It is better to simply make a decision than it is to make none at all, for even in failure there is education, whilst in stagnation there is little besides regret and the illusion of safety

textread··on On Writing Better Error Messages
PostgreSQL documentation has some handy tips on how to write better error messages:

I wonder if it would be possible to incorporate such rules into my code editor's linter.

textread··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
I was finding it difficult to stick to cycling.

Hearing my plight, an avid cyclist friend of mine suggested me to try a trick:-

Get a 3 way folding cycle such as the Brompton. Now, play around with hybrid modes of transport.
My programmer's brain loves building abstractions neatly on top of each other. Folding my cycle and carrying it onto another form of transport brings a smile to my face every time.

The biggest tower of babel I have achieved so far is this:-

A barge carried my car accross a river. I was sitting in the car with my Brompton next to me.

I just read the JEdit.org homepage.

I am really intriuged by this comment over there and also your recommendation:

Would you please point me to a good resource to learn more about JEdit for someone with Emacs/Vim background.

I would love to know more about what you mean by 'archlinux shit the bed'. If you dont remember the exact error code, any text from the error screen, or even vague description is fine.

I believe that spending 15mins on the arch forums or IRC would probably result in somebody helping you out with the right pacman incantation. YMMV, my personal experience.

On a tangent, I would love to hear more about any Debian stable users out there and their experience with the conservative approach to updating. I am particularly fond of this Debian wiki article on DontBreakDebian: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

Max Planck was told by his professor to not go into Physics because "almost everything is already discovered".

Is something similar happening in the software engineering community currently with the advent of ML/AI generative models.

I believe if you use an eyedropper fountain pen, one 20ml ink bottle will last you more than the 3kms that the Ballpoint Pen Refill promises.

After all, most cartridge fountain pens can be easily converted into eyedropper mode.

textread··on Master Emacs in one year

Since Steve Purcell loves new technologies and update his setup
frequently, it may be a little harder to follow him for beginners.

That’s actually great. I’m lucky to stick to his setup because pulling
from his git branch gets me updated with the latest cool things in
  community.

When I say “on the shoulders of giants”, I’m stressing that you need
set your standard higher. I’m NOT saying the master’s setup is “newbie
friendly”. If it happens to be “friendly”, it’s just the coincidence.
I just perused through the tutorial. This is some horrible advice, IMHO.

Also, cargo culting everybody to use the Evil mode for Vim bindings in Emacs is also probably bad advice, unless you are teaching emacs to a vim user.

As a beginner, you are better off starting your emacs config from scratch.

Some of the opinions of the author have been stated as facts:-

...every master uses the package smex to remember keybindings
In my opinion, as of 2023, the best way to learn emacs the right way is through the textbook 'Mastering Emacs' by Mickey Petersen. Trust me, that book is well worth the price tag.

Mickey walks you chapter by chapter, while you build your own emacs configuration as you learn new things.

Once you have worked through that textbook, you will find it a piece of cake to study other people's configurations on github and learn more.

If you are looking for motivation to learn emacs, watch the short 2 minute demo videos on the Youtube Channel @EmacsRocks

textread··on Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas (March 2012)
Idea 1 seems doable in the current wave of AI and LLMs. So, Sam Altman is doing this itself?
textread··on Yes, you should still learn to code
No, you need not. Especially if you own a time machine. Its a matter of perspective, though.

Analogy:-

Because of a tool such as Grammarly, I no longer recommend my kids to bother when they lose marks due to minor grammatical mistakes on a handwritten test.

They better put that 80-20 to practice and learn to recognize aggressively reducing their efforts/tasks/work to 20 wherever possible.

Their English teacher disagrees with me.

Maybe, we do have a horse in this race.

This comment was edited in Grammarly, and it score a 67 out of 100 on readability.
