thdxr··on Interest Rates: Naturally Negative?
Do you have a source for your money velocity claim? Intuition implies it would be the opposite
thdxr··on LF: Fully Decentralized Fully Replicated Key/Value Store
This is decentralized as in peer-to-peer, not in the same category as memcached
thdxr··on Stop Blaming America’s Poor for Their Poverty
Who exactly is blaming the poor for their poverty?
thdxr··on Show HN: Play rock paper and scissors against a untrained neural network
Hm in my limited testing of not looking at the screen and selecting as randomly as I could I was surprised to find it not end 50/50

Not enough trials or is there something else going on here?

thdxr··on Tell HN: I came up with an interesting way to do decentralized account recovery
The amount staked probably needs to be a % of the target account value to avoid spam.
thdxr··on The CUE Data Constraint Language
We've been using Google's jsonnet with k8s and it's been a life saver. Think it works pretty well so wondering what gapes they're trying to address with Cue
thdxr··on America needs to see Amazon’s tax returns
Through what mechanism can a large net worth individual get a company like Apple to buy things for them? They're not the only shareholder

This is also possible to do today and when it happens the SEC investigates whether a $100M painting for the CEO's office was an appropriate expenditure of other shareholders money. The tax policy doesn't have a bearing on this type of fraud

thdxr··on America needs to see Amazon’s tax returns
Trying to establish a set of rules for what counts as a business expense and what doesn't for the infinite number of changing industries is a futile task. It also creates weird situations like Apple harboring cash outside the USA.

We should get rid of the corporate tax rate and tax money when it comes out of corporations to real people (dividends, buybacks, etc) at a revenue neutral rate. Would make things a lot cleaner

thdxr··on Fast key-value stores: An idea whose time has come and gone
We've been building this way ever since we moved to Elixir which makes distributing state across your application easy. Memory on application servers is severely underutilized
thdxr··on Bitcoin climbs to $10k
The key property of using gold as a store of value besides it being easily divisible, hard to counterfeit, etc is that there's plenty of other people in the world willing to accept it. Popularity isn't an arbitrary property, it's a feature
thdxr··on You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep–and It’s Killing You
These types of articles are everywhere and I wish they'd spend more time explaining how to tell if you're getting enough sleep

I've tried everything I can to measure but I cannot see an improvement between 8 vs 6 hours of sleep. I opt for 8 because these article scare me but I actually feel worse than with 6.

I don't drink coffee or alcohol and I fall asleep within 10 min of going to bed. Is it at all possible that I'm getting what I need with 6 hours?

thdxr··on ArangoDB: Multi-model highly available NoSQL database
Examine any other distributed system that implements pipelining. Allows for multiple pending requests on a connection (simply by having IDs on every request) which makes for efficient use of connections.
thdxr··on Strongest opponents of GM foods know the least but think they know the most
Technically has no bearing whether being opposed to GM foods is the correct stance
thdxr··on ArangoDB: Multi-model highly available NoSQL database
PGBouncer doesn't do anything to magically prevent connections to postgres from being locked and idle for a pending query.

It's just an external connection pooler when your native language driver doesn't have a good one

thdxr··on ArangoDB: Multi-model highly available NoSQL database
This isn't a required design to achieve transactional consistency. See for example how this would be done in Erlang - single connection dispatching to isolated Erlang processes.

Fundamentally just needs isolation to be done at a different layer.

thdxr··on ArangoDB: Multi-model highly available NoSQL database
Postgres' inability to handle multiple concurrent queries on a single connection makes it a pain when using it for multi-tenant services. With all the SAAS companies out there I'm surprised this issue doesn't get brought up more often
thdxr··on Scylla 3.0 announced – Secondary Indexes, Cassandra 3.0 compatibility and more
OLTP traditionally refers to the type of updates you do during normal use of your application. Frequent, small and incremental updates vs large sweeping reads and aggregations (OLAP)

The T does stand for transactional but in this context it is not referring to transactions in the database sense

thdxr··on The Real Cost of the 2008 Financial Crisis
Probably referring to the narrative of rising commodity costs driving revolt. Not a very substantiated view as commodity costs in the area have been worse in the not to distant past
thdxr··on Clayton Christensen: Half of U.S. colleges will be bankrupt in 10 to 15 years
Premise makes sense and I want this to happen but have to keep in mind we are easily swayed by extrapolations that forecast doom. Probably won't be to the extent he predicts
thdxr··on Bullshit jobs and the yoke of managerial feudalism
You shouldn't be getting down voted. People instinctively are interpreting what you're saying as greed.

Money is a good decentralized way to determine where people's preferences truly lie. If you poll everyone we'd all agree teachers should get paid more. But the fact that they don't get paid more means we collectively don't really think they should. Asking people to stake money for their beliefs is a good way to eliminate posturing. No one is truly over or under paid on average

thdxr··on We Don’t Run Cron Jobs (2016)
We schedule jobs on our Elixir cluster. Nice to not need anything on top of what you're already running
thdxr··on How to Design for the Modern Web
Being able to be honest and give good advice is a luxury of having plentiful work options. I wasn't able to truly tell clients what I thought until a few years into my consulting career
thdxr··on Herb: Multi-DC Replication Engine for Uber’s Schemaless Datastore
Or it's just incredibly slow and not always available
thdxr··on Chinese stocks enter bear market as trade war heats up
Trade isn't a zero sum game, both sides get richer. Being able to trade with China means you're able to tap into their labor pool.

Every attempt at import substitution historically has led to stagnant growth.

thdxr··on Elchemy – write type safe Elixir using Elm-like syntax
He's talking about installing a package globally on your system. That's the -g flag
thdxr··on Alternatives to Google Products
There is a difference between privacy by charity and privacy by design
thdxr··on Ask HN: What's the most productive development environment you've used?
Arch Linux, i3, vscode with vim bindings, Firefox with Vimium.

Optimized for not using your mouse. It's not so much about literally saving you time since typing is only small portion of your day, but being able to express yourself with less effort goes a long way in keeping you from feeling mentally drained

thdxr··on Ask HN: Why aren't you using a public cloud?
Dedicated servers are now as easy to manage as cloud vms because good dashboards + management tooling have become cloud agnostic. I use Kubernetes + Rancher to manage a cluster of dedicated servers and it's a fraction of the cost as a public cloud.
thdxr··on Is K8s Too Complicated?
Yes it's too complicated. But I think it's a low level tool that most people will use via an abstraction built on top. We use Rancher which makes using kubernetes a breeze.
thdxr··on Pure Operation-Based Replicated Data Types
This is the exact topic I've been trying to think on for the past month. Excited to dig through it.
