tesmar2··on Casper Sleep S-1
We just bought one from Arizona (https://www.mattresses.net - no affiliation) and it's been fantastic. Sleeps really cool.
tesmar2··on Casper Sleep S-1
We tried the memory-foam-in-a-box mattresses and they were not good (leesa - I suspect Casper is similar.). We just ordered and received a latex mattress from Arizona (https://www.mattresses.net) and it's so much better. I don't work for or have any affiliation with them, I just hope this helps someone else.
tesmar2··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
If you are in QRC, T, N or S. I think the newer buildings are open office plans.
tesmar2··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
Excellent! So you just put this into a cron job and it does incremental backups?
tesmar2··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
Have you used that for backing up a Google Apps/ Gmail account? If so, did you just throw it in a cronjob?
tesmar2··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
How do you backup your email to your home server? Is it just an mbox dump via takeout on a cron schedule? How would you restore it in the case of leaving Google?
tesmar2··on 1Password Leaks Your Data
I poorly worded it :).

I'd rather be inconvenienced if I know my data is safer.

tesmar2··on 1Password Leaks Your Data
Anyone here use Enpass? What is your experience?
tesmar2··on 1Password Leaks Your Data
Security is your thing. I think when it comes to protecting your user's data vs inconveniencing them, you should inconvenience them. This will make us trust you more vs creating a new database format almost 3 years ago which fixes some of the security bugs of the old one and expecting only the experts to figure it out. Please make it the default.
tesmar2··on The F# Path to Relaxation [video]
As someone who is wanting to learn a functional language, it seems to me that F# is a good place to start. I've heard people disparage the lack of HKTs, but some of the other features like Type Providers seem too compelling to pass up.

Given Carmack's view of JS, I am surprised he was so positive. Good for him!
tesmar2··on FCC urged to investigate Verizon’s statements on utility rules
They can if they want to, but it seems that is would stifle startups. I guess that is why Google is insisting that cities NOT have that premise with Google Fiber.
tesmar2··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
It depends on your worldview. As an evangelical Christian, I would say no one can make up for ANY of their sins, small or large. Only God can forgive sins. But thank God He is in the business of graciously doing that.
tesmar2··on Show HN: OneBody Church Directory software I've been hacking on for 7 years
Any chance to change the license to MIT?
tesmar2··on Show HN: OneBody Church Directory software I've been hacking on for 7 years
Have you are thought about making this project MIT licensed?
tesmar2··on Mandela was right: the Foreign Language Effect
He never denounced violence. To be as humane as he was you would have to resort to acts of terrorism that kill lots of people.
tesmar2··on Mandela was right: the Foreign Language Effect
> Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary man

Apartheid should have ended without violence.

Mandela was a radical communist who committed 156 acts of terrorism and never denounced violence. The economy and currency of South Africa crashed under Mandela. Unemployment went up and income went down. Apartheid was a terrible system but more people have been murdered every year since Mandela's presidency than before. There's more but you get the idea.

tesmar2··on Why I'm Betting On Julia
In my experience, most people are turned off by using Javascript on the backend of web-development. Your experience may be different, but I just don't think the analogy made in the original article is a very good one.
tesmar2··on Why I'm Betting On Julia
> but it's poised to do for technical computing what Node.js is doing for web development

I stopped right there. Node.js has only a few great use cases where it shines and in the real world, the vast majority of shops have not switched to using it.

tesmar2··on Requirements for DRM in HTML are confidential
> forced

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

tesmar2··on Amazon's German Workers Strike
Sure it is. If I am taken advantage of, I am not better off for it.

Airvoice has 10/month for 250 minutes
tesmar2··on From Zero to Rabbit in 30 Days
I always thought that just using protocol buffers and ZeroMQ and the speed advantage that buys you over having to go through a broker made it worth just using ZeroMQ.
tesmar2··on Unlocked phones are the way to go
I am thinking of going with the $10 plan with a a Nexus 4. Turn on data when you need it for 6cents/MB. Have you been happy with the call quality, etc?
tesmar2··on Unlocked phones are the way to go
Whenever people talk about pre-paid, I always think Pay-as-you-go. I am currently thinking of switching from a Tmobile family plan to one of the Pay-as-you-go services that are ultra cheap, like $10 for 100 minutes good for 3 months. Use Voip at home. We'll see how it goes.
tesmar2··on Unlocked phones are the way to go
Right. And on the ATT network. And only 6cents per MB. Just flip on your phone's data when you need a map or to check your email in an emergency and you could pay < $15/month. Also they have $10 for 100min for 90 days. So if you get a Voip service at home and make all your long calls there + over wifi on your smartphone, you could even pay less for cell minutes, perhaps only $3/month.

I do not work for them, just checking out the options.

tesmar2··on Unlocked phones are the way to go
Anyone here use pay as you go services like AirVoice?
