That was prob. introduced after the Chicago build.

Slackware 4 ever.

I was a software developer back then, and I don't remember seeing a single Mac. On the other hand, Windows 95 was everywhere.
tfranco··on Why we should all be using Windows 95
Good point. On the other hand, PEBCAK was much worst back then, as people were still trying to understand what a computer was.

That is still why Apple shines today. They have full control on the Hardware's supply chain, and a billionth fewer drivers to support.

I miss BlackOrifice and the free internet access that came with it...

until the power supply fried

Interesting. Re stability, people bitched Windows 95 a lot, but I only encountered serious issues when 98 came out. XP was very stable... but don't get me started on Windows ME.

LibreOffice suffers the same issues as Star Office and others alike, and I think this is a reflection of how people get rewarded by developing open source.

Adding new features gives you a lot of fame. Fixing bugs and improving things does not.

LibreOffice is a nice thing until you get really serious and your day depends on a good office suite.

MS Office is complex, full of bugs... but it has all the things in place that a power user needs. They gave a big though about the things people need. The CTRL+Y after a CTRL+X on excel is a great example of that.

I have a love/hate relationship with MS Office. I would lave to have something better... but we're still far away.

tfranco··on Why we should all be using Windows 95
...if it only could run MS Office...
tfranco··on Why we should all be using Windows 95
Second that. And the fact it can run MS Office.

You can get some versions of Linux that are pretty stable with the right hardware, but the lack of MS Office is a total bummer.

PS: First person to say that one can run MS Office using Wine, will get nailed to a tree.

tfranco··on Maybe it’s time to talk about a new Linux Display Driver Model
Still remember the days where one had to compile the kernel to enable sound in doom. The fact that most hardware is supported today is a blessing.

And agree with the author. X11 has aging issues.

tfranco··on Ask HN: How do you recognize good work and celebrate wins at your company?
Wine, always have wine at the office to celebrate wins.
tfranco··on Why Software Architecture Matters
"It would be far easier to talk about and praise the successes, but I find mistakes an interesting topic nonetheless, mainly because they are very useful in bettering the learning process."
tfranco··on Ask HN: Where are all the Rails jobs?
Aprox. every 5 years, the software industry moves from fat client thin server to thin server fat client (and vice-versa).

In 2008 Rails had a great hype on the fat server era. We're on the fat client now, with JS taking the lead. Give it another 5 years and something else will pop-up.
