Except for the fact that Facebook is not providing any connectivity here. It is simply access to the walled garden that is Facebook. It is not internet in any form, not even the subset.
What Facebook is offering is not internet in any form. Their advertisement has made this an argument into subset of internet vs full internet which is not the case here. Arguably getting tied up into the walled garden of Facebook is worse than the prospect of full access to internet at sometime in future.
Probably in developed countries, trying hard might be an option where in poverty means you most likely have cell phone, laptop and roof over your head. But in developing countries like India, where abject poverty its ugly head, the people even are not aware that there are opportunities which could enable them to move up. All they have time and energy to think about is how to get the next piece of meal for their family. This also partly due to social structure which is deliberately designed to keep them that way for the benefit of upper class people.
This might be more a customer acquisition strategy rather than trying to run the store profitably. As another comment pointed out, Amazon must have data regarding literary interests of people around every geographic location. This can be put to use here.
I am sorry if this question comes of as naive. Is the medical cost so high that it can only be covered with an insurance? Would a small amount of savings set aside for this purpose be viable in case somebody loses their medical insurance? Also would you not be able to take your own medical insurance which is independent of the company you work for? I am just trying to understand how the medical system there works. I hope I phrased the question appropriately.
That article is highly one sided and too radical. What would you do after abolishing the IAS? What would it be replaced with? Is that going to end all the evil in India? The diversity and complexity in India is so huge that every policy decision needs to be considered from multiple points of view before implementing. India is now in a position were it has to manage the aspiration of both the new middle and upper middle class who aspire for things which developed countries have and also at the same time cater to the needs of more than half its population who are below poverty lines. People who complain usually would not have a good solution or are probably too far away from the ground reality.
Talk...Talk to your manager, friends, family and other support system. This will give you different view points on how the current situation can be handled. Solicit help. Do not always try to brazen through these issues alone.

From the reviews in Glassdoor, it looks like the employees are not treated well in Avago and Avago's CEO has a very low approval rating. So this not a good thing for employees of Broadcom also.
The perseverance and ingenuity of the Indian government and the NGOs needs to be appreciated. The success of polio eradication programme has been result of decades of work in India and Bill is trying to replicate the model in other parts of the world.
The reason for emphasis on education in India is because for most families getting their children educated and a job is the least risk way to have a better life style. The author seems to conveniently forget that most Indian family cannot afford a computer, let alone one with internet. Even if their parent make it available to their children, that would have cost an arm and leg for them. The risk of not going to college and getting into business is something they cannot afford, because a failure in this case would follow them till death. The author seems to be of the view that others are narrow minded, while he himself is not able to see beyond his situation. Congrats for succeeding without a college degree, but do not go about belittling others (especially his teachers!), for they know the ground realities better. As kamaal said using the money from job to bootstrap is the best way for many youngsters from my generation at least.
Exactly, lot of UI features in GMail, Maps and Google plus are starting to piss of me. The UI used to be nice and comfortable to work with before, but now it is plain horrible. I read somewhere that Marissa Mayer used to control the UI of GMail and Maps(she apparently used to depend on metrics to get things right). Does this have to do something with she leaving?
What would this mean for all the Nokia feature phones ? The latest Asha series was very good and selling pretty well at least in India. How would this figure in MS strategy? Are they going to ditch it? That would be sad, because Nokia still makes phones that can withstand rough use.
On the other side would Nokia start manufacturing Laptop in future. I would really like Nokia design team to come up with a good Windows laptop!

I personally get stuck or end up using the wrong constructs in the wrong places. Like I might use controllers(angular) for more than its intended purpose or in place where something else might be more appropriate. This is why I am afraid of getting into making before I get a fare handle on the basics.
Can you share how long you have been a programmer? Also can you give pointers like books or courses (coursera) for studying formal programming language theory?
May seem like boasting, but could not resist! Indians if they have finished schooling can speak at least two languages - English and their local/native language. Some of them in the south learn Hindi also, so it comes to three languages - most of the colleagues I work with fall under this category. Also Indians are pretty good at picking up new language if the move to another state in the country for work. I for one know five languages Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, English and Kanada.
This exactly, a language spoken by almost less than 10% and then forcing it upon the rest of the people. If a common language is needed why not use English? Trying to to extinguish language?! - Now that is the most comical thing I have heard. As 'srean put it - 'spoken like a true armchair ignoramus'. Why is this even top comment?
An amazing article which resonates well with what is happening to me. I find myself just copy pasting lot of code from stackoverflow(website), leaning to google for every answer and not able to come up with good solution for even moderate tough problems.
Earlier I used to be able to convey my thoughts well in writing at least - now even that has degenerated I think.
Thinking about something deeply is now a chore for me. I get distracted, irritated very easily and this increases mental tension...this is a vicious circle.
I stopped TV for the fear of it dumbing me down. Now I am abusing stackoverflow, google and getting into the same situation. Fear of job security and having to learn just enough to get the job done is not helping either.
I don't think this has nothing to do with nationality. I work in a MNC in India and we have free sodas. I have never seen any one raid the soda at the end of the day. In fact there are lot of sodas left at the end of the day even though they stock only as much required for one day of consumption. Bottom line there are ass holes everywhere, nothing to do with nationality or race.
That was a well written article. The following quote from the article shows the situation in India :
"If 7 Cabinet ministers, 19 Members of parliament, such a lot of IAS officers, many writers, artists, actors, media personalities and so on came from a single college in a vast county like India, it speaks more about the limited circles that monopolise different kinds of capital in the country than about the training they receive in college. "
I don't think that is random sample. All the colleges in Southern state of Tamilnadu come under Anna University and most of the colleges (about 15 - 20) I have had a chance to visit and interact with - they were using Turbo C! Unless the student has good exposure or he/she take it upon to learn, they will not be employable.
Initially caste based quota was chosen because they were discriminated against by the society for a really long time. The profession one would go in was based on the caste they were born into. A barber's son would be barber, a cleaner's son would be cleaner. Here is one example : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devadasi . People from certain caste are still socially backward while other caste have managed to come out. The problem is the reservation system is not reformed based on that. This is a topic of hot contention.
