It’s basically pointless. You cannot trade the Ruble. So any discussion about what price it trades at isn’t even academic. It’s pointless.
For most people, they can’t just sell off their homes if they need money, because they still need a place to live, which means they are buying another house at a similar elevated rate.
What that leads to is borrowing money against your house if you want to generate some liquidity out of your house. In addition, most people don’t actually own their homes outright, and have significant mortgages.
A loss of a job, or an unexpected expense, which makes paying back those loans difficult can risk your entire home ownership.
And that’s not even considering a scenario where house prices fall.
Fundamentally, housing is THE most illiquid asset for most Americans. What a lot of Americans have done is traded flexibility today for a potential payoff many years later. At a time with high uncertainty where the flexibility is probably gonna be extremely valuable.
In 2021 (I believe they are changing this now…I don’t know when it will be implemented) USCIS only accepted payment via paper checks.
“Invest in Crypto, by giving us $100 with which we will buy $100 worth of BTC that we own.”
How is that not weird and who would follow a QR code on their TV ago “Invest in crypto” if this was at the top of the page they opened?
Somebody opened a $4.2Bn short position on BTC, and spent $1Bn buying UST, on the theory that them unwinding their $1Bn purchase would cause the backers of UST to sell $1Bn in BTC which would somehow result in massive profits on their $4.2Bn BTC short?
Sure, Twitter will “accept” Dogecoin. But the only reason people have Dogecoin is because they expect its value to rise, and rise dramatically.
So why would anyone pay for whatever they’re paying in Dogecoin, when they expect the value of Dogecoin to increase in the future?
So, for example, if I’m trying to make a transaction for $10. And let’s say the dollar loses 10% value due to inflation in a year, while Dogecoin increases by 20% in a year. If I pay for the transaction in USD, a year later in 2023, that $10 USD would be worth $9 in 2022 USD.
If I pay for it in Dogecoin, however, the $10 worth of Dogecoin would a year later have been worth about $10.80 in 2022 USD.
If you think the value of crypto is going up then it makes absolutely no sense to use crypto for transactions.
But now that kids are connected to each other 100% of the time (being in class in school is also not excuse enough to not be connected) you have to be funny and clever all the time. An off hand comment while distracted by a million other things can lead to havoc in your social and online life.
If you wanted to watch terrorists sever a head you had to at the very least search for it (it was usually more complicated than that). Facebook wouldn’t stuff it in between videos of kittens doing cute stuff while you endlessly scroll your newsfeed.
Sure, your WhatsApp conversations are end to end encrypted. Except if you’re in a group conversation. Or if you have the on by default backup turned on.
Everything you’ve mentioned is highly limited to the US.
Asian countries, for example, have been reducing pressure on kids in terms of schooling and exams over the past decade or so.
And again, Turkey creating great drones does not require them to believe war is good.
This is a pretty straightforward logical fallacy.
They are being fired for (a) essentially explicitly stating they are not gonna do a good job working in the way the company thinks its employees should be working (b) trying to get the company to change through “open letters” through the press.
Both (a) and (b) are reasons for firing on their own. It has nothing to do with differing opinions.
It’s like me telling my team that since the Product Owner did not prioritize the feature I think is critical for us to work on first, I will not really do a good job with working on the features the PO did prioritize.
The company would be foolish to fire me because I said our PO sucks and makes terrible decisions. The company would not be foolish to fire me because I said that because I disagree with the PO I’m gonna do a half hearted job. Especially if the way I communicated this to the company is through a half page advert in the NYTimes.
Turkey marketing its drones as great for war does not mean Turkey is being hypocritical for saying that war isn’t good.
They’ve used a single paper to write a broader article. You can find other papers that justify the other claims that the article makes.
Being a popular article as opposed to an article in a scientific journal means references are not also necessary, although I suspect if you reached out to the author they would provide you with a list of references they used.
Also, the idea that the media used to be better is even more laughable. In fact, popular science media, with all its flaws, is better than its ever been. The reality is popular science is just hard to do.
Vaccinations means that for most people this will be like a multi day bad hangover.
And for those who have pre existing conditions, there are medications that can help prevent them from getting seriously ill.
The vaccines are working great and we have great medication. What we need is to get more people vaccinated and make sure every doctor understands when and how to prescribe the medications we have (especially Paxlovid). The fact that so many people are dying while Paxlovid is sitting on the shelves is a tragedy.
And personally, I think Gnome is absolutely awesome. If Desktop Linux has any hope of succeeding, it needs exactly what Gnome is doing. A stable UI API that developers can develop apps towards.
Gnome devs got so much flak for getting rid of theming/customization (they haven’t gotten rid of it, but they’ve made it much harder by default), but the reality is that it’s what’s made it possible for Gnome to implement real Dark mode so effectively.
I just updated my Ubuntu to 22.04 and absolutely love all that Gnome has brought to the table (sure Ubuntu added accent colors, but Gnome will likely get that within months).
I think the Fedora + Gnome combo is just brilliant and will potentially make the year of Linux on the Desktop actually achievable.
At the sizes we’re talking about, it’s not filtering that is the most effective form of keeping out/in particles. What happens instead is that the particles don’t move in a straight line but have a more random motion, and if the particle in that motion happens to hit a mask fiber, it will almost certainly attach itself to it.
In fact, smaller/lighter particles are even more likely to be blocked by masks because their movmeembt is more random and they are more likely to lodge themselves into mask fibers they may hit.
Surgical and N95 masks make this even more likely because their fibers are electrostatically charged. Cloth masks try and make up for the lack of electrostatic charge with more layers and a better fit.
That’s why if you’re unable to wear an N95 or equivalent mask, the next best recommendation was double masking with a cloth mask and surgical mask, where the surgical mask provided the electrostatic charge, while the cloth mask placed over the surgical mask improved the fit.
If Mozilla was so keen on snaps of their own accord why wouldn’t they be pushing other distros to also pack it up as a snap and/or Flatpak.
Ubuntu’s aggressive approach with snaps would have been bad enough if snaps were the perfect desktop app solution. It’s a lot more frustrating considering snaps are probably the 3rd best new packaging option behind Flatpak sand appimage.
They are good for server installations as well, except Docker/containers are almost always a better solution. Although the auto updating features make it a good solution for potentially creating self hosted services.
They’re just a terrible fit for the desktop. Unsurprising because they were never designed for the desktop.
If crypto is to be legitimized, the government isn’t simply gonna say, too bad, the stuff we think is absolutely necessary to the point we suspended civil liberties for, that stuff we will ignore for you.
Whether you agree with what the govt is doing or not, they aren’t gonna stop doing it because it’s crypto.
That in turn was based on the experience with Amazon, which has raised the prices of Prime, products on its site, and the fees it charges its sellers all while still growing.
Netflix’s valuation was based on the thinking that Netflix was now a necessity for people. But this shows it isn’t.
In fact, the loss of subscribers is an even bigger deal because it suggests Netflix is eminently replaceable.
A lot of people on this thread are saying that people are doubting Snapchat’s numbers because they are old. And that’s definitely part of it.
But, it’s also all the other metrics that don’t add up. The extremely low revenue per user, for example. Even lower than Twitter, for example, which has very high global penetration (therefore most of their users are from places with much lower costs of living than the US and therefore don’t generate as much as revenue), and has users spread across lower value platforms like the web, as opposed to Snapchat’s app only interface.
On a personal level, I know someone whose business placed a bunch of ads in different social media (clothing primarily aimed at college aged women, but with a customer base that ranges from teens to late 20s) and had remarkably low engagement on Snapchat.
And all of this is despite Apple signal boosting Snapchat for several events in a row now.
Their metrics all suggest an inflated user count.
