tesmar2··on Eighteen months of Django
As someone who is thinking about doing a python project, should I learn Django or just go with Flask? Any thoughts on those two?
tesmar2··on Face detection for cats in JavaScript
It did not detect any cats in this picture:

tesmar2··on AppGratis pulled from the App Store. Here’s the full story
As long as you are already on Apple hardware running Apple software
tesmar2··on [dead]
I'd say read the whole Bean series, but only read the lastest in the Ender series. You'll get caught up with Ender and you don't have to wade through most of what many people have described as bad storytelling (friends).
tesmar2··on The Best Entrepreneurs Are Older, Have Less Ego
I'm 27 and so much this. If I could find a 45 year-old wise person who can redirect me to work on something awesome in his area of expertise, that'd be awesome.

Perhaps a new site to connect would-be 45 yr old entrepreneurs with 20-something hot shot programmers?

tesmar2··on What's produced more value: Y Combinator's investments or Hacker News?
Age 21: Get married. Age 22: Have first kid. Age 25: Have second kid/adopt Age 27: Have third kid/adopt. Age 29: Have fourth if you want. Age 47: Start business now that kids are out of house and you have experience.
tesmar2··on Zen Writing Mode
This is excellent. I wonder if they can open source it so I could use it on my sites :)
tesmar2··on Ask HN: Any advice for someone getting out of prison after 18 years?
First off, great job in being involved in this guy's life. He really needs people like you to help him get on his feet and recover.

I'd say introduce him to a recruiter who has a lot of connections and can get something going for him. If that doesn't pan out, perhaps some biz owner here on HN might hire him.

tesmar2··on Securing Ubuntu
It is worth switching, in my opinion, because of all the man-hours put into securing RHEL. The systems aren't THAT different and if you are pretty linux saavy already, I'd guess that you could have an understanding of the differences learned in ~6 weeks.
tesmar2··on What I wish I knew before moving to San Francisco
Marin headlands is one of the most beautiful places to go when you are there. For someone from the east coast, walking along those dramatic cliffs was very exciting. My wife and I imagined we were in Scotland!
tesmar2··on White House raises petition signature threshold to 100K
Ahh...one step closer to direct democracy :)
tesmar2··on California To Hit Startup Founders with Big Retroactive Tax Bills
A lot of the discussion arounds this makes me think that the joke "The Republic of California" is not just true of CA, but for Washington, too. Is the talk of high taxes just limited to those two Western states or is it a bigger trend in other parts of the West Coast?
tesmar2··on Rails has Two Default Stacks
Actually, having used HAML for a while, I got really annoyed with it and switched back to HTML. I like the prime stack + plain old ERB.
tesmar2··on Aaron Swartz commits suicide
Man, it's just really too bad he took his own life. Man. That being said, I would advocate working through the legal system to effect change in this unjust area, not break it.

Do you know of anyone working through the legal system to effect such change?

tesmar2··on Aaron Swartz commits suicide
> Anyone with access to a university network has access to those documents

The JSTOR site says "Libraries and organizations license full-text content for their patrons, and if you are affiliated with one of these institutions, you can access those complete articles."

Their site seems to say anyone with a uni affiliation.

tesmar2··on Aaron Swartz commits suicide
This is terrible news, but, not knowing much about the case, how was it morally right to download a bunch of pay-for documents?
tesmar2··on Ask HN: Can use the #1 supercomputer for any project I want. What should it be?
Erwin Schrodinger would not like a word with you.
tesmar2··on Your Minimum Viable Product is Processing Credit Cards
I hear people keep recommending Stripe, but almost everyone I talk to here in Raleigh, NC says that it is way too expensive. Any thoughts? What is the best alternative that happens to be cheaper?
tesmar2··on Getting Started With Clojure
What do your superiors think about implementing new, small projects in Clojure?

When you say "has a huge amount of useful libraries" but then say that Python is "batteries included", which libraries in Clojure are particularly useful? Which ones did you wish it had?

tesmar2··on Getting Started With Clojure
Thanks for this. I'd hate to start down the road of writing a game in clojure....

I may try the blog/webapp idea with Clojure.

tesmar2··on Getting Started With Clojure
I have been thinking about getting into Clojure, but time is precious. It doesn't seem like there are that many jobs out there, but I could be wrong.

For those of you in the industry, why would I want to use Clojure? What would be a good project to try it on? A Web app? Why is it worth learning it?

tesmar2··on Can filming one second of every day change your life? [video]
Any way in which you can record bits and pieces of your life now will most likely come in very valuable later on when you have children and grandchildren. You don't have to record everything, of course, but having a nice overview of each year with a few pics here and there with stories to tell is very cool.
tesmar2··on Firefox 18
I used firefox up until I ran into a nasty Javascript bug which caused Firebug to conk out, never hitting the breakpoint. I switched to Chrome and the breakpoint was hit every time. I got the overall impression that Firefox's debugging tools weren't as good as Chrome's. Has this changed at all?
tesmar2··on Trello celebrates One Million Users
Great Service. Recently, however, we moved to basecamp because of the calendaring features.
tesmar2··on Pepper the Pigs
Exactly, this feels like a bandaid on a gaping wound. If we are going to spend our energies, it should be for education/legal change....or getting at the hearts/minds of the Indian people. The international Justice mission is a great team of lawyers who fight for such change.

tesmar2··on Pepper the Pigs
I like this idea, at least as a temporary stop-gap. Long term, more needs to be done in terms of teaching the men the value of women. That involves a change of the heart as well as mind.
tesmar2··on An iPhone lover’s confession: I switched to the Nexus 4
I currently have a 3gs. Will the Nexus4 be a big improvement? How was it to move over your music?
tesmar2··on My Father's "Eviscerated" work - Son of J.R.R. Tolkien finally speaks out
Anyone wanting to know the perspective in which JRR Tolkein wrote his fantasy ought to read this PDF:

http://brainstorm-services.com/wcu-2004/fairystories-tolkien...

You should be able to then judge whether or not the movies have done justice to the spirit in which his books were written. Judge for yourself as C. Tolkein may or may not be right.

After reading it, I think the movies get a lot right and a little wrong. It helps to know the mind of the one you are reading.

tesmar2··on All My Life I’ve Been Told I Was Special. It Was A Lie.
His assumption is that the only greatness worth achieving is in the video game world, the kind where some hero goes off to save the world.

My assertion is that the best kind of greatness is the one where a man sacrifices in some way for another, leading to the other's betterment/rescue/etc.

So, in this sense, one could save the world very selfishly and that would be a diminished greatness compared to a son who takes a leave of absence from work to care for his dying father.

tesmar2··on All My Life I’ve Been Told I Was Special. It Was A Lie.
> Except in video games. In video games greatness is inevitable.

The underlying assumption here is incorrect, that is, that greatness involves saving the world in some epic way. I, however, see greatness in one who sacrifices himself for another, no matter how small the task. From the stay-at-home mom who spends most of her time caring for a small child to Captain Kirk's father who sacrificed himself for the whole ship (newest ST movie), there is greatness to be found in all of them, and one is not necessarily greater than the other, for they both involve elevating the other's interests above your own.
