tgmatt··on Ozempic drug supresses desire to smoke, drink and more?
This perfectly encapsulates my experience. I'm hesitant to ask for this medication because of side effects and because it's got a 2 year limit in my country, so I don't want to go through it all then have to stop and ultimately put it all back on. Shit sucks, bro.
tgmatt··on EU antitrust regulators clear $69B Microsoft, Activision deal
I'm curious as to why you think it's a bad deal for gamers and competition, given the disdain pretty much every gamer with experience has with Activision. Microsoft seems, at least outwardly, to care about their gaming division and their games have a whole lot less predatory microtransactions compared to anything that has come out of Activision in the last x years.
tgmatt··on Dishonesty will ruin remote work for all of us
Do as I say, not as I do... and other similar nonsense.
tgmatt··on An Ominous Heating Event Is Unfolding in the Oceans
No paywall https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wired.com%2Fstory%...
tgmatt··on RePalm
That seems reasonable. I did pick up an old colour screen CompaQ a number of years ago for nostalgia reasons but haven't really fiddled with it much yet. I really should..
tgmatt··on RePalm
Out of interest, and a genuine question, why do you use PDAs when smartphones exist? Surely they do everything the PDAs did but better?
tgmatt··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
As someone else has mentioned, I believe it's a metaphor for Meta as a company. It's probably a little extreme at 5% but he's suggesting they're only working at that efficiency level.
tgmatt··on Apple is quietly replacing noise cancellation because ongoing patent lawsuit
Call me naive, but of all people surely Apple can just... _buy_ the patent troll?
tgmatt··on Show HN: Rocket Drone, a lunar lander type game for the web
This, or at least allow inverted controls. It feels very counter intuitive to me as it stands. Seems like it could be fun though if that's added.
tgmatt··on System Preferences Reimagined on macOS
I switched to Linux a little while ago and haven't used Windows 11 at all, but iirc on 10 you can shift right click to copy the path to the file. Sure it's an extra button press, but the functionality is there.
tgmatt··on We don't show typing status
Anyone remember Google Wave? My friends and I used to have conversations and being able to see live input on multiple threads was so good for speeding up conversations as you'd be able to see what they're all typing at the same time. Shame that got canned.
tgmatt··on Map of Reddit
I thought 'Australia' would be bigger, honestly.
tgmatt··on Mechanical Watch
When I saw this, the first thing I did was Ctrl + F to see if anyone else dropped Marshall's link. I have no desire to do it myself, but it's so satisfying to watch him repair them. His videos are great.
tgmatt··on Inside the longest Atlassian outage
Bitbucket is so slow and unreliable for us we regularly refer to it as Shitbucket. About as useful as a bucket of crap most of the time.
tgmatt··on OpenSearch – open-source search and analytics based on Apache 2.0 Elasticsearch
Totally agree, and that PR seems pointless as AWS OpenSearch has an advanced configuration option that makes OS pretend to be ES for backward compatibility so not really sure what they're achieving with it.

Maybe don't use an overly generous license if you want to open source, but not really...

tgmatt··on Steam Deck reports are here
3080 using nvidia's 510 drivers work just fine here.
tgmatt··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2022)
Is this role strictly US only? UK based here.
tgmatt··on Ask HN: Have you been in a team that did “daily standups” asynchronously?
They have to justify their employment somehow!
tgmatt··on Tell HN: AWS warns us about irregular activity related to Log4shell
I replied above, but the instance ID they sent in the email are their own internal references to your instance, and there appears to be no way of converting that internal ID to one that's useful to you. I'd raise a support case if you don't have a TAM to ask.
tgmatt··on Tell HN: AWS warns us about irregular activity related to Log4shell
We also received that email, but it was also followed up by one of our TAMs. For some inexplicable reason, the instance IDs in the email are their AWS internal IDs and is not visible to us, so it's actually pretty useless. They followed up and gave the actual instance for us to investigate, but we think it's a false positive as there is no Java on that instance.
