud
the_other_guy··on Why I wrote 33 VSCode extensions and how I manage them
great job! Moz :D
the_other_guy··on Identifying QUIC deliverables
Does QUIC provide any advantage for wireless connections over TCP/TLS? Also, does QUIC use DTLS or something that's more customized?
the_other_guy··on Proposal: Go 2 transition
The enum thing was just an example, that wasn't even the main point of my comment
the_other_guy··on AWS CEO Jassy follows Apple in calling for retraction of Chinese spy chip story
It's not fake news unless you hurt me!
the_other_guy··on Rust can be difficult to learn and frustrating, but it's also very exciting
you may want to have a look at Rocket https://rocket.rs/, you won't be disappointed
the_other_guy··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
damn, almost all your comments are advertisements
the_other_guy··on Arguing against using protobuffers
See my other reply below under this comment tree, I also tried flatbuffers and it was extremely inefficient compared to protobuf but I don't have numbers currently for it
the_other_guy··on Arguing against using protobuffers
No way that msgpack can produce more compact messages than protobuf, it is schemaless and stores the element names inside the message. Here is a simple benchmark I have of an array of objects where each {id: int,x: int,y: int, rot: float}. An array of 20 elements with random values of such object would take in JSON 804 bytes, in mpack 538 bytes and in protobuf3 only 304 bytes, of course this changes if you put other values but as you see for this case protobuf is almost 60% of msgpack message size and it's around the same ration even if you make the array length 200 instead of 20.
the_other_guy··on Arguing against using protobuffers
Yet protobuf is probably the most compact, efficient and performant serialization method especially when saving bandwidth is important. I experimented with protofbuf, flatbuffers and messagepack and always found protobuf messages the most compact by a noticeable margin
the_other_guy··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
I didn't mean to belittle they guy at all, but the title "CSS expert" looks ironic to me, just like "SEO expert"
the_other_guy··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
CSS """expert"""
the_other_guy··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
>“This is where the web is going,” commented Chris Coyier, CSS expert

are you kidding me?

the_other_guy··on Why you can have millions of goroutines but only thousands of Java threads
if it's about simplicity, then Javascript and Node are better at concurrency for me when it comes to I/O, Node is very performant too
