teucris··on Transparent wood could soon find uses in smartphone screens, insulated windows
Polycarbonate scratches easily. Making a composite means the resin can be more brittle, eg scratch resistant, while having more flex.

Yes, they call out that glass has a lower end-of-life impact, eg glass turns into sand.
teucris··on Adolescent boys struggle with disorganization and distraction
While I agree (mostly) with the sentiment of commenters, it’s easy for a conversation like this to veer into blaming parents for structural issues.

Parents are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Society expects their children to succeed in specific, somewhat arbitrary systems to succeed in life, but each child is their own being with talents, shortcomings, etc.

It’s impossible for a parent to serve both. Parents are making constant trade offs, and if paying to keep their kids on track at school seems to be the best option, then I support that.

teucris··on Roc – A fast, friendly, functional language
I’d say that’s one of a few unique selling points. Some others I noticed:

- side effects are strictly relegated to async effects, eg all I/O calls return a future

- declarative static loading as imports

teucris··on Sam Bankman-Fried Has a Savior Complex–and Maybe You Should Too (2022)
> That’s when SBF told Sequoia about the so-called super-app: “I want FTX to be a place where you can do anything you want with your next dollar. You can buy bitcoin. You can send money in whatever currency to any friend anywhere in the world. You can buy a banana. You can do anything you want with your money from inside FTX.”

> Suddenly, the chat window on Sequoia’s side of the Zoom lights up with partners freaking out.

> “I LOVE THIS FOUNDER,” typed one partner.

> “I am a 10 out of 10,” pinged another.

> “YES!!!” exclaimed a third.

Seriously? This is what gets VCs excited?

teucris··on Show HN: A virtual office for remote work
Is there a good way to try this out without getting the entire team on board? I think this could be very helpful for me but I don’t think I can reasonably expect others to use it. Zoom integration, for instance, would be huge for this.
teucris··on A Few Laws of Getting Rich
Thank you, I had chosen those words carefully for this very reason.
teucris··on A Few Laws of Getting Rich
> You just need the courage to make it a priority.

And money. Living modestly and pursue hobbies is much, much harder to accomplish financially than it seems for most people. I don’t want to make this a conversation about healthcare, but that’s a huge part.

teucris··on A Few Laws of Getting Rich
Ugh. All these articles conflate the idea of “getting rich” with the kind of wealth that most people don’t know what to do with, eg billions of dollars. What about just reaching the point where you never need to work again? Can we talk about how that’s a reasonable goal for people to push for rather than accumulating the net worth of a small country?
teucris··on Gsplat: CUDA accelerated rasterization of gaussians with Python bindings
I hacked in a weighted stochastic method into a WebGPU solution[0] and it worked surprisingly well. Essentially, given each pixel of a splat, pick a pseudo-random number from zero to one and if it’s lower than the alpha value for the pixel, draw over whatever is in the frame buffer at full opacity.

The next step I wanted to try was to super-sample (eg render at double resolution) and linearly down sample. I imagine this would give a slightly noisy result that I think would be pretty visually pleasing.

teucris··on We don't have senior engineers anymore
In my twenty years in the field, I’ve never met a packer. Every engineer I’ve worked with, from college hires onward, is constantly building a map of the world in their head and I see it in their code. The problem is either that they don’t realize what lands exist beyond their map, or they recognize that there have to be edges of their map to be able to be an expert in something.
teucris··on The male loneliness epidemic and how it affects fathers
The article posits that fathers are only valued for their ability to make money, are expected to do only that, and so do not interact with their community in the same way as mothers. While I don’t think it’s as dramatic as the article claims, there’s something to that argument and changing that culture would bring fathers into the community more, giving them more meaningful human interactions.
teucris··on The male loneliness epidemic and how it affects fathers
But that isn’t the only recommendation. The article also recommends a societal shift in how we think about the role of fathers to something far beyond financial caregiving. I think there’s something valuable to that.

Although I will also say that if the goal is to enable fathers to find friends, having access to affordable/free child care would be the most impactful. Many households don’t have that, so childcare is split among working parents and nobody gets very much free time at all.

teucris··on The brain is not an onion with a tiny reptile inside (2020)
Increasing? This has always, and will always be an issue. My approach is to roll with it - rather than banish them altogether, I treat all devices like this as such and no more, holding others to the same standard. This, hopefully shifts the meaning away from the scientific and towards the domain of “quaint sayings.” For instance, I invoke the concept of the “lizard brain” quite commonly as a way of expressing how base instincts can override my better judgement. But I’m careful to never imply there (in the words of the article) “a scala naturae view of evolution in which animals can be arranged linearly from ‘simple’ to the most ‘complex’ organisms.”
teucris··on Show HN: Real-Time 3D Gaussian Splatting in WebGL
Wow. I was literally just working on my own implementation. You beat me to it! Great work!
teucris··on What’s wrong with billable hours
I think the opening sections were necessary to define terms and clarify why an extremely well established system (hourly billing) might not be a good thing. It’s a nuanced argument and requires some verbiage. Maybe it could have been cut down a bit but I think it was important to include.
teucris··on Teaching with AI
> Writing is as much about organizing your thoughts and learning how to build an argument as it is about putting words on the page.

If you cannot organize your thoughts, explain your reasoning, etc. then you’re not going to get very far leveraging an LLM. Sure, it’ll spit out a book report, but unless you can explain — in well-structured writing - what you’re looking for, you’re not going to get what you need for the vast majority of writing assignments.

teucris··on The Pattern Language of Project Xanadu
Great article so far, even if just examined for its prose:

> One feels like the dinner guest who has stumbled into a raging martial argument over unwashed tea towels. You don't dare ask for context.

teucris··on Flipping the model presents a new way to treat sleep apnoea
That’s an astonishingly loud machine - I can barely hear mine. I sometimes lay and try to listen to it, but quickly I find the sound of my breathing makes up the majority of noise in the room.
teucris··on Svelte 5 is going to be radical
That gist I linked definitely doesn’t smell like a fart to me.
teucris··on Svelte 5 is going to be radical
I’m anticipating something that pushes Svelte more into the “language” category Rich has talked about before: https://gist.github.com/Rich-Harris/0f910048478c2a6505d1c321...

Putting perf aside for a moment, I think the way svelte components are defined is a superpower, and more compile-time ergonomics like that could really differentiate Svelte.

teucris··on Our Universe wasn’t empty, even before the Big Bang
The title is terrible and doesn’t refer to the actually interesting key point in the article!

The idea trying to be expressed is actually that the expansion of the universe is releasing energy, making the concept of “empty” space impossible as even the emptiest areas are still emitting energy.

teucris··on OpenWorm – A computational model of C. elegans worm
That we can run a simulation of an organism that looks and acts like the real thing evokes a rare sense of wonder I thought I could never again experience from technology.
teucris··on How to pass a first-round interview
I’d imagine a smaller applicant volume helped a bit there.
teucris··on How to pass a first-round interview
Yep. Hiring is expensive.
teucris··on How to pass a first-round interview
The article calls this out, stating that they define the first round interview as the one after a phone screen/video screen.
teucris··on How to pass a first-round interview
If the question feels unclear to you, that’s an excellent opportunity to ask clarifying questions, e.g. “Sure, but what do you mean by ‘conflict’? Do you mean a disagreement on how to solve a problem, or an interpersonal conflict?”

When I ask a question like this I mean a disagreement, and I’d imagine that’s what most interviewers mean too. So I recommend you continue to search for a situation you can recall in detail.

If the answer is that they’re looking for interpersonal conflict, you should use a situation where you took effort to work past it with the person for the good of the mission/company. Your last story could work if framed that way but it lacks a moment where you found a way to move forward with this person.

teucris··on A Syntax for Self-Tracking (2020)
Some other posters have noted there are apps for broad personal data, but this is a whole other level that I think could be super valuable for those who want to build a scheme as they go. The blocker for me is that it’s not an app - if I’m going to do this kind of logging, it needs to be something I can put on my phone.
teucris··on Messages that can only be understood under the influence of psychedelics
Can we please stop putting things on a 1-dimensional “better/worse” scale? Even more, can we stop assuming that there is a high correlation between “processing power” and this reductive grading system?

It’s clear to me that the brain, the brain on psychedelics, computers, etc are all just systems that are attuned to specific things. These tests do not show a system that is purportedly better than a sober mind using technologies to achieve the same effect - they provide some insight into how the mind, in particular the visual system, works.

teucris··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
That doesn’t mean it’s unreasonable to ask for citations when one could be supplied. E.g. a reference to daily recommended nutrition from other government agencies would have been very useful to this opinionated discussion.
